1 First, keep calm! ● Perhaps you feel a little nervous?

● Try taking ten slow breaths before you go into the exam room.

● Then say to yourself: I am calm and in control. I can do this.

2 Keep an eye on the clock● You need to use your time well in the exam.● Some questions may be longer than others, with more marks.● Work out roughly how long you can spend on each question.● Allow a little time for a final check too.● Then keep an eye on the clock.

3 Read the question carefully!● You will get NO marks for a great answer to the wrong question!

● So take time to read the question carefully. This will save you time in the end.

● Note the instruction. Does it say Describe? Or List? Or Explain?

4 Pay attention to the marks● The mark for a question part tells you what the examiner expects. ● [1] shows that the examiner expects a short answer with one key point.● [2] means you are expected to give two different key points.● You will gain no extra marks for extra information – and you will lose time.

6 About calculations● For calculations, it is a good idea to show your working. ● Don’t forget to give the correct units. Wrong units lose marks.● For example, if you have to work out a rate of energy transfer, you must give the unit of joules per second or watts.
