IMPORTANT INFORMATION LEADING UP TO COMRADES AND
AFTER COMRADES
For all our new members, please take note of the following functions for all members and
family members and friends of the club, and not only for those taking part in the Comrades
Marathon:
Boksburg Athletic Club is a club steeped in tradition and here are a few of the functions with
regards the Comrades Marathon.
F U N C T I O N S
CHAIRMAN’S RUN AND BREAKFAST
SUNDAY MAY 26, 2013 - Proceedings will be as follows:
06:15 - 06:45 - COMRADES HANDOUTS (to all members that have qualified to
run the Comrades 2013 road race)
2013 Comrades Runners to fill in 2013 Incentive Form.
(No form no handout). (See attached).
NOVICES (those that have NOT run Comrades before, just put your
Name and Surname on the form and hand in to the relevant
committee member). Collect Comrades Handout from Committee Room next to the office (Club Room No. 2).
Please note that to be eligible to win the Incentive Award
(Most Improved Award) you have to have run your previous
Comrades Marathon in Boksburg Athletic Club colours.
06:45 – 07:10 Team Photographs, Announcements and Acknowledgements.
(Novices, those going for 10, those going for 20, families etc.)

07:15 – 08:15 Chairman’s Run +/- 8km training run in one Big Bus.
Individuals who pass the Chairman are liable to buy drinks for the
whole group. Anybody is welcome to take part in the run it is in the
format of a training run however there is no charge involved.
08:30 – late Breakfast at the Silver Wolf Spur – Carnival Mall.
(Each person will be liable for their own Bill). Spur offer a
Magic breakfast for R19.95 (excluding coffee). (This includes
2 eggs, 3 rashers of bacon, a pile of chips and onion rings and
2 slices of toast. You are however not restricted to the Breakfast
as detailed above)
(If you choose to go home and shower and change after the
Chairman’s Run, then please be aware that you may find yourself and
your family falling into a Queue, unless you have arranged for
someone to keep you seats).
Please seat yourselves in groups of people who can share the bill as
waiters will be assigned to tables and not individuals.
Fill in the “2013 Trifecta”, “2013 Exacta” and “2013 Prediction
Lists”. These cost R10.00 per list and you stand a chance of
winning big bucks. (Place forms with money in boxes provided when
collecting your handout) (Please ensure you staple monies to your
form).
(All lists except “Prediction List” are attached, I will send
“Prediction List”out via email later this week or they will be available
when you collect your handout.
What are the Trifecta, Exacta and Prediction Lists and how do they
work???
Fill in the TRIFECTA Form (This is where you Predict the first 3 ladies
and first 3 men from Boksburg Athletic Club to cross the finish line at
Comrades)
(Place your form and R10.00 in the box provided when you collect your
handout.
Should your prediction be closest to the final results you will get all the
money in the TRIFECTA kitty. (Fill in as many forms as you like but it
costs R10.00 per form).

Fill in the EXACTA Form (This is where you Predict your own finish time)
(Place your form and R10.00 in the box provided when you collect your
handout). Should your actual finish time be closest to your Predicted
time you will win all the money in the EXACTA kitty. (Fill in as many
forms as you like but it costs R10.00 per form).
The PREDICTION LIST is drawn up by the President. He will randomly
choose +/-20 runners from the club and then choose a theme (e.g.
Movies, Music) A runner will then be paired up with a movie/song and
given a rating. You must Predict the time you think the runner will
complete the Comrades. You have to fill in predictions for every runner
on the list. Should you think the runner will not complete the race you
must put 13 hours next to his/her name). Should your overall predicted
time be the closest to the true finish time of all the competitors you will
then win all the money in the PREDICTION Kitty. (You can fill in as
many forms as you like but it costs R10.00 per form).
ALL THESE MONETARY PRIZES GET HANDED OUT AT THE “ACHES
AND PAINS” EVENING ON SATURDAY, JUNE 08, 2013.
THE MORE FORMS THAT ARE FILLED IN THE MORE CHANCE YOU
HAVE OF WINNING HEAPS OF CASH.

TO
A SPECIAL COMRADES CHURCH SERVICE
All Comrades Runners and Families have been invited to attend a Special Comrades Service
at the Northfield Methodist Church on Sunday May 26, 2013, at 18:00. The service,
will offer you prayers and encouragement for the race.
The church is situated on the corner of Aerodrome Drive and Webb Street, Airfield,
Benoni. (Please make an effort to attend).

