The Queens Badge Presentation Ceremony for 2016 took place at the Linacre Mission, Litherland by kind invitation of the Liverpool Battalion. Some 26 members were presented with their badges and certificates by Dame Lorna Muirhead DBE. The devotions were lead by Nicola Langton-Miller Chaplain 48th Liverpool Company (Linacre Mission). At the conclusion of the ceremony 130 parents and friends were entertained to a buffet meal by joint invitation of the District and Battalion Executives. ObituariesJOHN HOBSON (age 70)John joined the 1st Bryn Company (StPetersParishChurch)asa thirteenyearoldandserved through the rankseventually becoming the CompanyCaptain,apositionheheldfrom1986to1998. He was also Battalion Treasurerforashortperiod.Acommittedmemberof his Church choir from boyhooduntil his passing. In both BB and thechoir,hewasgreatlysupportedbythemembership of his wife Kathleen andsons Adrian and Simon, to whom weextendourdeepestsympathy.

BRIAN PERRY (age 83)After service as a boy in the 6th Wigan (St Stephen’s Parish Church)he became Captain of the 5th WiganCompany(StCatharine’sParishChurch)from 1960 to 2000. A committedChristian and dedicated Church man,he faithfully served St Catharine’s asChurch Warden for many years whichwasdulyrecognisedwhenhereceivedthe Royal Maundy Money from H.MQueenat LiverpoolCathedral in 2004.He was the generous contributor ofall the furniture for the bedrooms inCentenaryHall.He leavesawifeVera,daughtersDavinaandAlysontowhomweextendourdeepestsympathy.

The 1st Elworth.....is part of the outreach of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. Thisyeartheyarecelebrating40yearsofserviceto the village/suburb of Sandbach.The company operating with threesections have always offered a variedprogramme of activity, the highlightsbeing theCompanydisplay andcamp.TheycontributegreatlytothelifeofEastCheshireBattalionandtoDistricteventsalthoughtheyarelocatedfurthestsouthintheDistrict.

Recentlytheyhaveexperiencedadeclinein numbers particularly in the youngeragegroups,soCaptainBarryEllershawdeveloped a working relationship withAlice Smith of Cheshire Youth United,who facilitated a very professionalrecruitment campaign which includedvisits to assemblies at local schools,printed matter of flyers, posters forsupermarkets, libraries and localgovernmentoffices.Thehighlightbeingan excellent interview on Radio RedShift,alocalradioservingEastCheshire.Resultsarebeingcarefullymonitoredbuteveryindicationisthatintensivepublicitybrings children to specially organisedtastersessionsoveraperiodof3weeks.

Roy Cartwright, died suddenly and unexpectedly inJanuary2015,age76,fromaCardiacarrestwhileathomehaving his breakfast, leaving his family devastated and incompleteshock.RoywasalifelongmemberofStPhilemon’sChurch,amemberofthe9thLiverpoolCompany,servedontheLiverpoolBattalionExecutiveandwasaDrilladjutant.

The family have now purchased 13 defibrillators inmemoryofRoy.OnSaturday5thMarchRoy’ssonAlan(anofficer in the 46th Liverpool St Michael in the Hamlet) anddaughter Naida visited the Training Centre to present twodefibrillatorsandthesewillbestrategicallyplacedatpointsinthecentre.TheywereaccompaniedbyMarkKingrepresentingThe Foundation who gave a talk on the Foundation andwas presented with a Cheque for £700 by Miss MargaretHeywoodChairmanoftheCentreManagementCommittee.Thenfollowedatrainingsessionfor12DistrictOfficersbyOKFoundationTrainingOfficer.

39 members from seven Companies took part in theJuniorSectionsCompetitionsDayheldattheDistrictActivityCentreonSaturday12thMarch2016.

TheBrigadePresidentLordGriffithsofBurryPort,hasbeenpleasedtoawarda commendation to Joshua Richardson a member of the 1st Over Wyre Company (BethelURC)in recognitionofhisexceptionalcourage inovercoming theinjuriesincurredinaseriousaccidentlastsummer.

Six teams from 1st Burnley, 3rd Burnley, 1st Oswaldtwisle and 1st Rishton participated inaneveningofindoorgamesatRyddingMethodistChurchOswaldwistle.Theboyshadagreateveningwhichconcludedwithdrinks,crispsandbiscuits.

In 1956 a Friends of the District scheme was imitated withtheexpressedpurposeofcreatingapermanentCampTrainingCentreFund.SupporterswereencouragedtomakeanannualdonationunderDeedofcovenantwhichenabledtheDistrict to reclaima further25% from theHMRC. I amconfident that our forebearers never envisagedour presentdayActivityCentrebuttheyexpressedtheirsupport for theDistrictwhich hasbeen a great encouragement to usovertheyears.

Friendsaremadeupofservingmembers,exmembersandsupporters.Sixtyyearsonthetimehascometorefreshtheschemeandby this letter I am inviting readers to considerbecoming a Friend and if possible make their contributionunderGiftAid.Wewillbegratefulforsupportasweseektofurtherdevelop thework in thisgeneration.Wehavemuchto be thankful for and we will be holding a Reception andThanksgivingServiceonSunday10thSeptember2016

TheSaturdayprogrammewasmadeuplargelyofoff-sitevisitstothePleasureBeach,ZooandtheSandcastlewaterpark.Fulluseof thecentre facilitiesweremadeandtheChaplainCharlotteRumble,aMethodistcommunityandfamilyworkermadeanexcellentcontributiontotheevent.

Forty members of the 1st Bare (Methodist) company participated in the carnival on Morecambe promenadetakingthethemeOlympicGames,thehomemadetrainwasenhancedbytheloanofavintageLondonbus.
