PaintingPAINTING: INTRODUCTION I gives students an understanding of the basic elements of painting such as shape, space and composition, as well as how to develop a full colour palette and create effective brushwork. There is also a focus on the material qualities of paint including mixing and application to surfaces. Students can use acrylic or oils. PAINTING: INTRODUCTION II builds on a basic knowledge of paint handling and colour and presents students with a range of projects that explore possible approaches to painting in terms of subject matter, style and technique. PAINTING: IDEA TO REALIZATION focuses on the process of working from an idea to a finished painting. Students start with notes and sketches and other source material such as photographs or previous work, and learn methods to transform their initial ideas into a meaningful painting. Students develop a few paintings throughout the course with the last session being an in-depth critique of the process. Prerequisite: Painting: Introduction I & II or previous painting experience. PAINTING: NATURE AS SOURCE allows students to build upon their painting skills and vocabulary with a focus on composition, colour synthesis, surface and format. Nature as subject matter provides a range of assignments that encourage individual approaches to imagery and process. Prerequisite: Painting: Introduction I and II although students with previous painting experience can participate with permission of the Director. PAINTING TODAY II is a continuation of Painting Today I with a thematic approach to the hands-on study of painting. Topics include landscape, history painting and still life. Class exercises and projects are supplemented with visual presentations on historical and contemporary artists working within the specified themes. PAINTING: ADVANCED II is the second part of Advanced Painting I where students continue work on the series started in the previous semester and hone in on specific elements. The work in this semester is to be considered for the student’s final Graduation Exhibition, so students are thinking towards developing a complete “body of work”. PhotographyPHOTOGRAPHY II is intermediate level class is taught with the premise that students have an understanding of the basics for photography including: exposure, depth of field and basic postproduction skills. These techniques are further developed with a focus on history, theory and artistic concepts and strategies used in contemporary photography. The first half of the course introduces students to a variety of themes address by contemporary photographers and for the second half, students concentrate on developing a body of work based on a theme of their own choosing. Students will leave course with a body of work that they can use to submit to galleries for exhibitions. Mixed Media, SculptureSCULPTURE: IDEAS AND PROCESS is a studio-based course that investigates contemporary concerns involved in making sculpture. The course emphasizes the development of meaning in sculpture and covers themes such as the body, architecture, memory and cultural diversity. Students are also taught the importance of concepts such as scale, space, accumulation, placement, and presentation of finished work. Prerequisite: Sculpture: Introduction to Materials or previous sculpture experience.Tuesdays 10am - 1pm, Jan 12 - Apr 5, 2016 Ebony Rose Tuition: $395.00 (36 hrs)

FABRIC SCULPTURE uses the familiar medium of fabric as a focus for three-dimensional form. Students explore the work of Claes Oldenburg, Luanne Martineau, Anne Hamilton and Polly Apfelbaum. Projects will include soft sculpture, and ‘drulptures’ (a word coined by Martineau to describe her felt assemblages). This course analyzes how each mode of working changes the visual experience and conceptual meaning behind the work. Demonstrations of how to use materials, interfaces and armatures that can give form to fabric, are part of the course. LAND AND ENVIRONMENTAL ART began as a movement in the late 1960s and in its early phases, was most associated with sculpture, having arisen out of mounting criticism of traditional sculptural forms and practices that were increasingly seen as outmoded, and potentially out of harmony with the natural environment. The process of photographic documentation for record-keeping and exhibition purposes is an important component of this course. The ultimate aim of this course is to expand students’ vocabulary and working methodologies towards an increased engagement with their surrounding topography as a site for art making. THE ALTERED IMAGE: PHOTO-BASED MIXED MEDIA gives students the experience of traditional darkroom printing, including experimental approaches to image-making such as print distressing, cliché-verre (hand-made painterly negatives), and photo-montaged paper negatives and positives. In addition, techniques such as collage (with original and found images), image painting and colouring, as well as mark making are covered. Course projects are supplemented with examples of historical and contemporary artists who work with altered photographic images.Fridays 10am - 1pm, Jan 15 - Apr 8, 2016 Tony Bounsall Tuition: $395.00 (36 hrs)

Art History, TheoryART HISTORY: DADA TO POP 1915-1965 uses the Dada movement as a point of departure with this course following Western visual art from the early to mid-20th century and the Pop Art of the 1960s. Students become familiar with leading movements such as Surrealism, New Objectivity, Abstract Expressionism, Neo Dada and Pop. Discussions focus on the ideas, materials, and social and political contexts of artists who made up these movements. Class formats include image-based lectures, discussion and readings.Thursdays 6pm - 9pm, Jan 14 - Apr 7, 2016 Catherine Nutting Tuition: $395.00 (36 hrs)

