The Society pro- tects the interests of physicists by encouraging high standards, ensuring that per- ceived needs are filled whilst avoiding proliferation and needless dissipation of effort. The two main instruments through which the EPS achieves its aims are Approval and Sponsorship of events. For many physicists such recognition is a key (even essential) criterion for them to receive authorisation and funding to attend. SPONSORSHIP Meetings not organised by the EPS or one of its scientific subdivisions, but which are held in a country whose national society is a member of the EPS, may be eligible for sponsorship. "Sponsored by the EPS" indicates that, following an examination of the arrange- ments for a meeting, the EPS Conference Committee has formally agreed to award this distinction. The award has no financial implications — the EPS is not able to give grants or guarantees. It declares that the EPS has been satisfied on the following points: 1. The meeting fulfils a clear need and, if a conference, deals with new and impor- tant advances made since the previous conference on the same topic. 2. The invited speakers and the papers accepted for discussion are of high calibre, and some form of refereeing procedure for submitted papers has been institu- ted. 3. The scientific programme is determined by an International Advisory Com- mittee in which at least 60% of the members are from countries outside the hosting country. A local committee may take care of detailed arrangements including refereeing. 4. It is planned to attract international participation and at least one half of the invited speakers are from countries other than the host country. 5. Nobody wishing to attend will be prevented from doing so because of nationa- lity, race or religion. The organisers are required to assure themselves that free- dom of entry will be accorded by the civil authorities. 6. The registration fee demanded and the price of accommodation in the region where the meeting will be held are reasonable. A lower registration fee for EPS Individual Ordinary Members is strongly encouraged and also substantial reduc- tions for students. Application for sponsorship or approval should be made to the EPS Secretariat at least nine months before the date of the meeting in order that the full benefit of EPS support can be gained. Late applications will be considered only in special circumstances. APPROVAL Approved meetings are those organised by or through an EPS Division, Section or Inter-Divisional Group. The majority form part of a regular series, but this is not a requirement. Approved meetings satisfy all the crite- ria applicable to sponsored meetings and, in addition, conform to the norms laid down for such meetings by the EPS Action Committee on Conferences. They are distinguished by the word "Europhysics" appearing in the title and if abstracts are prepared these are published in the Europhysics Confe- rence Abstracts series. The organisers are required to charge a registration fee to participants who are not Individual Ordinary Members of the European Physical Society that is higher than the IOMfee by a sum roughly equal to the annual EPS membership fee. Substan- tial reductions for students should also be made. One particular type of conference has been singled out for special considera- tion. This is the Europhysics Study Conference which is a meeting that lasts over a few days and is held in a secluded place to encourage total com- mitment. The programme is specifically designed to stimulate discussion. At- tendance is limited to about 70 parti- cipants maximum, mainly invited, of whom not more than one third may be from a single country and not more than half from any two. Normally no proceed- ings are published. For a meeting to be Approved, applica- tion must be made on the appropriate form to the EPS Secretariat. 143

In 1990 Europhysics News plans to publish two Meetings Issues: in March and late autumn. Urgent up-datings will also be included in the June Directory Issue in the form of advertisements charged at Sw.Fr. 100.- per insertion.

The events listed here are those for which details were received at the EPS Secretariat before the end of September 1989. In general, all events interesting European physicists which take place after the beginning of 1990 are cited. For events prior to that date readers are referred to the March 1989 issue.

The listings are in date order divided into two categories — Conferences and

Schools although the distinction between these two categories is not always evident. Europhysics Conferences, i.e. meetings organized by EPS, its Divisions and Sections, are printed in bold type and boxed. Events sponsored by EPS are printed in bold type; Europhysics Study Conferences have an E preceding the date.

For inclusion in the March 1990 issue, organizers should send details to the EPS Secretariat by 21 February at the latest. Even if full details are not yet available, the preliminary information should be given.

Application for sponsorship should be made to the EPS Secretariat in Geneva as early as possible.

INDUSTRIAL WORKSHOPSArrangements for two Europhysics Industrial Workshops have recently been

hardened. These workshops, it will be recalled, were initiated by ACAPPI with the industrial Associate Members of EPS very much in mind and even if they are not formally restricted to this important section of our membership, it is the staff of the AMs who will have priority when (as is probable) places are over-subscribed. Not that all participants are industrial. A main objective is to bring university people together with industry to accelerate the transfer of knowledge at that crucial transition stage from academic research to applications. Attendance is strictly limited in number so that a real brainstorming can take place.

EIW-5 Designing with Structural CeramicsThis workshop, to be held at Petten in the Netherlands from 3-6 April 1990, will

concentrate particularly on the processing and applications technology of ceramics and ceramic components. Over the past decade, much progress has been made in ceramics technology with attention being largely focussed on the development of new materials and advanced characterization techniques. It is now opportune to look closer at the application of these materials and the lessons to be drawn from studying damage mechanisms and modelling. The Organizing Committee is comprised of M.H. Van de Voorde of the European Communities' Joint Research Centre at Petten, H.J. Veringa of ECN, Petten and the Executive Secretary of EPS to whom expressions of interest should be addressed. Further details are given on page 144.

EIW-6 Science and Applications of Conjugated PolymersThis workshop will take place at the Hotel Ullensvang located on the famous

Hardangerfjord at Lofthus near Bergen in Norway from 28-31 May 1990. The aim is to review the potential for the wide-spread use of conducting polymers in future technologies. The physics background to this is dealt with in the article by W.R. Salaneck, one of the Conference Co-Chairmen, starting on page 139. His fellow Co- Chairman is D.T.
