Dear Readers,

We would like to sincerely thank our customers and business partners for the successful 2017 business year. We have received a high volume of orders as a result of excellent collaboration and high demand from you.

Economically and politically challenging markets, e.g. China, India and Russia, created opportunities for major projects that we successfully managed as a dedicated and motivated URACA team. Even though we will be approaching maximum capacity as a result of these projects in 2018, which is set to be an exciting year, the URACA workforce will be sure to maintain customer orientation at the same high level. Changes in sales management

Around 250 asylum seekers currently live in Bad Urach. So far they have been housed in the pe-ripheries. According to newspaper reports, May-or E. Rebmann has said the aim is to offer these people a new home. Under the guiding principle of “Helping people to help themselves”, work is being done to enable these people lead inde-pendent lives. Language courses play a key role here, as do the relentless dedication of the vol-unteers and internships at companies and in businesses with skilled crafts and trades. so

Green energy at URACA

Following completion of the building works over the past few years, our buildings and workstations are in great shape. When it came to optimising the design of the work-stations, we took our colleagues’ ideas into consideration. This created a signi cantly optimised material « ow and im-proved work sequences. The workforce are highly satis ed with their new workstations – this was con rmed in an in-ternal survey. rz

Asylum with prospects

With URACA’s certi cation in environmental and energy management in 2016, we are obligated to plan and implement a continuous set of measures to boost our energy ef ciency and reduce environmental pollution. An im-portant part of this certi cation is URACA’s commitment to only using elec-tricity from 100% renewable resources from 1 January 2018. The proportion of energy from renewable sources was previously only 41.5%. The reduction in CO2 emissions throughout the company resulting from this measure was estimated to be 1600 tonnes per year, which equals 65% saving in green-house gases. In addition, URACA runs a water turbine on the Erms river and uses this water to test the pumps. This covers around 10% of our electrical energy needs, de-pending on the « ow of water. Pursuing these goals in a consistent manner is equally important to URACA’s owners, management and workforce. ch

Solid foundations …… for more than just Swabian house builders.

Solid foundations are also vital in vocational training, and a crucial prerequisite for a ful lling and re-warding career. This is another rea-son why URACA is heavily investing in training young people. This com-mitment is not limited to train-

ing within the company. In actual fact, it begins much earlier than this. URACA has established part-nerships with almost all schools in Bad Urach and the surrounding ar-ea. This collaboration takes a num-ber of forms and has also become a part of practical school life.

A few examples include:• Active involvement in the par-ents’ forum and the pupils’ work-shops to offer career guidance at Geschwister-Scholl-Realschule sec-ondary school in Bad Urach• Sponsoring the 3D-CAD commit-tee at Graf-Eberhard-Gymnasium secondary school in Bad Urach• Participation in the recruitment fairs at the commercial school in Metzingen and Georg-Goldstein-Schule school in Bad Urach

• Running the pupil academy at Graf-Eberhard-Gymnasium second-ary school in Bad Urach• Involvement in the Board of the friends’ association at Georg-Gold-stein-Schule school in Bad Urach• Member of the preparation team organising Bad Urach’s train-ing roundtable• Running internships for pupils

In this respect, it is no wonder that applicants very often state in their cover letters that they have had previous contact with URACA through the aforementioned activ-ities.

URACA is con dent that investing in training, and thus in the future of the company, requires great pa-tience – but it always pays off. mr

Mr. Albin Viertler and Mr. Herbert Que-iser have both reached their well-de-served retirement, and the company will de nitely miss them. Albin Viertler had worked for our company for 31 years. Most recently, he was responsible for the establishment of the Oil and Gas sales division. He was passionate about the continuous development of prod-ucts and sales channels.

Herbert Queiser had been with the com-pany for 30 years. Most recently, he was the Head of Sales for the High Pressure Cleaning division. Throughout his ca-reer, he closely monitored product de-velopment, product management and consistently aligned the company’s marketing strategy with market re-quirements.

We are very grateful for all of the hard work these col-leagues have put into URACA. We wish both managers the very best in this new chapter of their lives.

But the show must go on, and manage-ment faced the challenge of bridging this gap so that we can continue to of-fer our customers the usual support go-ing forward. Three sales divisions – Pro-cess and Industrial Pumps, Oil and Gas and High Pressure Cleaning – will be fur-ther consolidated, and will now be run

by Director of Sales Mr. Michael Lenz. With a love of tech-nology, the devoted engineer has spent 12 years sharing his passion for the technical diversity of URACA high-pressure plunger pumps. He has also proven his worth and his dedi-cation to excellent customer service in the role of Head of Sales for Process and Industrial Pumps. We wish him the greatest success. He has the full support of his team and the entire workforce in his latest challenge as Director of Sales. gs

Vilgertshofen, a municipality in Upper Bavaria with a population of 2600. The community’s drinking water comes from a source in Lech-mühlen in the municipality of Fuchstal. It is pumped into the half way up tank near Mundraching and the elevated tank near Issing us-ing energy generated in an environmentally friendly way from water used in hydropower systems. When the drinking water supply was modernised at the end of the 1970s, the people in charge of the pro-ject relied on a KD210-KN by URACA. Until the start of this year, the pump had been reliably supplying drinking water to the region for four decades. The pump was sent to our head quarter in Bad Urach for a complete overhaul due to increased leakage. As an interim measure, the KD624 standby pump, which was purchased in 1992, resumed service in place of the KD210-KN.

