Conference Report

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON POLY- MERS IN CONCRETE NORTH AMERICAN WORKSHOP, SEPTEMBER 1991, SAN FRANCISCO, USA

The First North American Workshop on Poly- mers in Concrete was held at San Fransisco USA in September 1991. The workshop was organised by the International Congress on Polymers in Concrete (ICPIC) and sponsored by the Ameri- can Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Czechoslova- kian Academy of Science, Japan Concrete Insti- tute, International Association of Concrete Repair Specialists and The International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures (RILEM). The workshop was attended by 250 people from various parts of the world.

The themes of the workshop were:

Structural design Overlays-bridge decks and floors Repairs Precast products Special applications New developments

21 papers were presented on these themes and this was followed by general discussions on parti- cular themes, all organized in parallel sessions. These were summed up by the respective session chairmen. Major stress in the workshop was given to repair materials and and repair techniques. Repair materials are mostly polymer concrete or polymer modified concrete. Repair materials and repair techniques are selected after careful analyses of the damage and the atmosphere to which the concrete will be exposed. A typical example of the steps involved in repairs is as follows:

--Clean the damage surface by high speed water jet.

--Dry it gently by blowing hot air. --Impregnate it with polymer to fill up the inner

cracks and bind up the loose material.

--Level the surface by similar polymer-based material to provide good adhesion between the old and new concrete surfaces.

--Place a very thin layer of fibers over it. --Finally put a corrosion resistant layer of

polymer concrete.

This procedure has been tested at many places and gives satisfactory results. Latex Modified con- crete (LMC) and Polymer Concrete (PC) for over- lays, for bridge decks and for floors were highlighted.

Two case histories were cited where styrene- butadiene LMC was used -- Routes 1 & 9 in New Jersey and the departure ramp at O'Hare Airport in Chicago, Illinois. Routes 1 & 9 which involved rehabilitation of Pulaski Skyway was made in 1979-80. After 11 years of placement it is still in very sound condition. The placement at O'Hare Airport in Chicago involved new construction, an expansion of the departure ramp which was made in 1987.

Besides styrene-butadiene other polymer binders like methyl-methacrylate have also been used. Methods of applications such as multiple overlays, slurry overlays and premixed overlays were described. Polymer type and the aggregates used were presented.

In testing durability properties, special interest was shown on the skid resistance. New polymer concrete overlays have a bald tyre (ASTM E 524) skid number of 50-60. It is anticipated that the acceptable numbers will be maintained through- out the life of the overlays.

Examples of floor damage were shown and the criteria for selection of polymer repair material were put forward. These cover the following points:

--Possibility of filling with silica sand. --Necessity of impregnation. --Risk of explosion. --Solvent odour. --Setting time. --Resistance to steam jet cleaning. --Build up of electrostatic charges.

--Impact resistance. --Non-skid property and reliability in use. --Price.

Some very special polymer concretes with high molecular weight methacrylates (HMWM) have been used for making chemical resistant floors with condensed silica fume addition. HMWM resins are best suited for bonding cracks in bridge decks by gravity feed. HMWM concretes are rela- tively rigid but have good characteristics and pro- vide excellent bond to both concrete and steel. They have been successfully used for repair and leveling of deteriorated bridge bearings and other areas with difficult access.

It was shown that the incorporation of latex currently increases raw material costs by about 100 dollars per cubic yard compared to a similar unmodified concrete. But compared to the other systems used for similar applications, LMC is very competitive. The repair time is short which decreases the traffic nuisance generally caused by long time repairs. Besides, the service life is con- siderably increased which will save a lot of money as frequent repairs will not be necessary.

Precast products are now made with polymer concrete - products such as machine bases, machine tools, utility components, electric insula- tors, garden furniture and street lamps. Produc-

tion of polymer concrete, casting and curing of precast products were highlighted.

One very new application of polymer concrete is for incapsulation of waste from nuclear power plant. Experiences of the tests in this field were presented. It is a very important and promising field of application.

Worldwide industry activities, standardization work and recent trends in Japan with concrete polymer composites were also discussed.

The new materials presented were high per- formance flexible epoxy systems and improved unsaturated polyester resins concrete for shrink- age control. Hard and brittle nature of amine- cured epoxy system can be improved without decline in mechanical properties and tear resis- tance, by the use of new high performance flexible hardeners.

Generally there are two known problems with the use of unsaturated polyster i.e., odour and shrinkage. A new improved unsaturated polyster resin concrete with controlled shrinkage is developed and commercialised under the name of Syncrete in Europe.

With the use of polymers, several objects can be repaired and restored to-day which were not possible before.
