Operating Systems
• Allow you to customize your machine, and make changes to it’s settings– Before operating systems, everything on the
system was hardwired, and could not change anything!
– Had to buy a completely new machine to add features
• An operating system controls the system resources of the computer.

Operating Systems
• Without an operating system, the computer is useless!– Check to see if you have an installation cd before
formatting your hard drive.• Now found on smaller devices
– Cell phones• Store photos• Play games• Organize dates
– Palm Pilots• Mini-Computer
– GPS• Track other people

Operating Systems
• Common Features of current operating systems– Clipboard
• Copy, Cut, Paste• Print Screen
– Drivers• Allows software to run correctly
– Registry• Tracks all changes made to the computer
– Control Panel• Many settings on the computer can be manipulated

Operating Systems
• There are many different types of Operating Systems– CLUI – Command Line User Interface– GUI – Graphic User Interface– Multi-User – Many users can use at the same
or at a different time– Multi-Processor – System can use multiple
processors simultaneously

Examples of Operating Systems
• MS-DOS – Command Line User Interface
• MacOS – (GUI)
• Linux – (GUI & CLUI)

MS-DOS
• Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System)– A command line user interface.
• MS-DOS 1.0 released in 1981 for IBM computers • Latest version of MS-DOS
– MS-DOS 6.22, released in 1994.
– MS-DOS is not commonly used by itself today, but still can be accessed from every version of Microsoft Windows.

Command Line Interface
• C:\> typical command line prompt
• Commands– {cd.. } {dir} {copy} {del} {c:}– C:\>dir tells you the contents of the
c: directory– C:\>cd windows Changes to the windows
directory– C:\windows>win.exe will run that executable

Operating Systems• Allow you to use images to navigate through
computer, and by the click of the mouse, information from the computer can be manipulated.
• Allows you to customize many settings of computer, especially the way that your computer looks, and runs.

GUI (Graphic User Interface)
Pro’s• Simplifies Interface• Don’t need to know
syntax• More Capabilities• Can run multiple
software programs simultaneously
Con’s• Cost !!!
– Developers– Artists– Programmers
• Bog’s down system resources

• An area of space reserved for temporary storage of information.
– Copy – cntl C– Cut – cntl X– Paste – cntl V– Print Screen – alt Prnt Scrn
• Can store images, text, or files until a new item is placed on the clipboard.
