ChennaiCONCEPT NOTE FOR THE FORUMThe world is in throngs of conflict and violence. The Global Peace Index (2014) calculated by the Institute for Economics and Peace's (IEP's) for 162 countries found only 11 countries that were not involved in conflict of one kind or another. These are: Switzerland, Japan, Qatar, Mauritius, Uruguay, Chile, Botswana, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Panama and Brazil. We are already passing through one of the most violent phase of human history. We have thousands of strategic experts for planning victory in war, but very few Peace experts to perpetuate Peace. Peace is not a static state which can be defined merely as absence of conflict and war. Peace is dynamic state maintained through harmonious balance.

In recent years, Peace activism is gaining currency. The discourse is littered with terminology like Peace crusade, Peace warriors etc. But, these surely lack the power of resonance with the public at large. The whole vocabulary bereft of soft religiosity and sombre spirituality generates the inverse movement of spiralling violent extremism. We need to embed religiosity in the discourse of Peace. An inter-faith dialogue on establishing principles of Peace can create Peace as a religion.

Asia is the land of emergence of all major religions. Sages and Prophets always worked out the way (Tao) to establish perpetual peace. This part of the world has been blessed with the avataran of Buddha, Jesus Christ, Laotze, Nagarjuna, Bodhidharma, Milarepa, Padmasambhava, Huineng, Guru Nanak, Tagore, Kang Yu-wei and Gandhi. All of them emphasized upon the middle path to find harmony in family, society, state and the world. The obsession of current generation is with the extremes. There is extreme of virtual world, extreme of politics, extreme of health, extreme of love. These extremes distort the human nature. Body individual, social, political- becomes obese and obscene. Terrorism is the extreme of protest. There is all-round obsession and indulgence with extreme behaviour. Peace activism has fallen in similar trap. Though the end is moral and ethical, methods employed are fallacious. In view of the backdrop of rising tensions in Asia, the Society for Asian Integration is taking first significant step towards building peace through peaceful means. With the launch of the Asia Peace Forum involving apolitical religious and social leaders, a new chapter in the history of Asian integration will be opened. We aim to organize a Round Table Dialogue on Religion for Peace and Peace as Religion. A delegation of 100 monks from China under the mentorship of Vajra Master Jinke Xuanlei from Beijing will be holding dialogue with Indias most acclaimed voices on peace.

The programme will be held during the month of February on the eve of Basant Panchami when the new Spring if beauty and peace dawns . The location has been fixed at Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, situated near Rajghat, the samadhi sthal of Mahatma Gandhi, another Apostle of Peace. Under the banner of Asia Peace Forum, we plan to extend the dialogue of Peace in the region spanning from the Black Sea to the Yellow Sea and river Lena to River Cauvery. A successful beginning can bring together Asian nations and the idea for common culture and economic effervescence for whole Asia will gain a peaceful foothold!
