8:00 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. Assembly 1 (Keynote - Plenary)

The California “Drought” - How Ecological Landscaping Can Support Resilient Communities

Brock Dolman, Co-Founder and Program Director, Occidental Arts and Ecology Center

Managing water (or lack thereof) on the landscape plays a dominant role in the health, appearance, and livability of our communities. Permaculture design, stormwater management and rainwater harvesting are strategies we can employ from individual rooftops to the broader ecologically sustainable landscape. Conservation Hydrology emphasizes the need for human development designs to move from drainage to retain-age. Moving away from run-off to run-on land uses can result in multiple watershed benefits including reduced flooding, improved water quality, increased groundwater recharge, and improved stream structure and function. Re-thinking our landscapes and land use also brings short- and long-term economic benefits while supporting more resilient communities in California.

9:00 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.

The Best Desert Plants for Northern California Landscapes

Wendy Proud, California Sales Representative, Mountain States Wholesale Nursery

Learn how desert-adapted plants can be the perfect solution to some of the most difficult landscape situations and at the same time offer amazing beauty. Join Wendy Proud as she shares a unique mix of plants native to the southwest that adapt and perform while using far less resources and time to maintain. A selection of plants will be on hand, in addition to information regarding resources for additional selections available. Presentation will discuss plant specifics, planting techniques, the importance of hydro-zoning and examples of plant combinations. Attendees will learn how easily this group of plants can be used in combination with California natives and other drought-tolerant selections from around the world.

Workshop Descriptions (in scheduled order)

Develop A Passion For Soil To Sow The Seeds Of Urban Ecological Regeneration

Steve Zien, Founder, Living Resources Company

Current management practices are escalating the already serious degradation of our urban soils. Our view of soil as dirt must undergo an ethical and theological transformation. We will unearth techniques and tools that will allow the inhabitants of the rhizosphere to reinvigorate our landscapes with minimal human intervention. Learn why the soil deserves our respect, and how to walk quietly upon the earth and appreciate the complex, beautiful, and unseen world beneath our feet.

Sustainable Alternatives to Conventional Hardscape

Bernadette Balics, Founder, Ecological Landscape Design

In this interactive workshop, we will explore products for outdoor floors, walls and ceilings. We will evaluate them for permeability, sourcing, ease of installation, cost, durability, maintenance and life-cycle costing/anaylsis. Attendees are welcome to bring experiences and favorites to share, in addition to those brought by the instructor, and we’ll create a useful catalog of options.

10:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m.

Irrigation Assessment — A Much-Needed Skill and Business Opportunity

Lori Palmquist, Irrigation Designer and Consultant

There’s thousands of existing irrigation systems in California that waste water and/or water plants incorrectly—and they need your help! Many existing landscapes have poorly-designed, installed, and maintained irrigation systems, and our knowledge of irrigation best practices has grown significantly. In this workshop, we’ll show you how to assess existing systems and recommend the right course of action. You don’t have to be an irrigation expert to make observations and recommendations for repairs and upgrades! We’ll step through the process, and provide data collection and report templates. You’ll also get connected to resources--both written and human--that can assist you in this venture.

Workshop Descriptions

Proactive, Water-Friendly (PWF) Integrated Pest Management (IPM): The Why, Not The What

Steve Zien, Founder, Living Resources Company

Conventional pest management programs are typically reactive and based on killing The What (the pest). This routinely results in multiple unintended consequences including the disruption of pollinators and natural enemies, damage to adjacent plants, human exposure to toxins, disruption of the ecosystem, contamination of the environment, and more. Steve will guide you through techniques to identify and manage The Why of pest management, using a proactive PWF-IPM strategy to create a pest-resistant landscape. These strategies minimize and prevent pests, eliminating the need to use reactive methods that are too frequently relied upon by our industry with disturbing repercussions.

Anticipating Water and Keeping It On Site

Dave Phelps, Landscape Architect and Horticultural Consultant, Cagwin and Dorward

We get a lot of water in California. It just comes all at once. Learn how to make the most of what we get and implement the best management practices to keep water safely on site while creating enhanced ecologies, increasing landscape biodiversity, and maximizing the beauty and functionality of the land. Topics covered include rainwater catchment, stormwater management, bio-swales, drainage, and slope stabilization.

11:00 a.m. - 11:50 a.m.

Quarterly Maintenance: Business Model for Sustainable Landscapes

Deva Luna, Lead Designer, EarthCare Landscaping

Once the “Lawn is Gone”, how can you upgrade your services beyond “Mow and Blow”? Get more money for fewer hours of work by creating a niche of higher grade services that are suited to more sustainable landscapes.

On-Site Water Reuse: An Overview

Tony Madrone, Owner/Operator, Indra Designs, Inc.

Call it water recycling, gray water, water catchment, or water reuse, it’s all good…if it’s done right. Landscape water expert Tony Madrone will provide an overview of permitting, equipment, best installation practices, and design tips for on-site water reuse systems. He will also share case studies of exciting projects throughout the Bay area.

New And Emerging Pests Of Fruit And Ornamental Trees

Chuck Ingels, Farm and Horticulture Advisor, UC Cooperative Extension Sacramento County

As a tradeoff with our increasingly global economy and mobility, new insect pests and diseases regularly make their way to our communities and often spread throughout much of California. This presentation will cover several new threats to fruit trees as well as to landscape trees. Learn to identify these pests, what damage they may cause, and the least toxic ways to manage them, if known.

