    A Report on the Activities o Alachua County GovernmenJune 17, 2011

    Alachua County Commissioner Rodney J. Long

    spoke to the public on Wednesday June 15th, in the

    Alachua County Administration Building, Jack Durrance

    Auditorium. He spoke about his decision to retire rom

    the County Commission by not seeking re-election in

    November o 2012.

    Commissioner Long has been involved civically

    and politically in Gainesville and Alachua County since

    1978. In March 1988, Commissioner Long was elected

    Gainesvilles rst single-member district commissioner. He was re-elected to a second

    term in March 1991. In May o 1991, he was chosen by his colleagues to serve as

    Gainesvilles rst district mayor-commissioner.

    In November 2000, Commissioner Long was elected to serve on the Alachua

    County Commission, becoming the rst Arican American to serve on both theCity and County Commissions. He served three consecutive terms as a County

    Commissioner

    Alachua County Community Support Services Director Elmira

    Warren has been chosen by the National Association o County

    Human Services Administrators (NACHSA) to serve as secretary o

    ts organization that represents county human service agencies

    nationwide. NACHSA works to promote

    and strengthen networks o county

    and community human services

    that protect children, amilies

    and the elderly, and that move

    disadvantaged amilies into sel-

    suciency.

    Elmira Warren to be Secretary to NACHSAAs secretary Ms. Warren will be responsible or recording

    minutes o the organizations meetings serving as a member o

    Executive Committee. Her responsibilities will begin in July, wh

    she will attend the national meeting to be held in Portland, Ore

    rom July 15th to 19th, which be part o the National Associatio

    Counties Annual Conerence.

    Ms. Warren will represent Alachua County on monthly calls

    and updates on ederal legislation and will gather and share

    inormation about county human service policies, nancing, an

    operations. Most recently NACHSA was requested by the Obam

    Administration to gather inormation rom the nations counties

    identiy regulatory and statutory barriers conronted by agencie

    when administering programs to serve their residents.

    Based in Washington, D.C., NACSHA supports the proessiodevelopment o administrators committed to delivering quality

    services to county residents. It provides inormation rom a var

    o sources to help counties navigate the ever changing ederal

    landscape. The organization also educated ederal policymaker

    the roles and responsibilities o county human services systems

    As the Downtown Farmers Garden approaches its one year

    anniversary, the County and its partners are taking a moment to

    ook at the accomplishments to date in 2011.

    With the assistance o Travis Mitchell, Florida Organic Growers

    Food Project Coordinator, approximately 100 volunteer hours

    ogged, a host o successul community events, international

    aid assistance and $500 worth o produce donated to charitable

    groups the Downtown Farmers Garden is becoming a hub o

    urban agriculture.

    Community partners include: Florida Organic Growers,

    Alachua YouthBuild, Agency or Persons with Disabilities,

    Americorps, Grow Gainesville, University o Florida Oce o

    Sustainability and the Downtown Rotary Club. These groups work

    to make the garden a success.

    Whats On Alachua County alks

    The Alachua County Public Works Department is beginning

    onstruction on two roadway projects.

    The rst project is the resuracing o NW/SW 91st Street rom

    W 8th Avenue to Newberry Road. This project includes milling

    nd resuracing the existing roadway, widening and relocating the

    existing sidewalk, and adding curb and gutter to portions o the

    oad. A construction contract was awarded to DAB Constructors,

    nc. or $1.3 million. Work will begin on June 13, 2011, and last

    hrough October 2011. The public should expect daily daytime

    ane closures and delays when traveling through this area.

    The second project is the Main Street resuracing and

    ignalization project rom NW 8th Avenue to NW 23rd Avenue.This project includes placing the nal layer o asphalt on the

    oadway rom NW 14th Avenue to just north o 16th Avenue, the

    econstruction o the signals at NW 10th Avenue and NW 16th

    Avenue, sidewalk construction, and the placement o ber-optic

    able to connect the signals to the Trac Management Center.

    A construction contract was awarded to APAC-Southeast or

    1.2 million. Work will begin on June 20, 2011, and last through

    December 2011. Most o the work between NW 8th Avenue and

    NW 16th Avenue will take place at night, but the public should still

    expect delays when traveling through this area.

    On Saturday June 4th, the Alachua County Environmental

    rotection Department teamed up with the Florida Trails

    Association to lead a nature hike or National Trails Day at the

    Countys Mill Creek Preserve. The event was a success with

    ver 30 attendees ranging in age rom young children to older

    dults. Dennis Miranda, the Executive Director o the Florida

    rail Association and Chris Bird, Director o the Alachua County

    nvironmental Protection Department, kicked o the event with

    hort presentations on the benets o hiking, the Alachua County

    orever Program, and the importance o conservation lands in

    protecting water resources, wildlie habitats and natural resource-

    based recreation.

    A Walk in the WoodsThe roughly 3 mile hike meandered along trails in the 1,23

    acre Mill Creek Preserve. Swallow-tailed kites, summer tanager

    blue purse web spiders, and the beech magnolia slope orest

    were star eatures o the hike. Hikers also learned about resourc

    management activities occurring on the preserve. Over all it wa

    lovely morning in the woods with a great group o people.

    June 27, 2011 is National HIV Testing Day. The Alachua County

    Health Department (ACHD) encourages residents to take the test

    nd take control o their health. It is an opportunity or everyone

    n the community to nd out their HIV status. Every nine and a halminutes someone in the United States is inected with HIV. Thirty

    ases in the United States the epidemic continues.

    n ADA Expo to celebrate the 21st anniversary o the Americanwith Disabilities Act (ADA). The Expo will be held rom 1 p.m. - 4

    p.m., Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the Sidney Lanier Center (312

    NW 16th Avenue, Gainesville). It is ree and open to the public.

    Employers & small business owners are especially encouraged to

    ttend.

    Passed in July 1990, the ADA creates an equal opportunity

    or individuals with disabilities in employment, education,

    ransportation and accommodations.

    This 7th Annual ADA Expo will eature agencies, businesses

    nd organizations that oer service to individuals with disabilities.Many vendors will also be present displaying the latest assistive

    echnology devices, methods and inormation in health,

    ccessibility or accommodation. This years theme is, Emergency

    Preparedness: Are You Ready? Speakers will discuss how to prepare

    or and what to do in the event o a hurricane, tornado or other

    emergency. The Area Director o the Small Business Development

    Center at the University o North Florida will also address Economic

    Recovery Assistance programs or Small Businesses.

    Individuals will also be able to register with Alachua County

    Emergency Management or special needs assistance in the event

    o an emergency. Participants are invited to experience accessible

    ADA Expo 2011voting machines, hosted by the Supervisor o Elections Oce

    Memorial Day CeremonyThe Alachua County Veteran Services Oce celebrated

    Memorial Day with a ceremony at Forrest Meadows Cemetery E

    (3700 SE Hawthorne Rd, Gainesville).

    This years theme was, Honoring our Fire Rescue Veterans.

    Forest Meadows Funeral Home and the Department o VeteranAairs hosted this community event. It eatured participation

    by various groups including; Alachua County and the City o

    Gainesville Fire Rescue, Young Marines, students o Buchholz Hi

    School, and others. A static display o re and rescue equipmen

    a special display o war time history as well as various veterans

    organizations displays were available to the public in honor o o

    war dead. The ceremony was ollowed by a picnic on the groun
