KEY TO STUDENT RECORDS

GENERAL INFORMATION

The normal academic year consists of two semesters of approximately 16 weeks each including examination periods.

The unit of credit is the semester course. This is defined as one-fourth of a normal program of academic work for one semester (four courses) and, for purposes of evaluation, may be considered the equivalent of four semester hours of credit.

Course Type reflected in “Other Credit Accepted by the Institution” J = Study Abroad T = Transfer Credit V = Advanced Placement X = Exchange Credit

Year Long Courses: The symbol ‘*’ indicates a course in progress for which the first semester temporary grade is not recorded. The numerical equivalents earned by the temporary first semester grade do not appear in the semester or cumulative averages.

Repeated Courses: The grade received for a repeated course is calculated in the student’s cumulative average. The credit for a repeated course may or may not be counted. Repeated courses are designated in the column labeled ‘R’ as: I = credit included in credits earned and GPA calculation A = credit included in GPA calculation but NOT credits earned

Physical Education: Courses are graded CR (Credit) or NC (No Credit). A student must pass Physical Education courses equal to 2.0 credits. These courses are NOT reflected in the semester or total credits earned. Effective with the Class of 2007, Physical Education is no longer required for graduation.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

32 semester courses.

Effective with the Class of 1999, a 4-year average of C (2.00 on the 4.00 scale) is required for graduation. Preceding Class of 1999, a 4-year average of C- (1.67 on the 4.00 scale) was required.

Each student must complete a major concentration; minor concentrations are optional.

Students in the Class of 1978 through the Class of 1990 were required to fulfill the Senior Major Proficiency Evaluation (SMPE), according to the requirements determined by their major departments. An ‘H’ will indicate work of distinctively high quality.

Students admitted to the WHEATON SCHOLAR PROGRAM prior to 1994 may carry fewer courses than the normal load and engage in graded (designated by WS) or ungraded tutorials. Individual evaluations may be affixed to the transcript.

GRADING SYSTEM

*Beginning with the Class of 1973 through the fall 2000 semester, A+ = 4.33.

Honors / Pass / Fail: Honors (H) = work of excellent quality Pass (P) = work at least equivalent to C (prior to the Class of 1999 P = C-) Fail (F) = failure

Courses receiving grades of Honors (H) or Pass (P) are not calculated as part of the student average.

Beginning in the spring of 1977, the following symbols were adopted:

AU Successful audit - no academic credit WD Official course withdrawal WF Computed as F. Withdrawal from a course after the final date allowed for dropping a course without penalty. I Incomplete NG Instructor has not submitted a grade by the deadline or submitted an unauthorized grade of incomplete

ACCREDITATION

Wheaton College is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
