There are a limited amount of resources available in the world.
In the Eastern Hemisphere, the fight for these resources causes conflict.
Using the maps in your book. Label the countries in the Eastern hemisphere.

Economic Competition
Iran and Iraq have long fought over the oil-rich land located between them.
Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein even invadedKuwait in 1990 to start thePersian Gulf war.
Boundary Disputes
There is limited land available on Earth.The nations of the Eastern Hemisphere are in
constant conflict over the land they have and their rights to more land.
The land that was the Ottoman Empire was taken over by Greece, Austria-Hungary, and Great Britain as they increased their territories.
Russia and St. Petersburg
In 17-18th centuries, Russia conquered land along the Baltic Sea to use as their new capital (St. Petersburg).
Cultural Differences
The different cultures located in the Eastern Hemisphere sometimes come into direct conflict with each other.
Ethnic GroupsEthnic Groups – Iraqis and Iranians have
different histories and speak different languages which leads to conflict between the two groups.
Nationalism – Some ethnic groups want to have a country of their own and attempt to gain independence from their country.
Many Kurds have died fighting for their independence in Turkey, Iran and Iraq.
Strategic Locations
Locations are important for different reasons:TradeTransportationReligious Importance
Trade – US, Great Britain and France set up companies to build and develop oil fields in Asia and North Africa
Transportation – The Suez Canal was built to make Egypt equal to Western nations by giving them more trade opportunities.
They couldn’t pay for it and sold it to Great Britain. This gave them some control over Egypt until 1956.