Permaculture: Designing with Nature

Brock Dolman, Co-Founder and Program Director, Occidental Arts and Ecology Center

Permaculture is a design process – based in observation and systems thinking – that enables people to create ecologically sustainable and socially just human landscapes based in natural patterns and processes. We will address the challenge of how human landscapes can best emulate ecology, using the design ethic of composing with - rather than imposing upon - natural systems.

1:15 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Assembly 1 (Plenary)

Resource-Sensitive Landscaping in California: Now and Forever

Ed Laivo, Sales and Marketing Director, Four Winds Growers

California’s on-going drought has ushered up more than just the need to conserve water. It has led to the need to better understand soil conservation and a reminder of pesticide and herbicides usage and their impact on our soil and water resources. The drought has brought to light the urgency to revisit landscape and gardening practices in their entirety in California. This effort is to enact permanent change as part of the preservation of this states limited resources. The environment and the requirement for change is Now and Forever!

Workshop Descriptions

1:45 p.m. - 2:35 p.m.

“Lose the Lawn” Simple Conversion Business Model

Deva Luna, Lead Designer, EarthCare Landscaping

EarthCare Landscaping in Santa Clara County has perfected a template for front yard lawn conversions that can be completed in a few days with a small crew. Learn how they conceived the project, how they have installed hundreds and how you can do the same.

Tree Care Best Practices: A Panel Discussion

Chuck Ingels, Gordon Mann, Torrey Young

Trees play a critical role in almost every landscape, but they require a different set of skills than those used for other landscape plants. Learn from a panel of expert arborists about the best practices for species selection and siting; young tree planting and care; proper irrigation; managing pests and diseases; and pruning tips for young and mature trees.

Zen and the Art of Sheet Mulch Mastery

Dave Phelps, Landscape Architect and Horticultural Consultant, Cagwin and Dorward

With as many recipes as lasagna, sheet mulch specifics can be difficult to define. Learn how to evaluate a site and determine the best course of action to compost turf and weeds in place while building a healthy soil ecology. You don’t have to wait to install plants and irrigation! Learn how to get the benefits of sheet mulching while integrating spray to drip transition, new climate-appropriate plantings, and WELO compliance. No job is too small or too large to implement this important process.

2:45 p.m. - 3:35 p.m.

How to Install and Maintain California Native Grasses and Kurapia in Urban Landscapes

Jodie Sheffield, Sod & Seed Specialist, Research and Development, Delta Bluegrass Company

Living green today often carries the message that you should “lose the lawn.” But don’t take grasses for granted! Find out how to landscape with California native grasses and Kurapia sod.

Finding Plants for Sustainable Landscapes – How Can We Increase The Inventory? (Panel)

Moderator: Ed Laivo, Four Winds Growers; Chris Lewis, CNPS; Keith Miner, Suncrest Wholesale Nursery; Soleil Tranquille, Tranquill Gardens; Mary Walcher, Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery

How many times have you had to find a “close substitute” for the plant you or your designer really wanted in a landscape, because the one you wanted wasn’t available? Representatives from the nursery industry, landscape designers, architects and CA Native Plant Society will discuss what can be done to make more climate-appropriate plants available for sustainable landscapes in northern California.

Best Practices for Drip Irrigation

Lori Palmquist, Irrigation Designer and Consultant

We know that drip is the most efficient method of irrigating landscape plants. WELO requires drip in planted, mulched areas. But for many, it is still unclear as to what exactly defines drip, and how to choose the best drip strategies for different situations. In this workshop, we will clarify the best practices and steps for designing, installing, and maintaining drip systems. You will also come away with a treasure trove of resources that will ensure your success with drip.

3:45 p.m. - 4:35 p.m.

Compost, Mulch and the Urban Environment: An Insider’s Guide

Bob Horowitz, Supervising Environmental Scientist, CalRecycle

This workshop will look at production of compost and mulch from California’s urban environment, and its return to the urban landscape. We will discuss the major drivers of compost production in California, including solid waste laws and climate change initiatives, as well as the regulatory framework set up to ensure protection of public health and the environment. We will touch on some of the current issues in composting in California, including labeling, organic input registration, inert contaminants, quarantines and persistent pesticides. We will look at strategies to help avoid or mitigate some of the pitfalls when purchasing these materials.

Peter Estournes, Horticulturist, Gardenworks, Inc.

Cyclical drought, climate change, and increased population have driven new regulations and more legislation aimed squarely at the last frontier for urban water conservation - outdoor water use. Landscapes have been a target since the 1980’s for water use reduction but the last 10 years have seen more movement than ever towards prescriptive approaches to reduce the perceived overwatering of landscapes in California. This workshop will look at the challenges facing landscape professionals now, and what policy and regulation changes could affect you in the future.

Making Low-Water Look Lush: Choosing Plants That Go Beyond Drought Tolerance

Karrie Reid, UC Cooperative Extension Advisor, San Joaquin County

This class will describe how to choose and install truly low-water plants that satisfy the customer’s need for aesthetic beauty and ecosystem services. We’ll discuss the difference between drought-tolerance and low-water use, and explore current UC research into California natives and newly-introduced low-water plants and their establishment.

4:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m., Assembly 1 (Plenary)

It All Adds Up: Education + Advocacy = Change
