OMA-300 PROCESS ANALYZERPrinciple of Operation: UV Absorbance Spectroscopy

AAI products employ spectroscopy in analysis of chemical composition. As demonstrated by the Beer-Lambert Law, the concentration of a given component is directly proportional to its absorbance (the quantity of light it absorbs or scatters) at a specified light wavelength.

In the OMA-300, white light is transmitted via fiber optic cable from the light source to the flow cell. In the flow cell, the gas sampled from the process stream interacts with the light signal. Each gaseous component has a unique spectral footprint, meaning that each analyte absorbs different quantities of light at different wavelengths. If the concentration of an analyte increases, so does its absorbance at the monitored wavelengths.

After passing through the sample, the light travels via fiber optic cable to the holographic grating, which physically separates the white light into its constituent wavelengths. The grating focuses the differentiated wavelengths onto designated photodiodes in the spectrometer.

The Spectrometer

The heart of the OMA-300 is the nova-II spectrometer. Its diode array contains 1,024 photodiodes--each designated to detect a specific wavelength. Collecting light intensity data from all these diodes simultaneously, the analyzer continuously produces full spectra of analyte absorbance at an ultra-fine resolution (nearly 1 nm). This entire process--from the xenon lamp to the diodes--is instantaneous and involves no moving parts, giving the OMA-300 the fastest response time in the field.

In spectroscopic stream analytics, higher light transmittance means robust data. This system is designed strictly to optimize light throuput. The dispersive holographic grating in the nova-II improves upon the Czerny-Turner design by erasing the need for focusing mirrors: having fewer reflective elements reduces stray light and contributes to a more stable spectrometer construction. On the sampling end, the flow cell optics are precisely aligned for repeatability, and our fiber optic cables are manufactured in-house to ensure maximal transmittance.

Multi-Component Analysis

Often times, multiple components in a process stream will show strong absorbance in the same spectral region. Consider one of our environmental CEMS (continuous emissions monitoring systems) applications, which requires analysis of the pollutants SO2 and NOX in a stack gas stream. SO2, NO, and NO2 all absorb light within a tight UV range; most optical analyzers will struggle to determine how much each analyte is contributing to the total absorbance in that narrow region. In fact, common analysis techniques inovolve exorbitant measures like oxidizing all NO into NO2, simply so a single-component analyzer can handle a collective NOX concentration reading. This style of measurement is indirect, requires expensive catalysts and ozone, and multiplies the margin of error--just an illustration of what can be gained from true multi-component analysis.

The OMA-300 overcomes cross-interference by obtaining a full, high-resolution spectrum and applying a set of proprietary algorithms to the data. The mathematical routine--”over-determination”--uses regression equations, with constants harvested from standard absorbance spectra, to de-convolute the individual components’ absorbance from the composite absorbance. Essentially, the software solves for the unknowns (component concentrations) using the additive absorbance data from hundreds of individual wavelengths simultaneously. The accuracy of this method is unrivaled.

Sampling System

AAI builds custom sampling systems for many applications; our design proceeds from the needs of the process to the drawing board, not vice versa. Our basic model sampling system provides an automated zero cycle, an integrated flow cell, a back pressure regulator, flowmeters for fast loop and sample loop flow control, and built-in filtration. The flow cell can handle up to 3,000 lbs of pressure and 150 °C, and its user-friendly design makes it extremely simple to maintain.

The AAI Brand

Applied Analytics, Inc. manufactures process analyzers and sampling systems for the chemical, petrochemical, power generation, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor industries, as well as various environmental applications. We have over two decades of experience in designing and installing monitoring solutions that are rugged in their stability and elegant in their automated performance.