When it arrived, we completely dismantled and cleaned the pump. Due to its long service life, the wear limits, both in the mechanism and the uid conducting part, had been exceeded in several places. As the KD210 is an outdated model and some spare parts had to be specially manufactured, performing repairs was borderline due to the cost and delivery times. Yet the authorities in the municipality of Vilgertshofen were not deterred by this. They value reliability and sus-tainability, which they had received for 40 years with the KD210-KN. The pump was xed and brought back into service in calendar week 31 of 2017. This should be enough to ensure the water supply for the mu-nicipality of Vilgertshofen for generations to come. hs

Successful ISO 9001:2015 certifi cation

Anniversary year 2018We are URACA. Since 1893.

URACA has set up a subsidiary in China, modernised and expanded the subsidiary in France and strengthened the branch in Mettmann, Germany.

By founding the URACA High Pressure Technology (Dalian) Co, Ltd. subsidiary in Dalian, URACA is acknowledging the importance of the Chinese market and tak-ing action. By integrating the ex-isting representatives with the contact partners known on the

market into a legally independent subsidiary, we can dis-tribute our complete portfolio of products and servic-es with even more presence on the Chinese market. In-creased market presence, on-site service and thus more customer orientation and a rise in the availability of our products in China are just a few of the reasons why our customers continue to choose URACA. By providing techni-cal consultation and local service within the market itself, we can shorten reaction times and support our customers.

URACA is also focusing on the French market. URACA France has been in operation for 32 years. It is well estab-lished on the market and continues to grow. As a result, we needed to expand our site. So we decided to acquire a new site with a modern building. We expect to have com-pleted the move by the start of 2018 at the very latest.

New recruits have been taken on at the URACA branch in Mettmann. We need to be constantly available to deal with customer issues, so we decided to put the branch of ce in the capable hands of Mr. Michael Dewi and Mr. Markus Wienold. Promoting our products on our custom-ers’ premises, technical consultations for all high-pressure applications and faster reaction times by the on-site ser-vice centre are just a few of our ambitious challenges. We wish our colleagues all the best in these new ventures, which we hope will appeal to our customers. gs

Almost all deposits in road tankers, contain-ers, tank wagons and other vessels can be re-moved with high-pressure water. A high-pres-sure plunger pump presses water through the nozzles of the URACA TWK tank cleaning head at a pressure of up to 1,600 bar. The wa-ter jet cuts through the deposits, and its de- ned motion sequence guarantees compre-hensive removal of these dirt deposits. Due to the EC-type examination certi cate in line with the ATEX Directive, various tank clean-ing heads can be used in all explosion pro-tection zones (except in mining). They can also be used in explosive atmospheres caused by gases, vapours, mists and dust.We have developed the TWK18-500 and TWK13-1200, easy-to-maintain tank cleaning heads designed for mo-bile use and with service providers in mind. The rotor speed’s wide range of set-tings and the high ow volumes make these models powerful cleaners that cause few pressure losses.

Cleaning the insides of the tanks with high-pres-sure water is an environmentally friendly meth-od, which does not require the use of chemicals, mechanical tools or boiling. Rather than throw-ing away the accrued cleaning water in its entire-ty, the dirt particles are separated and disposed of. Compared to conventional methods, high-pres-sure cleaning is known for its considerably shorter cleaning times and a better cleaning effect. The correct position of the tank cleaning head is essential for optimum cleaning. The positioning

devices and reel systems, which are individual-ly adapted to the tank’s shape, enable the cleaning process to be individually tailored to each container. The stroke and angle of the SPE25 positioning device are easy to ad-just so that the tank cleaning head can be moved to the correct position in the tank. This enables individual customer-speci c cleaning solutions to be implemented for fast and effective cleaning. Increased pro-

ductivity and the avoidance of impurities in the product to be transported lead to short payback periods. ws

Various procedures can be used to process residu-al oil, which is accrued after re ning heavy oil, bi-tumen or normal crude oil. It is then compressed to around 150 - 250 bar, mixed with hydrogen and fed into the hydrogenation reactor at up to 450°C. This critical process uses pure hydrogen, so sys-tem failure, particularly in the feed pumps is not acceptable. Otherwise, extremely critical operat-ing conditions may arise. As a result, redundant solutions with standby capacity for the pumps are usually used. When in use, each pump is also monitored with adapted instrumentation to de-tect possible faults early and react to them ac-cordingly, so that it does not become a hazardous situation.

