It has been another fantastic week at Clifton this week. I am writing this introduction to the newsletter from Mount Cook Adventure Centre in the Peak District, where the Year 3 children are on their residential visit. The weather has been glorious and we have all rock climbed, abseiled, built buggies, completed the leap of faith, started fires using flint, built dens, orienteered, had water fights and have had loads of fun. The children have been fabulous, giving anything a go and displaying our learning superpowers and school values in abundance. My sincere thanks to the staff who have accompanied the trip, Mrs Clarke, Ms Platts, Mrs Morrison, Miss Eaton and Ms Collins for organising the trip. On Tuesday 2S performed their assembly. They presented iMovies they had created, and spoke about the work they had completed during the term on their theme 'Living on an Island'. They also performed a great song called ’I Am The Earth’ in two parts. The assembly was excellent and my huge thanks to the children, Mrs Spencer, Mrs Franey, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Hayden for their work in preparing the children. At the end of assembly the parents in Year 2 presented a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Mrs Spencer as it was her last class assembly.

In the afternoon we had an informal music concert in the Rayson Room. We enjoyed performances from the choir, ukulele group, our school band (the Toe Tappers) and individual performances from children who played the piano, guitar, violin, recorder, clarinet and even bassoon. The length of the performance was testimony to the enjoyment the children have for music at Clifton. So many of the children wanted to and had the confidence to perform in the concert which was fabulous. My thanks to Mrs Hayden for her stunning work in this important area of school. The quality, creativity and enjoyment the children possess for music really is a credit to her. Thank you to Mrs Haley, Mrs Headlam-Morley and Mrs Spencer who were also instrumental in making this concert happen.

I can't quite believe it's half term already. It has been an excellent first half of term, and there is so much more to look forward to after half term that I am not sure how we are going to pack it all in! There will be beatbox workshops, a visit from Curtis Jobling (creator of Bob the Builder), The Final of Clifton's got Talent, trips to London, Bridlington and the Theatre Royal, Sports Day, International Day, transition days and the End of Year Review and Celebration. Phew! My thanks once again to the wonderful staff team at Clifton for all they do to ensure your children have such brilliant experiences at school. I hope you all have a lovely, relaxing half term. 2H have been learning about adverbs

this week. We have learnt that ‘an

adverb gives information to a

verb…’- ask a 2H child to say that to

you! Here we are, sitting in 2H.

Sitting is a VERB, so we have added

an adverb each time. Can you tell

which is sitting quietly, sitting noisily

and sitting thoughtfully?

Mrs Hall is particularly keen on the

sitting thoughtfully photo!

Leavers’ 2017 Library Donations

Thank you for all the donations so far received, we have been extremely touched by your generosity.

Indeed, an order has been able to be placed already so that (hopefully) they can be on display at the beginning of next term.

Nursery have been travelling far and wide this week.

On Friday Sophiya and her mummy told all the children

about Pakistan as part of our trip around the world!

Sophiya and her mummy showed us their beautiful sparkly

clothes and colourful ‘jingly jangly’ bangles which the

children got to try on. The bangles are Sophiya’s

favourite! We saw lots of pictures of Pakistan and

listened to some music which Sophiya danced to.

Sophiya’s mummy had even cooked us some delicious

food to try, including spicy samosas and sticky sweet rice.

Thank you so much to Sophiya and her mummy.

We also had a surprise visit from some new teachers…

1J! They came across to Nursery to share their learning

about Australia and the Nursery children were fascinated

to find out about the deadly 60. 1J were brilliant

teachers, each talking about a different animal whilst using

the whiteboard and a pointer! They also sang Waltzing

Matilda and Kookaburra before splitting into groups to

show the Nursery children how to use an atlas on the

iPad to find Australia. Thank you 1J, we were all so

impressed and we think that you would all make great

teachers.

Last week Year 3 held a charity bake sale to raise money for GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital). In 1929 J M Barrie gave all the rights to Peter Pan to the hospital. Since then the hospital has received royalties every time a production of the play is put on, as well as from the sale of Peter Pan books and other products. Barrie requested that the amount raised from Peter Pan should never be revealed, and the hospital has always honoured his wishes. The Year 3 children did an incredible job of baking lots of fairy cakes and biscuits as well as decorating them and the classroom. A big thank you to all the children and parents for sending in money for the bake sale. We really hope you enjoyed the cakes! We have collected all the money together and we are very proud to announce we have raised £133.96 for GOSH

charity. Thank you for all your support!