SUNDAY, JUNE 02, 2013 : “C-Day” (Durban to Pietermaritzburg) 86.96kms/54 miles
Start: 05:30 – Finish: 17:30.
Tent Site at the finish is No. 1 (See Map)
(Look out for the Boksburg Athletic Club Banners). Family members and friends, please
remember that the runners are tired after running 89.96kms and need space to lie in the
shade, so please make room for them under the gazebo).
COMRADES CLUB TENT and UMBRELLAS ON THE ROUTE
The Club Gazebo will be situated behind the BP Garage as you exit Cato Ridge Town at
about the 27km to go point. The person in control will be Gareth Bown, but he will need
some help, so who can offer please. This is not a job that can be done by only 1 person.
Please note that if Gareth does not have any other people helping him on the day, he will
do his utmost to hand out goodies to our club runners with Seedings A and B but
thereafter runners will have to wait or find their goodies themselves.
If you have any goodies that you would like to have at the Gazebo, please bring it with
you when you collect your handout and place it in the box marked CATO RIDGE that will
be located outside the office. (Please ensure your goodies are well marked with your
RACE NUMBER and NAME AND SURNAME, and if necessary mixing instructions for
liquids). (We will not bring any supplements/drinks back to the Club after the race they
will be disposed of on Comrades Day). Gareth Bown and supporters will be manning the
Cato Ridge gazebo on race day.
BOB HARVEY will be at the 12kms to go mark (Polly Shorts/Ashburton) if you would like
to put any goodies into the box. Same applies as above. Ensure all goodies are well
marked with your RACE NUMBER and NAME AND SURNAME, and if necessary mixing
instructions for liquids.) Bob’s box will be marked ASHBURTON.
IF YOU CANNOT MAKE IT TO THE OFFICE TO COLLECT YOUR HANDOUT ON MAY 26,
2013 YOU WILL STILL HAVE TIME UP UNTIL WEDNESDAY, 29 MAY, 2013 (12:00)

This is a wonderful social gathering the day after Comrades
where runners celebrate, sympathise and just share their
previous day’s experience. It is also a time to thank and let
those supporters know just how special they are to us and
that they contribute to our run much more than they will ever
know. Everybody to pay for their own drinks, eats etc.

BOKSBURG “Aches and Pains” party – Ferreira’s in Rietfontein Road, Boksburg.
this occurs a week later when most people are back in Boksburg and attempting to recover. We
celebrate with a few funny awards which are handed out all in good spirit. We enjoy a light meal
and lots of dancing.
Time : 18:30 till Late.
Price: R100.00 per person - both runners and non-runners.
Cash bar available. (The cost includes a light meal in the form of a carvery).
Prizes awarded on the evening of the Aches and Pains will include the following categories:

SNIPPETS OF INFORMATION
A little bit of history: In 1977 (Up Run) 27 Boksburg Athletic Club members entered the Comrades Marathon.
10 achieved silver medals – Vito Lolli 7:02; Tommy Malone 7:07; Dave Boyd 7:07; Tony Lace
07:16; Nico Dormehl 7:17; Clarence Botha 7:20; Jack Mok 07:21; Peter Pretorius 7:21; Brian
Shephard 7:25 and Oelof Vorster (Snr) 7:25.
And now to the present: 126 Members will be tackling the Big “C” this year. In 2012, 155 members qualified to run Comrades. Could the drop in numbers be because it is an “up”run?
All our runners have worked very hard with regards their training for this years run.
Frank and his group went down to Durban and held a training camp there running along the
Comrades route in preparation for the big day. Training runs were organized by the club over
the Easter weekend and the final long run the Perky’s Punisher was held on May 01. Perky’s
Punisher is a mind bender (8km x 8 laps) and a few members took part in this training run.
Quite a few of our members have been struck by injury and will not be able to take part this
year. Better luck next year guys.
Members with A seedings are: George Benade, Karel Burger, Lindy-Lee Folscher, Mark
Humphreys, Thabo Modise, Joseph Morowane, Dieter Muller, Rudolf Oberholzer, Lucky
Ramakuwela, Patrick Snyman, Wynand Strydom and Derek van der Spuy.
There are 3 Medical Practitioners are taking part (Mfundiso Zondo, Simon Ward and Lindy-Lee
Folscher)
4 Committee members are taking part this year (Jenny and Sheree Rogers, Bronwyn Strydom
and Neil Cochran).
Vice-President Gavin Bruce will be taking part in his 15th Comrades this year.
14 novices (running Comrades for the first time) will be lining up in Durban this year:
Shaun Bartram (H seeding); Liezel Best (D Seeding); Louis Botha (CC Seeding); Nicole Da

hoping to finish his 3rd Comrades and Keith his 5th. Younger brother Rowan will be taking part
in his 5th Comrades and he has a D Seeding.

