WHAT IS BPMM?The Business Process Maturity Model (BPMM) was developed by the Object Management Group (OMG), a non profit international industry consortium. The model describes an evo-lutionary path that guides organisations in moving from immature, inconsistent processes to mature, disciplined processes. In following the BPMM improvement path, organisational behaviour and culture will change allowing the organisation to produce continually improv-ing business results.

HOW IMPORTANT IS BPMM?The Business Process Maturity Model was structured for these basic uses:

1. A guide for business process improvement initiatives

The BPMM is designed to guide improvement programs and this is the most frequent usage of the model.

5

2. Risk management system for developing and deploying enterprise applications.

The BPMM can be used to identify risks to the successful implementation of improve-ment systems and to provide guidance on the processes or activities to be done prior to the implementation of the change.

The BPMM can be used to identify risks to the successful implementation of improvement systems and to provide guidance on the processes or activities to be done prior to the im-plementation of the change.

4. Benchmarking

Organisations can evaluate and compare themselves where they are relative in terms of business process maturity in their industry segment. The appraisals involved in the BPMM can provide an approximate benchmark for the organisation.

The BPMM AssessmentWe are presenting a comprehensive checklist for you to be able to assess your department or your organisation’s business process maturity. Once you check all of the things per level, you may proceed and assess the next level. If you think some of the list are not yet done by your organisation, this means that you are working at this level of Business Process Maturity. A prepared action is written after each level for you to work on until you tick off everything and proceed to the next level.

9

Level 1: Initial

OBJECTIVE: There are no specific objectives. Success in these organisations depends on the competence and heroics of the peo-ple in the organisation and not on the use of proven processes.

Here are some things you need to check if you’re stuck in this level: The whole organisation is working without specific objectives. The success of the organisation is highly dependent on the employees’ com-

Ad hoc processes are present. You expect inconsistent outcomes. You understand that there are some reworking to be done. Is the activity/practice document-ed as per the business’s standard format? Is the document approved by the appropriate authority?

ACTION: The management should moti-vate people to overcome problems and get the job done.

Page 14: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature

10

Level 2: Managed

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to create a man-agement foundation within each work unit or project.

After passing Level 1, you might want to check Level 2 and see if the business pro-cesses now are more managed. Here are some things you need to assess:

You can see repeatable processes. Reworked is being reduced. You build satisfied commitments.

There is a creation of management foundation in every department or unit.

Does the documented process cover at least one of the intended loca-tions of the business? Does the documented process, deploy/practice at least some of the pro-cess steps or sub-processes?

ACTION: Build disciplined work unit man-agement to stabilised work and control commitments.

Page 15: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature

11

Level 3: Standardised

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to establish and use a common organisational process infrastructure and associated process as-sets to achieve consistency in how work is performed to provide the organisation’s products and services.

Have you checked everything in Level 2? Try assessing the Level 3 of BPMM where most of the processes are standardised.

You can see productivity growth in every employee and in the organisation as a whole. An effective automation is being implemented to make employees effi-cient. There’s an economy of scale. Is the process that is documented deployed/practiced fully, including all the process steps? Is the process that is documented deployed/practiced fully in all the intend-ed locations of the business?

Page 16: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature

12

Does the documented process necessitate cross-links with other processes and functions? If so, does it deploy such links in totality? Is the process linked to other intended processes or functions?

ACTION: Develop standard processes, measures, and training for product and service of-ferings.

Page 17: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature

13

Level 4: Predictable

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to manage and exploit the capability of the organisational process infrastructure and associated pro-cess assets to achieve predictable results with controlled variation.

You may be confident that your organisa-tion is beyond Level 3 because you’re here. Check out the list of Level 4! The business processes are stable.

Knowledge management is well-or-ganized.

You expect predictable results. Have goals been set to adhere to timelines, customer satisfaction, cost? Are there metrics for the measure-ment of the goal?

Can the process be automated? If so, is it automated and enabled by the software tool and documented accord-ingly?

ACTION: Manage process and results quantitatively and exploit the benefits of standardisation.

Page 18: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature

14

Level 5: Innovating

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to continuously improve the organisation’s processes and the resulting products and services through defect and problem prevention, continuous capability, and planned innovative improve-ments.

You are here which means your organisa-tion took a step forward from being pre-dictable. See how the innovative organisa-tions proceed to be at the last level of the BPMM

There are planned innovations for the future. There’s a changed management. The processes present in your sys-tem are capable of handling the planned innovations.

Is the measurement of the quality goals analyzed and improved upon on a regular basis?

Does the metric have a positive trend? And are there steps being taken on improving the trend?

Page 19: COMPREHENSIVE CHECKLIST FOR YOUR ORGANISATION’S BUSINESS …€¦ · Business Process Maturity Model serves as the map which guides organisations in their way to achieving mature
