LET’S READ…

Music and my family by Ben Cohen

We all love music in my family, but that’s because we’re from New Orleans. New

Orleans is famous for its great music.

My grandma was a musician in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She plays

the piano beautifully. She always listens to classical music and she listens to opera,

too. I think opera is terrible! Some classical music is OK. I sometimes listen to it when

I’m doing my homework, because it helps me to work well.

My mum always listens to pop music at home. She loves old pop songs by Madonna

and Kylie Minogue. Mum goes to the gym three times a week and she takes an MP3

player with her. She doesn’t listen to pop music at the gym. She listens to old rock

bands like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi. She thinks they help her to run quickly!

My brother Aaron is seventeen and he plays the electric guitar really well. Aaron plays

the guitarin a school rock band. The band’s name is The Stone Monkeys. He’s also

learning to play the electric violin. He’s practising all the time at the moment, but he

isn’t very good. There’s one goodthing about the electric violin – you can turn off the

speakers and play it quietly!

My sister Kelly is thirteen. She doesn’t play an instrument, but she’s crazy about

music. When her friends visit, they sit in her room and listen to her CDs. She spends

all of her pocket money on music. She also buys a lot of songs on the Internet. At the

moment her favourite singers are Duffy and Leona Lewis.

My dad is crazy about jazz. There are lots of jazz concerts in New Orleans. In fact,

New Orleans is famous for jazz. All the tourists go to the jazz clubs on Bourbon Street.

My dad’s got a very big collection of jazz CDs and the autographs of some famous

musicians. Last year we were in New York for Christmas. Dad’s favourite jazz musician

was at the Cotton Club – a famous jazz club in Harlem. Dad had a fantastic night, but

we were all bored after fifteen minutes.

And what about me? I’m fourteen years old and I like a lot of different bands. I like

Busted and McFly. I also like rap singers like Ray J and Kayne West, but they’re not

my favourite singers. At the moment I’m doing my homework and listening to my

favourite band, The Kings of Leon. I think they’re incredible!

Chicago is full of great restaurants, but what do people in

Chicago eat at home? We asked two young people to tell us.

I always eat a big breakfast before I go to

school. I usually eat eggs, cornflakes or

toast, but sometimes I have tyropita.

Tyropita is a traditional Greek breakfast. It’s

a pie with cheese and eggs. Greek people

usually drink coffee for breakfast, but I don’t

like coffee. I always have milk.

I always have lunch at school. Lunch at our

school cafeteria is horrible! But it’s OK,

because Mum makes me sandwiches. Some

of my friends eat a lot of crisps and sweets

as snacks at school, but I always eat fruit. I

usually take two apples to school with me

and some grapes or a few plums.

Today is Wednesday and I finish school late,

because I play rugby. I’m always hungry on

Wednesday evenings! Tonight my mum is

making yemista. It’s my favourite Greek

food. Mum and Dad are vegetarians, so

Mum makes it from red peppers, courgettes

and aubergines. My grandma also makes

yemista, but with meat. It’s delicious, but

don’t tell my mum!

Spiros Georgiakis, 12

I don’t eat breakfast at home because I

get up late, but my mum gives me a baozi

to eat on the school bus. A baozi is bread

with meat or vegetables inside it. Chinese

people cook the bread with steam, and it’s

really nice. My mum usually makes baozi

with chicken or mushrooms.

A lot of my Chinese friends bring Chinese

food to school, but I don’t. I really like the

school food and I always eat lunch in the

cafeteria. The burgers and pasta are great!

Sometimes they make Chinese food, too.

In the evening my dad cooks dinner. Mum

doesn’t have dinner with us, because she

finishes work very late. Dad is a great cook

and my favourite meal is Cantonese meat

cake. He makes it with pork and lettuce.

When Mum comes home she sometimes

gives us chocolate cake and a little milk. In

China, people don’t eat a lot of cake. But

we’re different – we’re Chinese Americans.