3 Personal Trainers will be taking part this year: Liezel Best, Andre Vieira and Monica Vorster.
I hope they are going to put into practice what they preach.
Tyan Barends will be running his 7th Comrades this year (his 2nd in Boksburg Athletic Club
colours).
8 members will be running their tenth comrades this year and will receive their permanent
numbers when they finish: George Benade, Lindsay Noel, Martin Simon, Donavan Skinner,
Patrick Snyman, Eric van der Merwe and Cosnath Zitha. Patrick Snyman last ran in Boksburg
Athletic Club colours in 2008 and he has 5 silver medals to his name.
Timothy Amiras will taking part in his 11th Comrades and will run in his permanent number 11282
for the first time. Timothy’s best time was in 2005 when he completed the run in 08:53:59.
This number previously belonged to another Boksburg Athletic Club member, the late Elden
Robinson who finished his one and only Comrades in 1984 in a time of 10:13:58.
Susan Laybourn and Precious Kazamula will also be running their 11th Comrades and will be
running in their permanent numbers for the first time. Susan ran her best time in 2011
finishing in 09:43:01 and Precious ran her best time in 2009 finishing in 09:11:06
Klaus Bartels will be running to achieve his permanent number, unfortunately last year Klaus was
unable to finish the race. Klaus has a B Seeding.
George Benade achieved his first silver medal in 2012 in a time of 07:26:42, I am sure he will
achieve another 1 this year.
Marinda Coetzee, Scott Dawson, Shelley van der Spuy will be taking part in their 12th Comrades
Marathon.
Andries Du Preez will be taking part in his 5th Comrades but his first in Boksburg Athletic Club
colours. Andries previously ran for Striders. Unfortunately in 2001 Andries was unable to
finish the race.
Phil Burmeister will be taking part in his 15th Comrades this year.
Jeffrey Cloete last took part in the Comrades in 2010 at the age of 25 and finished in a time of
10:53:54. This will be Jeff’s 2nd run.
Adele Cowley last lined up for the Comrades in 2007, this will be her 2nd run. In 2007 she
finished in 09:45:53, Mandy Mackridge will also be taking part in her 2nd run. Mandy finished
the 2012 race in a time of 11:26:47.

Steven Steyn and Nico Van Vollenhoven will also be taking part in their 2nd Comrades. Steven
finished the race in 2012 in a time of 10:30:40 and Nico in 2005 in a time of 10:54:42.
New member to the club Deon van Wyk will be running his 2nd Comrades as well. Previously Deon
ran for Toyota and finished the 2011 Comrades in a time of 11:55:15.
Fred Strombeck last ran in 2012 and finished in 11:29:50. Fred will taking part for the 2nd time.
Neil Cochran will be taking part in his 23rd Comrades Marathon at the age of 61.
Mark Humphreys (who also completed Iron Man this year and achieved a silver medal in the
2012 Comrades), Franz Kuyvenhoven, Thabo Moloi, Rudolf Oberholzer and Hanno Pienaar will be
taking part in their 3rd Comrades. Can Rudolf earn himself a silver medal this year? His times
have improved as he has been training very hard. In 2011 Rudolf finished in a time of 09:51:42,
and in 2012 he finished in a time of 08:14:21. Good Luck Rudolf.
Monica Vorster (nee Neuling) will be taking part in her 3rd Comrades this year. Monica finished
the race in 2002 but unfortunately in 2006 she was unable to complete the race. Monica has a
B seeding this year.
Jacques Oelofse last ran in 2009 and is hoping to achieve his 8th Comrades medal.
Jabulani Ngwenya will be taking part in his 3rd Comrades, unfortunately Jabulani did not start
the 2012 Comrades.
Richard Ngwenya will be taking part in his 13th Comrades this year and he has a C Seeding.
Peace Borake (D seeding), Tseko Mabote (C seeding) and Tebogo Chake (D seeding) will be
taking part in their 4th Comrades this year.
Percy Khumalo and Simon Motloung will be running their 13th Comrades this year.
Frans Coetzee will be taking part in his 14th Comrades this year, his 3rd in Boksburg colours.
Josias Makoro will be taking part in his 21st race this year. Josias did not take part in 2012.
Josias has 9 silver medals to his name. Josias has a B seeding.
Wayne McBowles will be running his 3rd Comrades this year. In 2012 he finished in a time of
08:52:54. In 2011 he finished in a time of 10:26:27. Wayne has a B seeding.
Michael Sithole will also be running his 14th Comrades this year. Michael has earned 5 silver
medals and has a C seeding this year.

