thousand years to its role as the center of the ancient civilization of Dilmun which dominated the

trade routes between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.

Bahrain is referred to as the “pearl of the gulf” because of it being an ideal island and its history of

expert pearl diving. In fact, pearl diving was the main stay of the country’s economy before oil was

first discovered in 1932. With this discovery, the nation embarked on a new era in the

development of its economy. Today Bahrain is one of the world’s top financial centre.

Recently Bahrain has experienced much in the way of modernization and alongside the ancient

forts and traditional souqs. You will find towering skyscrapers and luxurious residential areas. Yet,

Bahrain maintains its true sense of Arabian hospitality.

Bahrain was conquered by the Al Khalifa dynasty in 1783 when Shaikh Ahmed Al Fatih became the

first ruler of Bahrain. Ten generations later descendant H.M.King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa

transformed Bahrain into kingdom in year 2002 with a constitutional Monarch as its head. He also

introduced elections for parliament. HRH Prince Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa is the Prime

Minister and HRH Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa is the Crown Prince and commander in

chief of Bahrain Defence force.
