Raise Against Rape by 500 School Girls in Nepal
Background:
Nepal is intensively suffering from Rapes, sexual harassment, discriminations and similar gender based violence. Although government is strongly committed to control these incidences through strong legal and institutional frameworks in reality these incidences are increasing day by day. This increasing number is the context of those incidences which are brought in the legal action frameworks. The conditions of the incidences which are hidden, suppressed and are not brought in the legal frameworks are still unknown. Government agencies, non-government actors, civil society and media are intensely focused on exposing the incidences of the women violence, gender based violence, harassments and discriminations they are less concerned in the ways to control these incidences.
Lack of strong defense and resistance from girls is one major reason behind its increasing intensity. Academic curriculums in Nepal lack strong materials which can strengthen girls to defend violence against them. Similarly mainstream media are less concerned on the publication and broadcasting awareness raising materials against gender based violence. Government and non-government agencies are not effectively working to empower women on self defense and resistance against sexual violence. They lack strong networking and forums where they could share their sorrows and experiences.
Rationale of the Project
Most of the victims of those incidences are young school going girls. Creation of strong peer support, knowledge of legal assistance and self defense techniques can enhance their capacity to deal with such incidences of sexual violence. This project will train girls on self defense techniques, available legal mechanisms and supporting agencies. It will create forum through networking leader among trained girls from various schools. They will be provided leadership and communication trainings. They will be equipped with sufficient awareness raising materials and will be mobilized to scale out activities of this project with the campaign naming "Raise against Rape".
Project Impact
It will prepare girls for self defense and legal remedies. It will also mobilize school girls in awareness raising campaigns. It will scale out activities to various parts of countries. Project activities will be scaled up to pressurize policy formulating and implementing level through lobbying and pressurizing media and social campaigns.