Scott Meredith last ran in 2010, he is taking part in his 3rd Comrades. His first run was in
2001.
Mandi Dudula (E seeding) will be running in his 18th Comrades Marathon this year.
Hannelie Dunn will be taking part in her 8th Comrades this year. Johan Dunn will be taking part
in his 14th run. Johan last ran in 2010.
Lindy-Lee Folscher will be taking part in her 7th Comrades this year. Danny Folscher will be
taking part in his 2nd.
Riaan Pieterse last ran in 2011 and will be lining up for his 2nd Comrades.
Thabo Modise will be taking part in his 8th Comrades. His best run was in 2011 when he
completed the race in 07:56:26.
School teacher Andre Dercksen will be taking part in his 4th Comrades this year.
Mishack Mofokeng will be aiming to finish his 6th race this year. He last finished the race in
2007.
Jaun-Pierre van Wyk will be taking part in his 6th Comrades and Rita van Wyk in her 5th
Comrades, her first time as a Master.
Frank da Ascencao has 25 Comrades Medals to his name. (Frank has run all his Comrades in
Boksburg Athletic Club colours) Frank has achieved 20 silver medals, 2 Bill
Rowan medals and 3 Bronze medals. Frank started running Comrades in 1984. What an
achievement. Frank is hoping for medal no 26. His youngest daughter Nicole will be taking part
for the first time.
Tyrone De Saedeleer will be attempting his 2nd Comrades this year, unfortunately in 2010 he
was unable to complete the run . Good Luck Tyrone.
Nikelwa Gunya will be running in Boksburg Athletic Colours for the first time this year. Her
previous club was Lesedi. She last finished the Comrades in 2011.
Gregg Peebles will be taking part in his 4th Comrades this year. His 2011 finish time was
09:26:37 and his 2012 finish time was 09:26:53.
Who will the youngest finisher be: Justin Dunn (1992); Monique Koekemoer (1992); Lindi
Robbertze (1991); John Kok (1990); Phumlani Mthethwa (1989); Deon van Wyk (1989).

Who will the oldest finisher be : Jabulani Ngwenya (1947); Gavin Bruce (1948), Neil Cochran
(1950), Phil Burmeister (1951), Johan Venter (1951) or Eric Oaker (1951).
Theunis Broodryk and Theuns Coetzee will be taking part in their 16th Comrades this year.
Theuns Coetzee best time was set in 2005 when he finished in 07:55:58.
Dieter Muller will be taking part in his 18th Comrades marathon this year. I am sure he will
achieve his 4th silver medal this year.
Wynand Strydom will be taking part in his 19th Comrades. Wynand will be hoping to win his 5th
silver medal.
Will Angelina Moreo run in her bridal outfit again this year or will she surprise us with a new
outfit? Angelina will be lining up for the 21st time, sadly, Angelina has only been able to
complete the full distance 14 times.
Joseph Morowane (A seeding) will be running his 18th Comrades Marathon. Joseph has 12 silver
medals to his name.
John Kok will be attempting to finish his 3rd Comrades this year, unfortunately in 2011 he was
unable to complete the race. Morokolo Ramakgapola will also be attempting to finish his 3rd
Comrades this year, he did not start in 2012.
Bashier Nhlapo (C Seeding), Christopher Nhlapo (C Seeding), Mfundiso Zondo (D Seeding) and
Eric Oaker (G Seeding) will be taking part in their 9th Comrades this year.
Lucky Ramakuwela (A seeding) will be running his 5th Comrades and I am sure he will achieve
another silver medal. Lucky completed the 2012 race in 07:00:03, his best time since his first
race in 2006, however he has never taken longer than 8 hours to finish the race.
Running in race number “62” Amanda Harvey will be taking part in her 8th Comrades Marathon.
Husband Bob and Dad, Tommy Malone, will be manning the water point at Polly
Shorts/Ashburton.
(Tommy Malone, is a founder member of Boksburg Athletic Club and he finished 1st in the
Comrades marathon in 1966 and 2nd in the 1967 Comrades marathon). Tommy first ran the
Comrades in Boksburg Athletic Club colours in 1976. The club was formed in October of 1975.
Tommy has earned 2 gold medals and 8 silver medals.

