The St. Mary‘s Knights Football team had another excellent season (10-0) as they achieved both

Conference and Section Championships. Coach Brent Kucera recaps, ― The seniors will be missed.

The Anderson to Mathiowetz combo was unstoppable and exciting for everybody to watch. Alex

Mages (son of Mike („83) and Amy (Steffl „84)) anchored the line like nobody expected, Tyler Hel-

get (son of Paul („82) Helget and Tonya Wendinger) was a 2 point conversion machine, Mitch

Neid blitzed like the Waterboy, Cody Berkner (son of DeLoy („82) and Annette (Braun „82)) was

always smiling and always had something to say; he only had one bad snap this year, which is very

impressive for a shotgun team.‖ Moving on to State playoffs the Knights experienced their first loss

against Bethlehem Academy ending their season. Seniors receiving awards: Jordan Anderson, son

of Paul and Julie, received All Conference, KNUJ Player of the Year, KNUJ Player of the Week,

Conference Offensive MVP, Offensive MVP team award, Leadership team award and was recently

named to the Minnesota Vikings All-State Football Team; Mitch Neid, son of Dan („81) and Sandy,

received All Conference and the Charlie Hale team award; Sean Mathiowetz, son of Glen and Lana

(Wendinger „81), received All Conference. Juniors receiving awards: Andrew Steffl, son of Dan

(„85) and Lisa, received All Conference and the Most Improved team award, and Nate Lax, son of Randy and Diane,

received Honorable Mention All Conference. Sophomores receiving awards: Lucas Heiderscheidt, son of Terry („86)

and Shelly, was named All Conference, received the KNUJ Player of the Week and Defensive MVP team award; Carter

Krzmarzick, son of Clint („87) and Kelly, received All Conference and Lineman team award; David Surprenant, son

of Scott and Judy, received Honorable Mention All Conference. Rookie of the Year team awards went to Alex Mages

and Brandon Helget, son of Bill („93) and Jenny (Braulick „94).

The cross country team consists of St. Mary‘s, Sleepy Eye Public and New Ulm Cathedral. The girls were led by senior

Kari Schumacher, daughter of Dean („76) and Julie. Kari won her third straight Tomahawk Conference race. She was

also named the Conference‘s Most Valuable Runner for the third straight year. Eighth graders Mary Joyce, daughter of

Dr. Jerry and Kathleen, and Jenny Lax, daughter of Randy and Diane, placed 9th and 10th respectively at the Confer-

ence Meet to earn All Conference Honorable Mention. For the boys, Stephen Joyce, son of Dr. Jerry and Kathleen,

and Nick DeMaris, son of Scott DeMaris and Mary Bougie, both sophomores, earned All Conference Honors by plac-

ing 5th and 6th respectively. Kari missed making it to the State Meet by one place when she finished 17th out of 133 at the

Section Meet. She led our girls to a 12th place finish out of 20 teams. This was a good finish for a team with one senior

and 4 eighth graders, states Coach Scott DeMaris. Kari Schumacher was the team‘s Most Valuable Runner, and she

earned the Leadership Award as well. Mary Joyce was named Most Improved. Stephen Joyce was the boys‘ Most

Valuable Runner. Nick DeMaris was the Most Improved.

The Lady Knights volleyball, under the direction of Coach Nicole Jensen, ended their season with a record of 12-14-1.

Senior Maddy Helget, daughter of Terry and Tammy, received All-Conference. Team Awards: Most Improved—

Rebecca Schmitz, daughter of Tony („82) and Lisa (Mages „84), MVP—Bethany Berkner, daughter of Pat („80) and

Patty (Spaeth „80), and Leadership Award—Maddy Helget. Academic All Conference: Jessica Schmitz, daughter of

and Lori; Rebecca Schmitz, and Tori Anderson, daughter of Paul and Julie. Academic All State—Maddy Helget, and

Dear Alumni & Friends,

The first semester of this school year was

a flurry of activity as it is every year.

There are so many good things happening

at St. Mary‘s that it is impossible to enu-

merate all of them. Undoubtedly at the top

of the list are our dedicated and committed

administrators and staff, our teachers, support staff, mainte-

nance people, cooks, teachers‘ aides, our committed parents

and finally our wonderful students. All of this combined

makes for a joy-filled and inviting school. I believe, when

one keeps Jesus as the center of one‘s life, this is what hap-

pens.

The great value of our school is that it provides the oppor-

tunity to help all to be aware of the presence of Jesus and

the vital role He plays in our lives. This is what we hope our

students carry with them throughout their lives. There is

nothing more important for nothing has an eternal effect in

their lives like Jesus Christ. I ask that you continue to sup-

port all of our efforts to help our young people know Jesus

and love His Holy Church, His instrument of salvation in

the world. Please be generous with the blessings that you

have been given by God. It is in sharing that we become

more like God in our lives and deepen our bonds with Him.

May God bless each of you and may His name be praised

forever.

Terry Treml Memorial Fund By Dean Brinkman (‘81)

This year was another phe-

nomenal year for the TERRY

TREML MEMORIAL. The

team water cooler cart was

purchased and put to use just

in time for the fall football

schedule. This multi-use cart

will be used for more than

football. A very special

THANK YOU goes out to all

donations and especially the

generous donation of $560 from the Class of 1982

(while celebrating their 30 year reunion) in memory

of their two deceased classmates, David Braulick &

Terry Treml.

If you are looking for a tax deductible way to give

to St. Mary's, please consider donating to this won-

derful cause. Remember, ANY size donation is

greatly appreciated and adds up to A LOT each and

every year. We have been truly blessed! Each &

every penny is turned over to the school and they

decide where they can truly use these wonderful

donations. We are so blessed. THANK YOU!

Our 2013 Alumni & Friends Annual Appeal

is on its way to reaching its goal of $50,000!

Thank you to everyone who has sent a gift; as

of 1/9/13 we have received $33,533.78 from

200 donors. Wouldn‘t it be great to hear from

at least 25% of our 3,300 alumni and friends?

The money received from this appeal will be

used to satisfy the budgeted increase of $500

(plus benefits) for school personnel salaries already factored

in for this 2012-2013 school year. Once the money is received

to satisfy this budgeted amount, any extra funds will be given to the

teachers as an additional bonus. Please consider sending your dona-

tion today. Thank you!

We STILL Got Fr. Steffl! The rivalry between the St. Mary‘s Knights and the Cathedral Greyhounds is always an excit-

ing one. During this year‘s football season, SMS was fortunate enough to not only beat CHS during the regular season (30-

14), but eliminate a strong Hounds team during play offs (48-28). The SMS Cheerleaders believe that the Knights‘ ―secret

weapon‖ just may have been Fr. Mark Steffl. Fr. Steffl used to teach at Cathedral, but since his appointment to Sleepy Eye

St. Mary‘s our football team has experienced incredible success…and Fr. Steffl has traded his maroon and gray for green

and gold! St. Mary‘s knows that we are very blessed to have Fr. Steffl! Pictured (l-r): Jessica Schmitz, daughter of Tony („82)
