CONCEPTThe Fab Collab iteration of the Columbia Transit System bus stop redesign is based onversatility, modularity, and sustainability. With aest hetics catching the eye of riders andart aficionados alike, the design solution will put a new face on the citys publictransportation system. A living art gallery displaying Columbias local artists will be fea-tured at every stop.

    GREEN INITIATIVESThe

planned overhaul of the current Columbia Transit System bus shelters is backed bygreen design initiatives and sustainable technologies. The modularity of the bus shelterdesign is a cost effective approach to sustainable design. All exterior panels are basedon a 4x8 template and are all fastened to one another and the underlying structure byglass friction clamps. All panels are interchangeable allowing for a customizable shelterlayout. Various works of art can be displayed on each section and if damaged, therepair process is as simple as unfastening and replacing them.

ENERGY: The consideration of a more efficient approach to saving electricity wasacknowledged by the introduction of solar panels into our design solution. Photovolta-ics will be located on a dual axis rotating panel located above the exterior bike storagearea. Each set of solar panels will be site-specifically installed to maximize solar gain foreach bus stop location. This system will be the source of power for the interior LEDtube lighting for night use.

WATER: Sustainability is capitalized on our green roof system. Two thirds of therooftop will be composed of green roof blocks to collect a large amount of rainwaterand any runoff from the these portions of the roof, including the backward slopingcanopy at top, will be collected by a gutter system and then displaced among the sur-rounding site.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY: Circulation will be controlled by the open entry spaceup front and cross ventilation will be governed by perforated kick plates at the base ofall transparent panels and through the open canopy at the rooftop.

    North Orientation

    East Orientation

Eco-Mod shelters are all about the experience, whether itpertains to the area in which it is located or even the route color. This

allows users to never experience the same thing twice. Since our

design is extremely modular, each panel is interchangeable, en-abling bus shelters to change as styles and

preferences change. This motivates users to go to all the

shelters, thus using multiple connection routes. Art work will belocated inside the shelters to create an experience inside and out.The interchangeability of these panels allows for use and reuse,

adding to the sustainability because they will continue their life-cycle

on other shelters or in homes.

    The roof contains mesh and

    aluminum, withrecycled

    panels

    and framing. The overhang pro-

tects the shelter from rainandsnow, while the mesh allows for

    airflow and cooling in the

    summer.

    These supports

    have the option

    to be made of

    either recycled

    aluminum, or

    reclaimed wood.

    Bike racks will be made

    out of the same materi-

    al as the support col-

    umns. They will be

    attached to the con-

    crete and

    structure by L-brackets

    Transparent pieces are placed

along the top of the wall to allow

sunlight to enter thespace. This wall is increased by a module

of two feet in order to create a

    sloped roof, providing shade

    for the bikes and throughout

    the shelter.

    Panel Connection Details

    The sloped roof allows

    for orientations of the

    solar panel that will

    provide the best results

    in terms of power gain.

This wall will always be oriented so

The optional flat roof allows for art-

    work and advertisements, with

    open spaces for continued incorpo-

    ration of ventilation.

    Aluminum panels are made from

    LEED certified recycled materials

and will sit flush with the module,

    increasing weather resistance and

    protecting users.

    North Orientation

The emphasis in our design is

    modularity. The entire shelter

    consists of only two

components. Each panel can becustomized based on the desires for

each shelter, whether that is with

artwork, glass, mesh, or just open.

This makes it easy to incorporate

    future technology, should funding

become available. This also allows for

    expansion.Should the shelter get

    too small, simply add another

row of panels to each side

    and extend as needed!

    Earth Friendly, Passenger Friendly

    The universal designof this shelter is earthfriendly by using locally resourced sustainable materials;

filtering storm water run-offwhich helps sustain the

Missouri natve plants and treesgrowing around the

shelter; and collectng and convertng solar energyto

    light the interior.

The majority of the materials used in this shelter come

from the Midwest, including local steel from southern

Missouri with 34.9% recycled content, colored acrylic

panels from Illinois, and 50% recycled glass porous

    paving from Columbia Missouri.

Ride and store your bike at the shelter,

stay dry and safe while waitng for the

bus and reduce your carbon footprint.
