Osaka International House Foundation is a public-service corporation founded by Osaka City
with permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the purpose of contributing to the
internationalization of Japan. Based in Osaka, International House, Osaka (i-house) acts as a
focal point for international exchange activities within the Kansai Region. By exploring the
history, culture and other local aspects of Japan and other countries the Foundation strives to
help foster a mutual understanding and friendship between citizens, and deepen relationships
between Japan and other countries of the world.

All presentation rooms are equipped with a screen, an LCD projector, and a laptop computer
installed with Microsoft PowerPoint. You will be able to insert your USB flash drive into the
computer and double check your file in PowerPoint. We recommend that you bring two copies
the file in case of one fails. You may also link your own laptop to the provided projector,
however please ensure you have the requisite connector.

Participants are requested to arrive in a timely fashion for all addresses, whether to their own,
or to those of other presenters. Presenters are reminded that the time slots should be divided
fairly and equally between the number of presentations, and that they should not overrun.
The session chair is asked to assume this timekeeping role and summarize clarify key important
issues in each topic.

Topic: "Connected Design - Toward New Design Principles from an Evolutionary and
Global Perspective"

This presentation will discuss the design of everyday things from an evolutionary perspective,
by comparing everyday activities in the natural environments in which the human species
evolved, and in the environments of the modern cities. It is supposed that, in the natural
environments, everyday activities for securing foods and energy, etc., served the functions of
not only these direct purposes but also of constructing human relations, meanings and
communities. Human cognitive and emotional systems have evolved to serve such
functions in the natural environments for over one million years. By contrast, in the modern
environments, these mental systems can hardly function to construct relations, meaning and
communities: our lives in the modern societies are supported by foods and energy from the
entire world, but it is very difficult to have a sense of community there, when we can just pay
money to buy food and turn on a switch to use energy. We have designed our technology so
that we can live a comfortable and convenient life, but in the process we have lost the real
sense of community for which our mental systems have evolved to live in. In "World
Museum Project", a network of educators and researchers around the world, we have been
trying to construct a global community in which we all contribute to the whole world, by
which we are all supported, based on meanings that we share, based on relationships that we
build, based on products we produce and use. Some design principles for globally
extending our visions will be discussed based on observations in global collaborations in the
World Museum Project and some examples of social design projects.

Aaron E. Martinson, M.S.Ed, is a lecturer and course developer in the Department of English
at Sejong Cyber University in Seoul, South Korea. He has taught EFL students of all skill
levels and ages for the past six years. He is currently focusing on research in interface and
communication systems that will improve experiences for distance learners, as well as
research focused on how to incorporate distance learning for those with disabilities.
This presentation will focus on utilizing virtual classrooms for distance and face-to-face
educators, including some of the most mainstream concepts that are currently being utilized,
as well as some future prospects that may interest educators in the near future.
Tools such as social media applications and free learning management systems are now
allowing instructors and learners to stay in contact at high frequencies, which is building
confidence in learners as well as building a sense of community inside and outside of the
classrooms.
It is the goal of this presentation to introduce some of these applications and techniques in
order for dedicated educators to continue to improve the overall quality of their courses as
well as the quality of interactions that happen inside and outside the classrooms. It is also the
hope of the presenter to start a meaningful conversation about which direction these
technologies can and should take as we find ourselves more technologically involved in all
aspects of our lives.
