NEW YORK SPEAKING 2014

Circle K at the club level is wonderful. You go along week to week, attending meetings, serving your neighborhood, and befriending kind people who are passionate about service. Imagine this, but multiplied a dozen times over, on a larger scale, and over a longer period of time. That's what dis-trict events are like. If you have been to one before, then you know what I'm talking about. If you have-n't, then I invite you to keep on reading to get ex-cited about the next one that's coming up. In short, New York Speaking (NYS) is NY District Circle K's annual fall conference. However, New York Speaking is so much more than just a conference, just like District Large Scale Service Project (DLSSP) is more than just a service project, and District Convention (DCON) is more than just a convention. At New York Speaking, like at other district events, you will have the opportunity to meet Circle K members from other schools in the district. You'll be placed on a team with a mix of students from around the state, and your team will compete in various challenges throughout the

weekend, such as fellowship challenges, scavenger hunts, and workshop attendance. This year's conference theme is NYCKI Sails Around the World. We have combined a nautical theme with an around-the-world theme. There will be plenty of activities throughout the weekend that are inspired by this theme. On Saturday, we will have a day of workshops and a service fair. Work-shop categories include leadership skills, profes-sional development, and CKI skills. During the service fair, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the different organizations that NY Circle K supports. As you and your club begin to prepare for New York Speaking, remember to take pictures us-ing the hashtag #NYS2014! We want pictures of everything - from filling out your registration forms, to creating sailor hats, to packing everyone into the car for the ride up. The weekend will be full of op-portunities to learn, grow, and just have fun! Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions at all.

From March 20th to March 22nd, New York’s Circle K International District is going to have the most amazing convention known to man, District Convention. Only the nerds call it “District Convention” so, us cool kids like to refer to it as “DCON.” This convention is your chance to build up your leadership skills through multiple workshops, make some epic new friends, partici-pate in various service projects, and possibly be-come a part of the District Executive Board! This weekend in Albany is flawless fun full of fantastic knowledge. Wow, look at the alliteration. You are

essentially wined and dined while you become an even better Circle K member or future Kiwanian. This year’s theme is kept a secret until our New York Speaking Conference in Lake George on No-vember 7th! If you want to be in person to experi-ence the most kanyetastic reveal, registration for New York Speaking is open until October 15th. DCON is going to be amazing, exciting, and an event that Yeezus would be proud to attend, so grab your fellow members and get ready for it! District Large Scale Service Project — Experiences

“This District Large Scale Service Project was both my first DLSSP and my first Circle K event, and it was nothing short of the perfect way to be intro-duced to such an amazing organization. Only in an organization like CKI are you able to see a bunch of college students helping out at a place like Kamp Kiwanis in the middle of freezing rain on a Saturday afternoon and enjoying themselves while doing it. We were all able to come together in the name of service for others, I was able to make a bunch of new friends whom share a passion for service, and just knowing how much we as a group of around 90 people did for the Kamp made attending DLSSP well worth it.” -Terrell Frederick

“My name is Sadie A. Lincourt. I am a freshman at Clarkson University. I recently attended DLSSP with two other girls from my college's Circle K. I really enjoyed DLSSP. It was a completely new experience for me. I've done a lot of volunteer work in my past, but nothing quite like this. The weather was certainly not ideal, but I'm still glad I went. I was able to meet some really wonderful people, make a few new friends, and really give back to the commu-nity.” -Sadie Lincourt

“This year’s DLSSP was my first time at the event, and my first official event with Circle K, and it com-pletely exceeded my expectations. It was fun to meet many of the mem-bers from across New York and, al-though we did not have the best weather, closing up Kamp Kiwanis for the season was a great way to bond with old and new friends. I strongly encourage every Circle K member to attend next year’s DLSSP event!” -Joshua Hill

in review We have had quite a few RTCs in the past months. From

the RTC that took place at the University of Buffalo to the most

recent one at Marist in the Hudson Valley Division, these events

have been happening all over the division and have been work-

ing to educate our members about what CKI truly works to ac-

complish. Each RTC received attendance from many schools

and many people from each area and at these events bonded

as CKI members. Each RTC entailed valuable information that

was given to officers and even general members, and these

events had very positive reviews. I look forward to hearing about

the success we have with future RTCs.

