1:00-1:45 p.m.overview of ut research on Lithium Ion Battery energy Storage System Hazardsofodike Ezekoye, Professor, University of Texas at austin Lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (Li-BESS) are increasingly being used as parts of electrical utility grids for a variety of reasons. Commercial and residential applications of these energy storage systems are also growing. In general, these energy storage systems are quite reliable and safe. In the event of a failure, it likely that fi refi ghters will respond to the failure. The research partnership comprised of The University of Texas at Austin, NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation, Energy Storage Safety Products International (ESSPI), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) received funding from DHS/FEMA to characterize hazards posed to fi refi ghters responding to Li-BESS failures. In this presentation, I will fi rst discuss recent cases of lithium-ion battery ESS failures. I will then discuss the physics of battery thermal runaway and how

thermal runaway propagates failure from cell to cell and module to module. I will then discuss data and tools used to characterize the eff ects of system failure and discuss how research fi ndings might explain some of the documented failures.

11:15 a.m. – NoonCreating Health & Wellness Programming your employees actually enjoy Shannon Hernandez, Chief Creative offi cer, Cardigan Communications GroupFacing rising health care costs and an ever-increasing

competitive talent war, employers are realizing the need to off er robust health and wellness incentives and programming on top of simply off ering great benefi t plans. The trick is determining what your employees (and potential employees) would value and take advantage of so you can maximize your off erings and increase long-term ROI. During this presentation, we discuss the steps necessary to determining what your employees actually want, pairing that with what they need, and creating engaging health and wellness programming and content using the example of a power industry case study.
