    Republic of Congo

  • Congo River basin

  • Water resource and Hydropower Potentiality of Congo River

Length: 4,700 Km Second longest river in Africa and fifth longest river in the world

Tributaries: 7 main tributaries with many small rivers

Average water discharge: 41,000 cubic meter/second With a maximum of 75,000 cubic meter/second and a minimum of 23,000 cubic meter/second

  • With its water flow capacity, Congo River is the most powerful river in Africa. And It represents 13% of global hydropower potential.

Opportunities for Congo River and its tributaries to generate hydro-electric power are enormous.

  • Food Potentiality of Congo River Agriculture:

Congo Basin: 4,014,500 square Km With approximately 1,692,800 square Km of Grassland; 331,200 square Km of wetland, 257,600 square Km of cropland; and Zero square Km of arid land

  • Food Potentiality - Fishing

Congo River posses 700 identified fish species In years 60s The Democratic Republic of

Congo (Zaire) was the first producer of fish in Africa but today it is among the last.

  • Some actual indicators With 13% Global hydropower Only 9% of the

population is connected to electricity With over half of Africas water resources

Only 26% of the population has access to safe drinking water

With all its food production potential the majority of the population are insecured
