FROM TMC
- We used a robust, dynamic shape to achieve a presence and dignity that exceeds the value judgments of the European D segment.
- We designed prestigious, long-lasting styling that is worthy of being the new flagship model of Toyota bland in Europe.
- We strengthened the identity of this model as part of the Yaris-Corolla family.
- We aimed at an advanced sportiness worthy of the Avensis with strong panel surfaces and sharp character lines, along with component finishes that promote a high-tech feeling.

II-1. Exterior Design
1. Aim of Exterior Design
Product Detail 1st Edition (Dec. 27, 2005)
II. EXTERIOR 1. Exterior Design II-1__2/14
FEATURES
- We created a dynamic shape with design elements such as a strong pushed-out portion in the center of the hood that results in a solid feeling, headlamps that exude a mechanical high-tech image, and bumpers that bespeak unified feeling, all tied together with U-shaped character lines.
- We followed the Toyota identity in Europe with the leading edge of hood designed to emphasize the Toyota emblem in the center of the grille.
- We achieved both modernity and high-quality with radiator grilles of the same color as the bodies for all models and with chrome accents around the grilles.
- The front bumper has a consistent design as TOYOTA global core models. With this base design, it emphasizes a high quality image as a top-class model and provides a sporty and dynamic feeling.
- The character lines on the front bumper flow from the hood and extend horizontally to the bottom of the front bumper. These lines divide the center and side parts of the front bumper to create a dynamic front bumper and emphasize the design of the portions that have modified from the current models.

IV. DRIVING PERFORMANCE 1. Engines IV-1__5/14
- By adopting a highly responsive Piezo injector, fuel injection characteristics are optimized, achieving low emissions, low combustion noise, and high output. (2AD-FHV)
- By setting the maximum fuel injection pressure at 180Mpa, the diameter of fuel spray particles is reduced. This enhances combustion efficiency and fuel economy. (2AD-FHV)
- By adopting a low compression ratio and a high boost turbocharger, the volume of intake air and fuel injection is maintained at the point of maximum cylinder pressure, achieving high output. This also reduces pumping loss, and thus enhances fuel economy. (2AD-FHV)
- A high flow, highly responsive linear solenoid EGR valve is adopted to maintain optimum EGR gas even during transition stages. This reduces diesel smoke, combustion noise, and combustion instability.
- By adopting a rotary solenoid diesel throttle, fresh air is quickly regulated. This reduces diesel smoke, combustion noise, and combustion instability.
- A highly efficient VN (Variable Nozzle) turbocharger with an intercooler is adopted to achieve excellent fuel economy and low emissions simultaneously.
- A ceramic glow plug with a higher operating temperature than that of conventional metal glow plugs is adopted to enhance startability, and reduce white smoke. (2AD-FHV)
- A bypass with a switching valve is added to the EGR cooler. By bypassing the EGR cooler when a light load is imposed on the engine, the compressed air temperature is prevented from falling down. This optimizes EGR and contributes to low emissions. (2AD-FHV)
- A large diameter combustion chamber is adopted to reduce HC exhaust emissions by preventing the mutual interference of fuel spray particles and reducing the amount of fuel that adheres to the piston walls. (2AD-FHV)
- An aluminum cylinder block is adopted for the diesel engine for the first time in its class, achieving significant weight reduction.
- The high-rigidity, thin aluminum die-cast cylinder head cover adopts a curved surface to achieve low combustion noise and weight reduction simultaneously.
- The water and oil pumps are built into the aluminum die-cast chain cover, achieving weight reduction.
- Along with adopting an offset piston, the piston skirt’s shape and rigidity are optimized to reduce noise.

- The 2AD-FHV (D-CAT) engine is fitted with a DPNR (Diesel Particulate-NOx Reduction) catalytic converter to reduce NOx, PM, CO, and HC emissions at the same time.
- The advantage of the DPNR catalytic converter is that it reduces PM and NOx, emissions along with HC and CO reduction achievable by conventional oxidation converters.
- The DPNR system utilizes wall-flow construction in which both intake and outlet are alternately shut, necessitating the exhaust gas to pass through tiny pores in the catalyst substrate walls.
DPNR catalytic converter diagram
T2A-DP-004
- An exhaust port injector that supplies fuel to the DPNR catalytic converter is installed. By controlling the fuel addition as well as the engine combustion, it oxidizes and evacuates the NOx accumulated in the catalyst as N2. It also oxidizes and evacuates the accumulated PM as CO2.
