President’s WelcomeI would like to welcome you to Monterey, CA and the 86th Annual Conference and Exhibitor Showcase of the Mosquito & Vector Control Association of California (MVCAC). Members and staff alike work tirelessly to make this conference a success year-in-and-year-out. This meeting attracts a wide range of public health professionals and experts to exchange knowledge and research regarding the latest developments in mosquito and vector control — especially as they relate to conditions in California.
Mosquito and vector control has changed much in the past 22-years since I entered the industry. In terms of mosquito control, more change has been seen in California over the last decade with the arrival of West Nile virus and invasive species, then was observed in the previous ten decades. Increased globalization and changes in global temperature and weather patterns may ensure that this instability continues into the future. The ultimate goal of MVCAC is to ensure that member districts are prepared to handle these challenges through effective advocacy and education. The Annual Conference plays an integral part in meeting this goal.
It is my honor to welcome California Assembly mem-ber Anna Caballero to this year’s annual conference to be recognized for her valued work and support with AB 527. Her efforts will help ensure that mosquito control in California remains at the forefront and is best equipped to protect public health into the future. In addition, attendees will be able to hear first hand regarding mosquito control efforts due to climatic disasters, not only in California, but those related to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Other symposia will focus on: Mosquito Biology & Disease, Community Engagement & Public Policy, Pesticide Resistance & Applications, Operations, and Flea and Tick Biology & Disease.
A special thank you goes out to all presenters, moder-ators and staff who make this conference possible, especially our conference manager, Rachel Hickerson. Thanks to you all for making this year’s conference, one to remember!
David Heft, MVCAC President
