Gastown: Vancouver’s first downtown core is named after “Gassy” Jack Deighton who arrived in 1867 to open the area’s first saloon. Gastown, incorporated as the City of Vancouver in 1886, quickly grew to become the nation’s third largest and most cosmopolitan city. The Gastown of today has retained its historic charm, independent spirit, and distinctiveness. This is a great place to shop for souvenirs and First Nations art, people-watch on a sidewalk patio with a handcrafted cocktail, or to discover the talents of local clothing and furniture designers. A visit to see and hear the Westminster chimes of the Steam Clock on Water Street is a must.

Granville Island: Converted to one of Vancouver’s must-visit areas in 1979 from what used to be an industrial wasteland under the Granville Bridge, Granville Island boasts a unique mix of artisan boutiques and souvenir stores, breweries and distilleries, and restaurants and cafes. Open 7 days a week, the Granville Island Public Market is Vancouver’s indoor hub of epicurean delight, featuring an assortment of colourful food and produce stores, handcrafted products, and the very finest in unique gifts.

Visit the indoor tropical garden and bird sanctuary at Bloedel Conservatory, walk the landscaped paths of the gorgeous quarry gardens, and admire the collection of exotic and native trees in the arboretum. Those looking to be more active should check

Steveston Village: A historic fishing village lined with shops, restaurants, and numerous heritage attractions. Boasting a beautiful boardwalk along the Fraser River, Steveston Village is also a favourite place for locals to bike or take long walks on foot. Visit the Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturdays and Sundays to buy fresh caught seafood direct from the fishermen’s docked boats, and discover the history of the village and various canneries along the River at Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Britannia Shipyards. Don’t leave before trying the famous fish and chips from Pajo’s, freshly made waffle cones and frozen yogurt from Timothy’s, and an ice cold slushy topped with soft serve from Screamers.