ART HISTORY: EMILY CARR AND THE GROUP OF SEVEN are icons of Canadian art, and are among our nation’s most outstanding painters of the 20th century. The course looks at the life and works of these prominent artists, both individually and collectively, and examines the growth and change of each artist with attention to the artistic and social background that provides the context for their work.Tuesdays 10am - 1pm, Jan 12 - Apr 5, 2016 Kerry Mason Tuition: $395.00 (36 hrs) CRITICAL STUDIES II provides students with the opportunity to engage in a conceptual and philosophical discourse surrounding visual culture, and how it pertains to contemporary art. Image-based lectures, readings, field trips and discussions introduce students to a more thorough understanding of the art world and the economic and social forces that shape visual art today. While looking at art is a fundamental part of this course, students are also challenged to develop a broader understanding of the way contemporary artwork relates to language, history and politics. It is not necessary to have done Critical Studies I to take this course.Wednesdays 2pm - 5pm, Jan 13 - Apr 6, 2016 Wendy Welch Tuition: $395.00 (36 hrs) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT introduces students to the basics of preparing professional artists materials such as an artist statement and images of their work, as well as how to make a website using a Wordpress template. Students also work on producing a group or solo printed catalog that includes a written essay. Prerequisite: registered in the final semester of the Diploma of Fine Arts or Independent Studies Program. However those holding a diploma or degree from another arts program, and with previous experience as a practicing artist, would be considered for this course with permission of the Director. COLLAGE COMPOSITION involves using simple materials and tools such ascoloured and patterned papers, scissors and glue. These are all you need to create exciting and vibrant compositions. Working with a “paper palette” of colours and patterns is the most immediate way to arrange various elements on a picture plane. Basic principles of design and how to implement them in collage compositions will be covered. This workshop is perfect for you if you are looking for new ways to approach the design of your work, or if you want an easy, stress-free way to do something creative. PAPER PLATE LITHOGRAPHY uses standard black-and-white photocopies as a printing plate. By creating an oil-based lithographic surface, students can reproduce and make prints of drawings or photographic images onto printmaking paper. Great for use in card making, art journalling, collage and as a base for encaustics. Printing can be done either by press or by hand burnishing. MONOTYPES WITH ACRYLIC is a two-day workshop where you will learn how to make painterly monotype prints using open acrylic paints that clean up easily with soap and water. EGG TEMPERA is a beautiful, versatile and vibrant medium, and was used extensively in Europe for hundreds of years before it was all but forgotten during the Renaissance. You will learn how to make your own egg emulsion and combine it with pigment to make egg tempera paint right in your own kitchen! Historic methods and contemporary applications will be discussed. DRAWING: CREATING MARKS THROUGH ACTIONS focuses on unconventional ways of creating marks on paper using traditional tools such as pen, ink and graphite, as well as more unconventional ones such as an awl, smoke, needle, thread, hammer and nail. GUM BICHROMATE PRINTING will teach you how to make intriguing prints from your photographs and/or hand-drawn imagery with photo-sensitized water-based paints on watercolour paper. OIL BASICS explores the enormous potential of oil paint. Oil paint is a slow-drying and very forgiving medium, ideal for beginners because you can redo any brushstroke. Smelly solvents are a thing of the past: we will explore non-toxic methods for thinning paint and cleaning brushes. The focus will be on creating the lush, textured mark making, rich colour, and subtle effects that only oil paint can achieve. PAPER CUTTING: CREATING A NARRATIVE will introduce students to the process of developing an original narrative by borrowing from several sources. Source material will be culled from children’s book illustrations, which will be traced and combined to create an inventive and lively composition. COLLAGE YOUR WAY OUT OF A CREATIVE BLOCK will show you how cutting, pasting and making something entirely new from existing bits and pieces can be a fantastic way to free yourself, especially if you are feeling stuck. In this workshop, we’ll spend the morning doing quick creativity jump-starting collage projects. Fast, fun, simple ways to get out of your head and onto the paper! In the afternoon, we’ll take everything we learned in the morning and get to work on another piece. Note: Danielle Kyrsa, aka “The Jealous Curator” will also be giving a talk the evening before. WATERCOLOUR PLAY is a great way to get started with watercolour painting. This afternoon workshop introduces you to working with watercolour through two simple exercises for building up a composition as you go. MAKE YOUR OWN COLOURING BOOK provides a way for you to make your own personal designs for a one-of-kind adult colouring book for your own colouring pleasure or to give as gifts to friends or family. You will learn how to make a range of repetitive patterns based on natural and geometric forms.
