Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever!
Dear Friends,
Reading today’s Gospel about the Good Samaritan reminds me of Dostoevski’s famous
novel, “The Brothers Karamazov.” In there, we learn about an old woman who begins
to doubt the very existence of God and the afterlife.
Not wanting to keep these pestering doubts to herself, she approaches the venerable
elder Fr. Zosima to speak about these problems. The holy monk tells her, “There’s no
way to prove these things, but you can become sure of them.” She cries, “How?” “Love
your neighbor from the heart,” Fr. Zosima tells her. “The more you love, the surer you
will become about God’s existence and life after death. The more you love, the stronger
your faith will grow and the weaker your doubts will become. This is sure.” This has
been tried. This works.”
What are your thoughts on Fr. Zosima’s advice?
What is the effect on my relationship with God when I venture outside of my bubble to
become the Good Samaritan to somebody I meet?
From this, what do I gain by staying in my bubble and not being the Good Samaritan?
Now, think of whatever that gain might be and then compare it to the greater gain you
would acquire from God by going outside of your bubble. The two cannot be
compared. In the first case, I believe the only thing gained is more security and comfort,
whereas if you go the extra mile and allow yourself to be taken away by God’s
providence in order to help someone else, you will not only feel great, but you will
make a lasting friend, you will save another’s life, you will edify those who see you,
you will please God, you will also have a rich experience of a deepened spiritual life
that produces a degree of fulfillment that nothing else can. Are my eyes opened to see
the Good Samaritan moments which God will send me this week?
Sincerely in Christ,
Jason (priest and sinner)

In order to keep our cemetery
beautiful, we will need to make a few
rate adjustments. Effective Jan. 1st, as per our recent PAC meeting, price increases are
as follows: Parishioner rate will increase from $500 to $1,000. Non-parishioner rate
will increase from $800 to $1,500. This is still below the rate of almost every area
cemetery. Grave opening/closing rates will increase from $1,350 to $1,500. Also, at
the time of opening/closing, there will be an option to contribute 10% of the opening
cost toward a perpetual care fund. As a church operated cemetery, we are not legally
bound to have a “Perpetual Care Fund” for our cemetery, but starting such a fund will
only help us in covering our expenses. Between now and Dec. 31st cemetery plots are
still available at the current rate. Concerns? Call Fr. Jason at office.
☛ Your parish provided a foundation to you in life, providing for your spiritual and
moral growth. Please remember our parish in your Last Will & Testament. The wording
to do this is as follows: “I give and bequeath to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic
Church, Carnegie, __% of the residue of my estate [or: the sum of $____].” You can
direct your bequest in any way you wish: it can go towards iconography in the church
interior, a chandelier for our church, toward missionary activity so that we spread the
faith, toward a Catholic educational fund for young women or young men in the parish,
toward church gardening expenses, toward the upkeep of our beautiful cemetery, your
funds can be designated in any way you wish.
“WE KNEW NOT WHETHER WE WERE IN HEAVEN OR ON EARTH”
Perhaps the most visible and remarkable hallmark of Byzantine Churches is
iconography. Icons are an important element of our spiritual and liturgical life, both at
home and in church. In a properly appointed church, the faithful pray surrounded by
images of Christ, angels, and saints, which represents a remarkable theological truth:
when we celebrate the Divine Liturgy we truly are in the presence of Christ and
surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. The icons remind the faithful of—make us
more conscious of—the invisible presence of the whole company of heaven at the
Divine Liturgy.
“[Icons] offer to the eyes of the faithful a vision of the marvels God has accomplished
on earth, in a special way through the work of the incarnate Word, but also through the
saints and the Church. It is precisely for this reason that they are deemed of great
importance in the liturgical life. One of the salient characteristics of the liturgy, in fact,
is to celebrate, remember and render present the various moments in which our
salvation is mystically realized. Representing the history of these events through
images can thus greatly help to evoke and fix them in the heart and mind of those who
contemplate them.”[1]
Icons, while beautiful, are not merely decorative. Iconography is important not only to
the expression of our faith but also to the health and growth of our faith. Theologically
correct icons communicate spiritual and theological truths, and are a sort of visual
guide to Christian faith. For those who have eyes to see, icons teach us about the life,
death, and resurrection of Christ, and about the lives of many Christians who have gone
before us—about all the marvelous works of salvation history. [More to follow in next
week’s bulletin…]

Sunday Gospel According to St. Luke 10:25-37 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I
do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you
read?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor
as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will
live.”
29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus
replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers,
who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance
a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other
side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the
other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he
saw him, he had compassion, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on
oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care
of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii[a] and gave them to the innkeeper,
saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come
back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell
among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed mercy on him.” And Jesus said
to him, “Go and do likewise.”
