Read the following letter carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Kublai Khan was the grandson of a great warrior, Genghis Khan. In 1279,

Kublai Khan conquered China and made himself emperor.

Although he was a Mongol, not a Chinese, he loved the Chinese way of life.

He invited painters to come and live at his palace so that he could see their art.

Great thinkers came to him, too, for he loved to talk about ideas. But Kublai Khan

did not just stay in his palace. He travelled all over China to find out how to make

life better for his people. During his rule, new roads, canals and cities were built so

people could travel easily and safely.

Kublai Khan was also curious about the life outside China and soon he got a

chance to find out more about Europe. A young man named Marco Polo came

from Italy to trade for silk and jewels. Macro Polo was astonished at Kublai Khan’s

riches. Kublai Khan let Marco Polo stay with him in China for 25 years. The men

learned about each other’s ways and when Marco Polo returned to Italy, he told

stories of the wise Chinese ruler.
