DETAILS OF SERVICES PROVIDED Traffic Studies – Company is shortlisted by MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd.) undertaking of Govt. of Maharashtra. Company has carried out several traffic studies of various toll stations of MSRDC in the state of Maharashtra for estimation of toll revenue. Company is also carrying out traffic studies for PWD, Govt. of Maharashtra for their various BOT projects. Company is using latest technologies and equipments used for traffic studies all over the world. In addition to traditional manual traffic count company also uses or suggests different methods and technologies as per requirement of client and site conditions. A. MANUAL TRAFFIC COUNTS –

CLASSIFIED TRAFFIC VOLUME COUNTS

General

Traffic studies are the initial step of any road project whether it is improvement

over existing road or construction of entirely new road. These studies are the base

for deciding many components such as roadway width, layer composition etc in

any highway design and to assess potential toll revenue from tollable traffic. The

procedure for conducting survey and the data collection are dealt in sub sections

briefly.

Requirement of Classified Traffic Volume Count

A knowledge of the vehicular volume using a road network is important for

understanding the efficiency at which the system works, at present and the

general quality of service offered to the road users. The traffic using a road is

composed of a variety of vehicles ranging from the simple pedal cycles to the

motor car and the heavy commercial vehicles. Each type having an influence on

the performance of the road its own way, a simple volume count, without

classifying the vehicles into distinct types, is of limited use. In addition to the

above, the source of toll revenue is from the traffic plying on the project road. As

the toll rate for each category of vehicle is different, it is necessary to establish the

traffic composition for assessment of potential toll revenue. It is therefore, the

normal practice is to take classified vehicle volume count to evaluate the traffic

composition on a road system.

Methodology

Classified traffic volume count has been carried out for seven consecutive days.

Traffic volume count was done in three shifts of 8 hrs for seven days with extra

number of enumerator as reliever during breaks.

Recording of Data

For the present traffic counting purpose, a day has been divided into three shifts

of 8 hours each and separate enumerators with a supervisor assigned for each

unit. Enumerators should be literate persons. Recording has been done for each

direction of travel separately. For this it was necessary to divide staff for every

shift into two parties. Recording has been done in a prescribed standard format

supplied by IRC: SP: 19-2001 “Manual for survey, Investigation and Preparation

of Road Projects (Second Revision)”.

Compilation of Data

Classified traffic volume data as recorded during survey have been analysed to

arrive at average daily traffic (ADT), peak hour traffic, traffic composition etc. The

details are indicated in separate sections.

Classified Traffic Volume Count Data Analysis

Traffic data collected during the classified traffic volume count survey has been

analyzed to obtain the following information:

a) Mode-wise daily traffic in terms total nos..

b) Peak hour’s duration and traffic during peak hours.

c) Traffic composition

For making capacity computations under mixed traffic conditions, the different

types of vehicles should be converted to a common unit known as “Passenger Car

Unit” by multiplying their number with relevant equivalent factors. These

equivalent factors as per IRC: 106-1990 “Guidelines for Capacity of Urban Roads

in plain Areas” are taken for analysis purpose.

O-D SURVEY ANALYSIS

In a transportation study, it is often necessary to know the exact origin and

destination o the trips. It is very essential to know the group of trips originating

from particular zones of the study area. The other information obtained from O-D

studies are Land use of the study area, House –hold information, Socio-economic

characters, trip pattern of the individuals from that particular origin and

destination, trip purpose and mode split analysis. From this information, the

traffic attracting and generating can be accessed. Origin is defined as the place

from where the trip begins and destination is the place where it ends.

REGISTRATION NUMBER / NUMBER PLATE SURVEY

Registration number survey is very useful while estimating the toll revenue for particular project. It helps a lot to find out % of local traffic from Average Daily Traffic observed at toll station. It is also useful to find out frequent travelers availing various concessions such as daily pass, monthly pass, discount coupons etc.

B. IN CAMERA TRAFFIC SURVEY Recently PWD, Govt. of Maharashtra decided to carry out In Camera traffic count as per guidelines given in the cabinet meeting. In this type of survey, CCTV cameras are situated at survey location where traffic count is to taken. Cameras and recording system is kept working for 24 hours without any break. For the purpose entire system has been provided UPS backup / Generator backup in case of power failure. Using recorded video footage, traffic count has been taken at office and traffic data alongwith recorded video data has been provided to client. It will be helpful for client to verify the data at any time as video footage is available with them. For this type of survey, advanced night vision cameras with Digital Video Recorders are used which are capable of storing more that 15 days data. C. TRAFFIC COUNT USING AVCC (AUTOMATIC VEHICLE COUNTER CUM

CLASSIFIER) AVCC Sensor

Treadle & loop are installed to detect vehicle presence. The AVC sensor uses inductive loops & treadles embedded directly in the road. These are used for obtaining parameters (such as number of axles, vehicle length (cm), loop-detuning factor, distance of axle from proceeding, vehicle class) of each vehicle passed. Treadles and loops are connected to a control circuitry.

Features :

• It is a fiber optic sensor designed for permanent road installation .

• It produces a decrease of optical transmittance whenever the load of an object passes over it.

• The fiber optic sensor is fitted into a special conduit, making sensor sensitive to vertical pressure

• It is immune against electromagnetic disturbances, corrosion, & lightning.

• The treadle installation is done into a groove of 30 mm deep, 16 mm wide and made flush to a road surface using sealant.

Features of Loop

• It is a multi strand copper cable.

• With three turns of cable, an antenna is formed which is tuned with a fixed frequency.

• The loop installation is done into a groove of 40 mm deep, 5 mm wide and made flush to a Road surface using sealant.

Durability – AVCC machine may be used for approximately 20-30 traffic surveys (being an electronic device this count may vary). AVCC sensor can be used for 4-5 traffic surveys if used on a good road surface. AVCC loop cable is to be replaced for each traffic survey. Photographs
