Introduction
• most powerful tool• Computerization on I. Rly started in late 60s • Many applications such as • Passenger Revenue • Goods Accounting• Financial management, • operational statistics etc.
Introduction
• VII th plan (1985-90) • third and fourth generations computer system
introduced• Computerisation was not only strengthened in
Zonal Rly and production units but also introduced in Divisions
• Many new areas such as PRS FOIs etc. were also initiated
nodal Directorate
• C& IS is a nodal Directorate for implementation of all projects on Indian Railways, such as
• Development of norms, standards, maintenance manuals etc.
• Preparation of IT plan for Indian Railways• Coordinating training effort in IT areas
Projects handled by C & IS Dte.
• Passenger Reservation system (PRS) including web enabling
• Freight operations information system (FOIS) including web enabling.
• Unreserved Ticketing system (UTS).• National Train Enquiry system (NTESW)
including web enabling.• Coaching Refund computerization.

• Season & Mobil Ticketing system computerization
• Parcel offices computerization• Data warehousing for PRS.• Claims office computerization• Workshop computerization.• Store computerization.• Hospital Management system etc.

• Poor Penetration of computerization • IRICEN’s Contribution is commendable• codes & manuals • technical books & reports• circulars • Drawings• in house program etc.
Track Management system
• Introduced in 26 divn of Rly during late 90s• Versatile computer software• Provides various management information
systems (MIS), to help in• Decision Making regarding maintenance and
up-gradation of track• It has got 21 modules
PROBLEM IN IMPLEMENTATION.
• Given to selected subdivisions, under the control of AEN only
• No connectivity of the AEN’s computer with that of the Division or Headquarter
• There was no compatibility of the output of TRC run
• Output of OMS is not available in soft format, which can directly be read by the software
PROBLEM IN IMPLEMENTATION.
• There was no connectivity between the AEN and the PWI unit
• There was a time lag ranging from few days few months between the date of inspection
• Training was also inadequate for implementation

• Formation of Task force• User friendly S/W• Proper infrasture• Compatibility• Training• Inspection schedule• Quality of inspection

Conclusion :
• urgent need of various management information systems
• Effective implementation
