Again,thosestatisticsareallfortheso-called“traditional”titles.Buttechnologieshavechangedandnowwehaveothersegments,whicharenotincludedinthesewell-publi-cizedstatistics.Wecallthemthe“non-traditional”titlesandphotobooks,thelatterbeingmostlyhardcoverbound.
Changing TimesIn1979,membersofLBIattendedaconventionattheSheratoninScottsdale,Arizona.Inthediscussions,somemembersexpressedconcernoverthesteadilydeclininglibrarybindingmarkets.Duringthismeeting,anactivememberofBMI,asupplier’sV.P.andIspokeupaboutthegreatopportunitiesahead.We,ofcourse,werereferringtoprintingondemand.Publishers Weekly’seditorsgotwindofthesetrendsanddiscussionsandJuly3,1981,featuredaone-pagearticletitled,“RebsamenSeesShorterRunsLeadingtoBooks-On-DemandSurge.”Justaboutthattime,IpurchasedmyveryfirstApplecomputerthathad48kofmemory.Forourindustry,itwassimplyamatteroftimeforthetechnologiestobedevelopedtosupportthecreationofthosenewmarkets.Morethanadecadelater,inlate1991,XeroxintroducedtheDocuTechT135,ad-vertisedas“aprintingproductionunitforpublishers.”Thisnewdevelopmentopenedupnewopportunities.WhileconsultingforamajortextbookpublisherinNewYorkCityusingaDocuTechunit,weinvestigatedmanynewprint-ingandbindingendeavors.However,aftersometimeandtesting,wedidgiveuponit.Argumentsagainstitincluded135pagesaminuteandpapersbeingcrossgrainatatrimsizeof5½x8½inches.Nevertheless,thoseconsult-ingassignmentscontinuedwithXerox.Severalsuppliers,membersofLBI,joinedusintheseendeavors.Xerox’sdreamwastohaveaprintedandboundhardcoverbindingcomingoutattheotherend!Well,thoseweretheengi-
IrecentlywatchedanepisodeofShark Tank,theshowwhereentrepreneurspresenttheirinventionstoagroupofpotentialinvestorsinthehopesofgettingoneofthemto“buyin”totheirbusiness.KevinO’Leary,aninvestoralsoknownasMr.Wonderful,hasauniquepersonalityandisalwayseagertoseektherightinvestmentsand“makemoney.”Onthisparticularepisode,oneofhisbestinvest-mentswasspotlighted.Guesswhatitwas.Yes,printing,bindinganddistribution!HisinvestmentinGroovePhotoBookandtheyoungcouplewhostarteditturnedintoa$14.5millionsaletoShutterfly.Thoseprintedandboundphotobookswereacleveridea.Personally,Ilovedthevideossegmentsoftheirbinderyinoperation.Itwasonegreatexampledemonstratingthatprintingandbindingendeavorsareanythingbutdead.
Let’sfaceit—beingactiveinthegraphicartsmeansswal-lowingalotofnegativecommentsofan“outdated”tech-nologybeingreplacedbytheelectronicmedia.TheypointtotheKindlebooksandothertechnology,nottomentiontheenvironmentalistswhoseedigitalasawayto“savetrees.”Thesenegativecommentsaboutprintingandbind-ingendeavorshavehadanimpact.Veryfewstudentsareinterestedinstudyingprintmediatechnologies.Ifyoulookforananswertosuchquestionsabouttheprintingbusi-ness,justtellthemtolookaroundatthelocalsupermar-kets.But,whataboutprintingandbindingbooks?Allweseeandhearaboutisdatashowingdownwardtrends.Wemustaskourselveswherethesefiguresarecomingfrom.Unfortunately,inthesepublishedstatistics,onlytraditionaltitlesandtextbooksarebeingaccountedfor.Inthisregard,theBookIndustryStudyGroupisdoinganexcellentjobthatisverymuchappreciatedbytheentireindustry.Forexample,lookatthemasspaperbacksegmentsandno-ticetherathersteepdownwardtrends.Wellyes,thosearethebooksbeingreplacedbyelectronicreadingdevices.

POD Started with the 1994 Des Moines Printing and Binding SymposiumThosejointconsultingassignmentresultedinanunusualcooperation.TofulfillthedreamsofXerox,LBS,incoop-erationwiththeFlesherCorporation,builtsomedesk-tophardcoverbindingequipment,usingpressuresensitivecoveringmaterialsandendpapers.TointroducePODtechnologiestothepublic,theLBSBookbindingCompo-nentdivisionandtheXeroxCorporationinvitedthetradetocometoDesMoines,Iowatodiscussallviableoptions.Over200binders,printersandpublishersattendedthisevent.Overadozensuppliersofferedtheirmaterialsand
machinery,somewithlivedemos.TheXeroxDocuTechprintedbooks,whichthenwerehardcoverboundonFleshersDesk-topbindingsystem,werethe“hit”oftheconvention.Thesymposiumalsofeaturedmanyinterestingpaneldiscussionsonallaspectsofprintingandbindingondemand.However,inmypersonalopinion,usingpressuresensitivematerials,theseendeavorsforbindingarenotmyfavorites.Theseratherexpensivematerialsarestickyandproblematicwhenremovingthebackingand,frankly,Ialwayspreferredusingalibrarybindingfacility.Itsimplymademoresense.Theyhavetheexpertise,machineryandknow-howtobindonebookatatime.Inaddition,IalwaysarguedthataparticularlocationtoproducethosePODbooksnolongermattered,aswehavetheworld’smostsophisticateddistributionsystems.Overnightdeliver-iesifyouwish!Problemwas,nolibrarybinderyevergotinvolvedwithprinting.TheDocuTechandmanyothers,mostuniquedigitalprintingsystems,startedarevolutionandchangedallthat.
In2004,BridgeportNationalBindery,incooperationwithXerox,purchasedaDocuTechandstartedtoexperimentwithprintingandbinding.Thesedays,thisexcitingfacil-ity,afterseveralexpansions,has12digitalprintingunitsinoperation.Somearesheet-fed,includecolorprintingforbookjackets,webprintingfortextandotherfeaturesTheyhavecomealongwayandsetanexampleofhowtochangeourindustryandprovidenewservicesintheareaof“One-Book-at-a-Time.”

Computersandsimple-to-usesoftwaremakeitsoeasytocombinetextandimages,andwithit,createbooks,theso-called“non-traditional”titles,whicharenotincludedinanyofthecurrentstatistics.Thosearetitlesestimatedtobeapproximately4million.Needonly10ofaparticulartitleprintedandbound?Noproblemanymore!Bestis,asPaulParisiofAcmeoncestated,“Manyatime,weprintandbindjustafew.Thentheycomebackformore,requestingbooksbythethousands.”
