Why Kangaroos Have a Pouch

Kangaroo had a joey who always seemed to be getting lost. She had to watch him very carefully in case there was any danger.

One day, a wombat came walking slowly towards Kangaroo. Wombat was old and blind. He felt that he was of no use to anybody and that nobody cared about him. He could not even find fresh grass to eat.

Kangaroo felt sorry for Wombat so she asked him to hold on to her tail so that she could lead him to some fresh grass and some cool water. Wombat ate and drank. Suddenly, Kangaroo remembered her joey so she hurried back to where she had left him.

Her joey had become lost again but she found him fast asleep in the shade of a gum tree. Kangaroo did not disturb her joey. She raced back to see if Wombat was all right.

When she got there, an Aboriginal hunter was ready to kill Wombat. Kangaroo made loud noises so that the hunter would chase her. The hunter did so, but she could not catch Kangaroo.

Kangaroo then raced back to check on her joey. On finding that he was safe, they both went back to the patch of grass. Wombat had gone.

Wombat was really Byamee, the great father of all who had come from the sky to find out which creature was the kindest of all. Byamee rewarded Kangaroo by having a spirit friend make a dillybag for her. When the spirit friend gave Kangaroo the dillybag, Byamee used his magic to make it grow on her body. Kangaroo’s joey would always be safe in his mother’s pouch from then on.