1M have had another busy

week exploring in Japan! We

were lucky to have our expert

tour guide (Arthur from Year

2) with us on Wednesday to

talk about school in Japan,

their culture, and ways of life.

In the afternoon we took a

trip to the oriental

supermarket where we saw

live Turbots and Lobsters as well

as a variety of Japanese delicacies! We kept within

our budget and bought things to bring back for our Japanese party. We

celebrated the end of our trip by coming to school in Japanese dress, making

crafts, and eventually sampling our bought goods (some tastier than others!).

We are looking forward to seeing which country we will be sent to next!

Today the

children decorated beautiful big

butterflies and then we attached them

to a big stick to help them

fly. There were some lovely colourful designs on the

butterflies which looked fabulous.

Music Concert

Wow what a lot of talented musicians we have at Clifton! On Tuesday afternoon the children delighted parents and

friends with their singing, violin and ukulele playing, recorder

skills and lots of fabulous solos on a variety of instruments, including a mini bassoon! The Clifton Toe Tappers also made their

first public appearance playing “Two at Twilight”. May I take this opportunity to not only thank the children for all the hard work they

put in through the course of the year, but also to thank the parents.

Learning an instrument takes a lot of dedication and I really do appreciate the fabulous support the children get at home.

As we look forward to the second half of term, I will be inviting our visiting music teachers in to perform for our children. Hopefully this will help any

children who are thinking about taking up a new instrument in September to decide the best one for them. The forms for requesting music lessons

will be available in reception. There is no need to fill in a new form if

your child is continuing with their instrumental lessons at Clifton. If your child is moving onto St Olave’s, there will be a new set of forms for you

to fill in when you receive your information pack next half term.

Please note, any notice for lessons at Clifton must be received at

the beginning of next half term, this does not apply to

current Year 3 children where no notice is required.

Music lessons available at Clifton:

Year 1 - recorder - taught where possibly in pairs. (An individual lesson may be offered but would be for 15mins instead

of 30mins)

Year 2 - recorder, violin, guitar and piano - 30min individual

lesson

Year 3 - clarinet, flute, brass, recorder, violin, guitar and piano - 30 min individual lesson

This week RS have been learning about narrative.

The children have been using speech bubbles to

write about our Clifton’s Got Talent auditions. Not

only were the auditions terrific, but the writing

was terrific also! As well as the writing speech

bubbles, the children prepared posters to

advertise the event and filled in Clifton’s Got

Talent entry forms. Well done everyone!

This week in RL we said goodbye to our fabulous helper Georgina Sewell. She has been working with us over the last half term and has become very popular in our class! To say goodbye the children made lists of what they wanted to prepare for a party. We pumped up and decorated balloons, sorted our party snacks and then headed down to the cool forest school for a campout picnic party! The children helped

set up tents and had great fun!

If you go down to Newby Hall you will be in for a big surprise! Come along with all your family and have fun!

We will be meeting in the picnic area at Newby Hall, you will not need to pay admission to Newby Hall to gain access to the picnic area!

Don’t forget your teddy bear and picnic! If anyone has a gazebo can you please bring it with you in case we need shelter from the sun or rain!!

There will be a prize for the best dressed teddy by year groups and lots of other games for the whole family to enjoy!

CSF Summer Fair – Tuesday 27th June 2017 (following Sports Day)

Our annual Summer Fair promises to be lots of fun this year there will be the usual favourites including the Bouncy Obstacle Course, Welly Throwing, Hook a Duck, Beauty Parlour along with a couple of new ideas for this year! A great fun afternoon which the children love, it couldn’t happen without the help of all our volunteers so look out for communication via your year representative in the next few weeks putting out the call for help and resources to ensure the day is a great success.

During the Summer Fair we will be holding a pop up café please join us for tea, coffee, home made lemonade and other delicious goodies all proceeds to Clifton School Friends.

To all those budding bakers who wowed us with their talents in our Clifton Bake Off competition here’s another opportunity to get baking, we need biscuits, buns and cakes (ALL NUT FREE) for our pop up café, just drop them off in reception on the morning of Tuesday 27th June.
