UWP believes the long term sustainability of its business and the environment in general can only be achieved by playing a direct role in the empowerment of communities and small enterprises. Responsible corporate citizenship is central to our ethos of “enhancing the quality of life” of the communities we serve.

The company contributes up to 10% of its profit after tax to empowerment each year. This falls into three broad areas:

• Socio-economicdevelopment;

• Enterprisedevelopment;

• Bursaryprogramme.

socio-economicdevelopment

The company promotes employee involvement and volunteerism in its socio-economic development support programmes.Branchofficesidentifyprojectstopositivelyimpactbeneficiarycommunities.

Enterprisedevelopmentpartners

Enterprise development support takes many forms at UWP. In the daily work of providing engineering solutions the company regularly partners with smaller companies. In addition to public sector initiatives, many projects include a capacity building element for small contractors or businesses.

The company actively engages in joint commercial ventures with small wholly black owned businesses.

Bursaryprogramme

Recognising the need to develop its own staff but also a broader pool of technical skills, UWP has an active bursary and grant programme providing financial support to external applicants, children of employees and to engineers in training.