The RTC in the Hudson Valley hosted by LTG Luisanna is an

example of how even doing a RTC locally can do amazing

things. It was held at Marist College and had both of the schools

in the division present them being Marist and SUNY New Paltz. As

SUNY New Paltz is my home club I was able to be in attendance

for this and what I experienced at this event was an atmosphere

of friendliness and learning. We started by having some small talk

then we split into groups. The first group was every member that

did not hold an elected position they went in a group to a room

where they were educated on CKI as an organization and then

went on to do service projects where they wrote letters to soldiers

and made bookmarks for kids. The other group was anyone who

held an elected position. They were split up with their counter-

parts from the opposing school and then these counterparts

worked together to learn from and teach the other in any way

that they could. This helped any e-board member that was un-

sure of their position or what to do learn and it also allowed e-

board members to share tricks with others in their division. The

whole experience was a great way for the division to grow to-

gether and become more connected.

While the RTCs which happened within a single Division

went well I can also say that RTCs that combined divisions went

well also. A prime example of this is the RTC that was held at NYU

which involved Liberty, empire, and long island Divisions. AT this

RTC 3 divisions met to learn about CKI and clear up any misun-

derstandings that were present. With members present from

each division we got to fellowship with new friends and got to be

reunited with old friends. The whole Event went on without a hitch

and each of the members learns about CKI and got to clear up

misunderstandings they had about certain things on the District

level. They had a good breakfast and had an easy time making

the event work well.

Overall the RTCs went on without any problems and

showed that even small gatherings can have big impacts.

in review On Saturday, September 20th, our district held our 4th Annual Ki-wanis Family Picnic at Cunningham Park in Queens, New York. This year, over 60 members from 7 Circle K clubs, 10 Key Clubs, and 1 Kiwanis club attended and we were fundrais-ing for the Eliminate Project. We wanted to make the event feel like an actual picnic so we encouraged atten-dees to bring their own lunch and snacks to eat and share with every-one. One highlight from the picnic was the Duct Tape Fashion Show. Each team had to make an outfit based on a given theme using duct tape and a garbage bag and the model will then walk down the run-way to show off their outfit to the audience and judges. For the first round, we had female models who had to show off the Best K-Family Spirit and the winner was none other than our District Editor, Holy Cheong! We had male models who had to be dressed in the Dream Prom Dress for the second round and Steven Jacoby, the Bayside Key Club faculty advisor, took the win for that round! The Board Auction was our last event for the picnic where Key Club and Circle K district officers were auctioned off to get pied. Our highest bid during the auction was $60 to pie Aaron Cheung, Division 11 Lieutenant Governor of New York District Key Club! With the picnic and the auction, we raised $374 for the Eliminate Project; that means we saved 207 babies!

“It's always a pleasure to be surrounded by the K-Family! It was fantastic

to see so many old and new faces who have been in the K-Family for

years. Despite the ever so present bees, we had lots of fun showing off

our K-Family spirit with duck tape fashion and raising money for The Elimi-

nate Project from the no-hands cookie eating contest and pieing our

lovely officers. The long travel was worth the laughs and being around

such wonderful, caring people. “ - Sara Louie

“This was my second K-Family Picnic and this time I was involved with

planning it. One thing we did not foresee was the enormous amount of

bees in the park. They were all over our food, drinks, faces, etc. Regard-

less, we continued our activities and it was really fun. We had a duct

tape-trash bag fashion show and it was hilarious seeing the guys walk

down the ‘runway.’ Overall, I think this event was a great turnout and I

can't wait for the next one!” - Holy Cheong

“The K family picnic was a day filled with fun, fellowship and loads of

laughter. We participated in many games throughout the picnicand

were able to socialize with other branches of Kiwanis. The day was an
