Are you now able to….
I still feel unsure. I need some more help to understand.
I feel ok. I need to do some more work on my own to check my understanding.
I am happy and feel I understand and can explain the main points.

Use Properties to Determine the Identity
of a Compound
In order for a compound to form, the elements must REACT and undergo a chemical change.
Once they combine, they have different properties because they are a totally different substance.
Keywords: specific ratios

of a Compound
When elements combine, they combine in specific ratios
Ex: Water: 2 atoms of Hydrogen (1 g each) will combine with one atom of Oxygen (16g)
Mass Ratio of Water 2:16 or 1:8 when reducedMass ratio never changes!!

Use Properties to Determine the Identity
of a Compound
Compounds have their own physical properties just like elements do.
Ex: Melting points, boiling points, etc
Compounds can also be identified by chemical properties.Ex: React with acids, react with water, react with light, etc.
Keywords: Chemical Means

• Compounds can be broken down.
• Some compounds can be broken into the elements that make them up.
• This can only be done by chemical means.Ex: Heating, electricity

of a Compound
• Compounds cannot be broken down by physical means.Ex: You can not filter water to get H and O
You can not ground salt to get Na and Cl