Stanley Kruger has started 7 times but has only managed to finish the race 3 times. Hope you
have a good run this year Stanley.
Julie Morrison will be running without any of her family members to keep her company this
year. Julie will be taking part in her 16th Comrades.
Rashika Rampersadh will be taking part in her 7th Comrades. Last year Rashika finished the
race in a time of 09:52:51 a lot slower than her 2011 time of 08:46:01. Rashika has a C seeding.
Training partners Marlene and Johan Venter will be taking part in their 5th Comrades this year.

Adele Hechter will be taking part in her 2nd Comrades. With all the hard work she has been
putting in to her training, I am sure Adele will stand a chance of winning the “Most Improved”
Award this year.
Molefe Motseki will also be running in his Perpetuity Number for the first time this year.
One of the “3 Amigos”, Collen Rautenbach will be lining up for his 5th Comrades this year. David
Jones had decided not to run this year and Scott Dawson is running his 12th.
Steve Hugo will be attempting to complete his 7th Comrades this year, his first in Boksburg
Athletic Club colours. Steve has 2 silver medals and 4 Bill Rowans to his name.
Aletta Mkhwanazi will be taking part in her 8th Comrades this year.
Jan van der Linde will be taking part in his 8th Comrades marathon. His best time is 07:37:56
run in 2012. Jan has a B Seeding. Hopefully Jan will achieve a Silver medal this year.
Phumlani (Sifiso) Mthethwa will be running his 2nd Comrades this year, last year Phumlani
finished in 07:56:19. Hopefully he has been training hard this year and can earn himself a silver
medal by finishing under 7:30.
Jenny Rogers (General Committee Member) will be taking part in her 14th Comrades this year,
daughter Sheree (Vice-Chairman of the Club) her 9th and her other daughter Bronwyn Strydom
(Social Convenor) her 13th.
Billy Geyer will be taking part in his 14th Comrades this year with training partner Theuns
Coetzee.

Muziwandile Sibanyoni did not manage to finish in 2011 nor in 2012. I hope he has better luck
this year.
Benzi Tenza will be taking part in his 9th Comrades this year. Benzi ran his best time of
07:18:48 in 2010. Benzi has a C Seeding.
Ben Truter will be taking part in his 17th Comrades this year. His best time is 08:14:02 set in
1996.
Brian Walstroom is taking part in his 5th Comrades this year, his best time is 07:53:02 which he
ran in 2011. Last year Brian did not start the race. Brian has a B Seeding.
Jannie Heath and pharmacist Vhonani Mudau will be running their 5th Comrades this year. Both
have a D seeding.
Gary Jackson unfortunately did not finish Comrades last year so he will be attempting to
complete his 6th Comrades. His first in Boksburg Athletic Club colours.
Shaun Jordaan will be attempting to finish his 1st Comrades this year. Shaun lined up in 2011
but unfortunately did not finish the race.
Derek van der Spuy will be taking part in his 15th Comrades. Derek has achieved 9 silvers.
Zacharia Mogotsi (B Seeding) and Abel Ngwenya (E Seeding) will also be taking part in their
15th Comrades Marathon.
Albert Khoza will be taking part in his 7th Comrades this year. What headgear will Albert wear
this year?
Adri Wepener will be taking part in her 11th Comrades this year and will run in her Perpetuity
number for the first time.
Carolyn Wridgway will be taking part in her 20th Comrades. Carolyn last ran in 2011. Her
fastest time was 07:54:34 in 1998.
Cosnath Zitha will be taking part in his 10th Comrades this year and will receive his Perpetuity
Number on race day from the Comrades Marathon Assocation. Cosnath has a B Seeding.
Cosnath ran his fastest time in 2009 when he finished in a time of 07:40:32.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR ROAD RUNNING CAPTAIN
When a runner decides to enter the Comrades marathon it is a commitment that has to be made
in some cases a year in advance.
It takes months of early mornings or late evenings pounding the pavement to get the mileage in,
sweating in the heat of summer and shivering in cold of winter.
It takes lending a sympathetic ear to your mate’s aches and pains, while being on the other side
and moaning about yours.
It takes early mornings to get to races, getting your entry in on time and getting that qualifying
time done.
All this is done to arrive at the start line in the best shape you can be, the work put in by the
athletes shows the respect and the love that they have for the race.
To all who have made the commitment for 2013, I salute you and wish you all the best of luck.
Enjoy the day out, feed off the crowd, visualise yourself crossing the finish line and probably
most important of all DON’T give up.
Although I am not running this year, I will be following each and every one of you from the
starting gun to the finish line, and I am already looking forward to hearing all your war stories.