Oil as a pumped medium is usually non-problem-atic and easy to handle. However, residual oil may contain a number of aggressive and corrosive el-ements. Hydrogen sulphide and sulphur (partic-ularly at high temperatures) are the worst cul-prits here. At moderate temperatures, sulphur

still possesses positive properties in terms of lu-bricity between the plunger and mechanical seal. But at high temperatures, it behaves in a nega-tive way and can cause heavy corrosion. Sulphur attacks metallic materials that come into contact with the pumped medium here. The challenge for pump suppliers is in choosing and using high-qual-ity alloys to prevent corrosion.

High operating temperatures also mean that the components expand when exposed to heat. Find-ing constructive ways to take account of these conditions and ensure that the pumps work aw-lessly, even in hot conditions, requires a wealth of experience and specialist knowledge.

On the whole, the use of hot oil tests pump manu-facturers’ expertise in every respect. In every pro-ject, URACA demonstrates that our pumps do not break a sweat, even at high temperatures. This is how they have managed to attain a dominant po-sition on the market. cn

“An important milestone for URACA”

URACA has been certi ed in line with ISO 9001:2015 since 23 March 2017, making it one of the rst companies to be certi ed under the new standard. The 2015 version is an absolute basic requirement for creating an integrat-ed management system and setting our own quality re-quirements. The new standard provides the opportunity to combine various management systems more easily and use them more effectively as a management tool. The transition process began with training sessions and workshops, which management also attended. Follow-ing this, all relevant work ows and process risks were ana-lysed and the process descriptions compiled with persons in charge. Every employee made an active contribution, without exception. The Lloyds Register certifying body concluded that: “ URACA has a very sophisticated, ef cient and, above all, active management system.” The auditors stated that: “The company’s aspiration for continuous development and its implementation of innovative ideas for products and processes stand out in particular. URACA has even more potential to unlock, e.g. in shop oor management.”Claus Haubeil, Gunter Stöhr and Robert Zimmermann add-ed: “The certi cation is an important milestone for us. We believe that quality means a vigorous and continuous de-velopment process with active involvement from the en-tire workforce.”The certi cation authenticates URACA’s established and future-oriented management processes – a solid basis for

continuing our reliable partnership with our customers. ds

Managing Directors and Quality Management Representative, Dagmar Schmid, are delighted to have passed the certi cation process.

We believe that quality means a vigorous and continuous de-velopment process with active involvement from the en-tire workforce.”The certi cation authenticates URACA’s established and future-oriented management processes – a solid basis for

continuing our reliable partnership with our customers. ds

ing energy generated in an environmentally friendly way from water used in hydropower systems. As an interim measure, the KD624 standby pump, which was purchased in 1992,

This is what URACA stands for. We would also like to thank every single URACA employee for supporting the URACA brand on a daily basis.

In addition to projects already in the pipeline, we will be presenting our new products at the IFAT and ACHEMA trade fairs in 2018. Visit us there and be inspired by our technical solutions, bene t from our many years of expertise and receive advice on your needs. Together we can nd the perfect solution.

URACA was one of the brave and enthusiastic pioneers to risk recerti cation in line with the new DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 standard. The auditors were impressed by the process we use to implement the standard requirements and the entire URACA workforce’s high level of expertise.

We will be starting the coming year, which is also our 125th anniversary, under the motto of “We are URACA. Since 1893.”. Let’s get started, there is so much to get done!

We wish you all the best for 2018 and hope reading URACA Impression provides plenty of inspiration.

He has the full support of his team and the entire workforce in his latest challenge as Director of Sales. gs

Well equipped for the future

URACA apprentices with managers and trainers

In coal power plants, the heads on the ue gas desulphurisation plants – which are often up to 80 m in height – must be cleaned on a regular basis.

Over time, very hard and rock-like deposits – similar to stalactites – build up around the edges of the combustion chamber. The sys-tem’s performance suffers dramatically as these deposits constantly continue to grow. There is also the risk of larger pieces coming loose and falling, which is a safety hazard. As such, the deposits must be removed on a regular basis to ensure safety and maintain the system’s performance.

Traditionally, cleaning is carried out manual-ly on scaffolding or via rope access in a min-ing operation. However, this is very time-consuming and extremely dangerous. Each block of the power station must be shut down completely for cleaning, so the re-sulting production downtimes can quickly cost millions. As a result, it is extremely im-

portant that the down times, and thus the cleaning times, are kept as short as possi-ble. Cleaning using our tank cleaning heads and our JetPower480 and JetPower600 high-performance pump units is an extremely ef-fective and ergonomic solution. URACA can slash the required cleaning times in compar-ison to the traditional method. Employees do not need to enter the unit, so the clean-ing staff’s safety is signi cantly increased.

The perfect solution here are the « ow-op-timised URACA tank cleaning heads TWK for maximum performance. The very large cleaning radius of the URACA 3D wash heads enables large-scale cleaning of dirty or con-taminated surfaces. The wash heads can be placed in the optimum position using spe-cialised positioning devices. mm
