Built in 1947, Villa Royale emerged in Palm Springs during a period of Post-

World War II development in the Coachella Valley. Adding a small pool of

guestrooms to the south end of Palm Springs alongside the Deep Well Guest

Ranch and Smoke Tree Ranch, Villa Royale was heralded as one of the earliest

small hotels in south Palm Springs.

Owned and managed by a woman by the name of Evelyn Pell, family lore has

it that the California ranch-style hotel took its name from the first initials of

Evelyn’s children – Valorie and Richard.

HISTORY

As tourism boomed following post-war development, Villa Royale joined the

host of hotels frequented by Hollywood celebrities as screenwriters, actors,

actresses and industry stars descended upon the Palm Deser t oasis that met the

“Two-Hour Rule” imposed by Hollywood studios – one that stipulated actors and

actresses under contract could venture no fur ther than two-hours from set.

Frequented by Hollywood stars the likes of Mickey Rooney and prominent

screenwriter Irving Shulman, the man credited with writing “Rebel Without a

Cause”, Villa Royale’s colorful heritage is carried on today under the bright, bold

design of a 38-villa hideaway that calls to today’s class of creative spirits.

ART COLLECTION

Villa Royale is home to an original, commissioned collection of more than

50 large format oil paintings, which were painted on site in the year prior to

the hotel’s opening by Juan Casas, Lou Kregal and Sara Radovanovich. These

ar tists lived and painted at the proper ty for weeks at a time, separately and

together, channeling the history and vibe of Palm Springs in their eclectic

body of works featuring deser t landscapes, classic cars and icons of popular

culture, film and music.

Spanish ar tist and poet Juan Casas, primarily based in Por tland, Ore.,

created works that include a por trait of Dennis Hopper from “Apocalypse

Now,” one of Debbie Harry from Blondie and a por trait of Charles Bronson

from “How the West Was Won.” Lou Kregal, an Athens, GA based ar tist,

created geometric surfboard and diamond patterned works for Villa Royale’s

guestrooms. Los Angeles based Sara Radovanovitch created a por trait of Lana

Turner from a 1944 publicity photo of the actress, and another of Clark Gable,

also from the 1940s, smoking a pipe.

Along many lush pathways, guests will also find vibrant murals adorning the

walls of the grounds at Villa Royale. Sagent Staygold, a Los Angeles-based

tattoo ar tist and muralist, created “Welcome to Your Paradise,” a graphic,

bold work in spray paint that greets visitors as they enter Villa Royale.

Throughout the grounds, Radovanovich painted a series of colorful geometric

murals throughout the proper ty inspired by razzle dazzle, the complex

patterns of geometric shapes interrupting and intersecting each other, which

were used by the Navy during World War I as camouflage to make it difficult to

estimate a battleship’s range, speed, and heading.

In addition to inspiring Radovanovich, razzle dazzle attracted the notice

of ar tists such as Pablo Picasso, who claimed that Cubists like himself had

invented it. At Villa Royale, Radovanovich also created “El Viaje” – Spanish for

the journey – a work inspired by the sirens call of jet age travel that adorns

the sitting area of the poolside lanai.

RULES & HOUSE POLICIES

• We are an ADULTS only proper ty - no one under the age of 21 is allowed.

• Villa Royale is a non-smoking proper ty. A $500 cleaning fee will be assessed to guests who smoke in rooms & patios.

• Our one bedroom & studio villas are able to accommodate a maximum of 2 guests. Our two bedroom villas can accommodate a maximum of 4 guests.

• Lost key replacement fee = $30.

• Speak softly after 10pm. We are an intimate proper ty, please be respectful of other guests.

• Villa Royale is located in a residential neighborhood with noise restrictions from 10pm - 7am.

• Professional photo shoots must be approved by management.

• All food delivery services must check in with the front desk upon arrival.

• If our guest robes are not found in your room upon checkout your folio will be charged.

• Pet fee is $100. Each additional dog is $50.

• Dogs are allowed - please do not leave pets in your room unattended for lengthy times. Please ask our front desk and we will recommend a pet sitter.

• Guests who bring dogs into a non-friendly pet room are subject to a $250 cleaning fee.

• Pets must be on leashes at all times.

• Maximum of two dogs per pet friendly room.

POOL RULES

• Pools close at midnight.

• No diving.

• No music other than hotel music allowed.

• No inflatables in the pools.

• No glassware in the pool area.

• Saving space in the cabana or loungers is prohibited.

• No dogs allowed near the pool.

• No dogs allowed on outside furniture.

• No cell phone conversations.

Do you allow pets?

We allow dogs under 75lbs with a limit of two dogs per room.

We charge a cleaning fee of $50 per stay. Dogs must be on a

leash at all times and are not allowed near the pools.

Housed inside stucco walls accented with original, large format oil paintings

produced by Juan Casas, Villa Royale’s intimate bar and eatery, Del Rey, offers

up a twelve-seat oak and marble bar, tufted vinyl booths and an outdoor patio

equipped with a firepit for long nights under the deser t moonlight.

Inspired by Spanish and Mediterranean flavors, Del Rey’s playful menu

is served in a small plate format akin to taperías that flourish near the

Mediterranean Sea. Del Rey’s tapas-style fare, European-leaning wine program

and classic poolside cocktails mirrors Villa Royale’s communal spirit, inviting

guests to connect over the age-old custom of gathering around a table,

celebrating good flavors in the company of good people.
