Confession: God’s Mercy & Grace in Abundance! The Origin and Importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation OLD COVENANT (TESTAMENT) FORGIVENESS OF SINS: God offers His people forgiveness in the Old and New Testaments. Our God is a God of Mercy and Love! God, in His mercy, allows consequences for sin, because the consequences inspire repentance and call us back to Him. God communicates His covenant to Moses, who relays it to the 12 tribes of Israel in the Book of Exodus. God forgives the sins of His chosen people, the Jews, through the ministry of the priesthood. As per the Old Covenant law, to show repentance and obtain forgiveness for sins, God required confession of the sin to a priest and animal sacrifices to atone for their sins. God promises mercy in the Old Testament and keeps His promise. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW COVENANT (TESTAMENT) FORGIVENESS OF SINS: As part of the New Covenant, Jesus establishes a Church, the Catholic Church, and Sacraments to confer His grace. Jesus makes clear that the Father has sent him and that He has the power to forgive sins. (Mark 2:5- 12 – Jesus forgives and heals the paralytic) He then passes on this power to His Apostles, His ministers (priests/bishops), when He appears to them after His resurrection. Matthew 5:17 à Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.” Leviticus describes what the Israelites were to do to atone for sins…Leviticus 5:5-6 à “when someone is guilty in regard to any of these matters, that person shall confess the wrong committed, and make reparation to the LORD for the wrong committed: a female animal from the flock, a ewe lamb or a she-goat, as a purification offering. Thus the priest shall make atonement on the individual’s behalf for the wrong.” God’s Covenant with the 12 tribes of Israel… Exodus 24:4-8 à Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and, rising early in the morning, he built at the foot of the mountain an altar and twelve sacred stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. Then, having sent young men of the Israelites to offer burnt offerings and sacrifice young bulls as communion offerings to the LORD, Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls; the other half he splashed on the altar. Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people, who answered, “All that the LORD has said, we will hear and do.” Then he took the blood and splashed it on the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant** which the LORD has made with you according to all these words.” (**Parallel to Jesus’ words at the Last Supper) Isaiah 43:25 à It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. © 2018 FreeTruth.ca
