Chemistry can contribute to problem solving in numerous areas
– and thus contributes to sustainability
Conference: "Chemical Legislation Today and Tomorrow. Partners&Programmes R&S in EU “, Praha, 22.03.2006, Dr. Reuter 3
Tapping the resources of the 7th EU R&D FPTPs are the favoured tool for industry/academia collaboration in FP 7
TP’s are a framework to unite
stakeholders around:
A common Vision for the technology concerned
A Strategic Research Agenda (SRA)
An Implementation Plan for the SRA
The mobilisation of Critical Mass
SusChem,
the European Technology Platform
for Sustainable Chemistry,
is one of these initiatives
Conference: "Chemical Legislation Today and Tomorrow. Partners&Programmes R&S in EU “, Praha, 22.03.2006, Dr. Reuter 4
Tapping the resources of the 7th EU R&D FP
Why the SusChem initiative?
To strengthen the competitiveness of the chemical industry in
Europe through innovation
To enhance chemical R&D and innovation in Europe
• both in science and industry
To increase public R&D support for chemistry
To align EU and national R&D programmes in chemistry

What will be better in FP 7?
EU research funding shall enhance the competitiveness of European industry (EU treaty)
The 7th R&D Framework Programme will better meet industry’s needs
Industry-led Technology Platforms (TPs) have developed “Strategic Research Agendas” (SRAs) presenting the European dimension of research challenges
From these SRAs the Implementation Action Plans (IAP) shall shape the EU R&D work programmes
These IAPs shall also influence national research programmes

What can be done in the Czech Republic?
Since end 2005: Nominate a government representative for Member States
Mirror Group
Since end 2005: Comment the Strategic Research Agenda (www.suchem.org)
Since end 2005: Nominate a representative of the Czech chemical industry
to define the Implementation Action Plan
Now: Lobby via Czech government and Czech MEPs for
• strong role of chemistry in FP 7
• simplification of FP 7 procedures
25.11.05, London: Stakeholder-Workshop on Strategic Research Agenda
27.08.06, Budapest: Stakeholder-Workshop on Implementation Action Plan
2006: Align SusChem research agenda with Czech national programmes

What can be done in the Czech Republic?
VCI proposes informal cooperation between Germany/Czech
Republic on industrial and scientific level
• In Germany: “Chemistry Programme” with German Ministry of
Education and Science (BMBF): Catalysis/Biocatalysis,
Nanomaterials
• National Implementation Action Plan to be worked out until
September 2006
• Coordination of funding between national and EU authorities via
Member States Mirror Group
Cooperation within the thematic priorities: information
exchange, within research projects …
