Prefects play an important role in schools today. They are usually

responsible, diligent and have initiative. They help the school function better in a

number of ways.

A prefect is chosen because he or she has leadership qualities and is well-

disciplined. This means he or she can help to instill discipline in the rest of the

students. A prefect has to make sure that students who arrive late are reported to

the disciplinary master. He or she should be fair and unbiased. His or her friends

should not be treated more leniently than other students.

Besides their disciplinary duties, prefects also perform duties like welcoming

visitors and coordinating programmes during special school events, such as Sports

Day.

Prefects also act as a link between students and teachers. Certain

messages can be conveyed better to the students through the prefects. Students

who feel unhappy about unreasonable school rules can also voice their opinion to

the teachers through the prefects.

Hence, prefects have a lot of duties to perform but their responsibilities

make them better students. Being prefects allows them to gain experience in
