COMMUNITY SERVICE 2011-12

Annual Events/Projects 2011-12

1. August: Rotary Beef BBQ at Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival

This is a 40+ year tradition. Over 2 days, 1500 lbs of prime beef is slow cooked over an alder fire. This year over 2600 beef sandwiches were served with revenue of $16,000. The profits of $8900 go to Squamish Days/Loggers Sports and Squamish

Rotary Community projects.

2. December: Hamper Delivery – Community Christmas Cares

Community Christmas Cares provides Christmas hampers to families and individuals in Squamish. Last year, Squamish Rotary assisted in the sorting, packing and delivery of over 400 hampers.

3. May: Bicycle Safety (Don Patrick)

Each year with the RCMP and schools, Squamish Rotarians help organize and run the bicycle safety day at each elementary school. Students learn about bicycle maintenance, safe riding and operation of their bikes. Unfortunately, due to the teachers’ dispute, this didn’t happen this year. We will be back next year!

4. May: Dry Grad Casino Night (Sheri Davis)

Annually, Squamish Rotary organised and ran the Casino night for High School Graduates. Again, this didn’t happen this year.

5. June: Linda Carney Rotary Cares Fund (Lino Vanzella)

This fund was founded in honour of Past President Linda Carney, to assist people in the Howe Sound corridor with medical needs that are not covered by conventional

medical funding. Each year the Rotary Club raises money through the Linda Carney Challenge bike ride as part of the Test of Metal weekend. Over $15,000 was raised this year.

6. On-going: Rotary Community Garden (Sheri Davis)

These 24 community garden plots are located beside the Squamish Valley Golf

Course and are available for rent by Squamish residents with a green thumb but no green space. Squamish Rotary built, administers, and maintains this community space.

7. On-going: School Breakfast Program

This year, Rotary has been funding the school breakfast program at Brackendale,

Garibaldi Highlands, Squamish and Stawamus Elementary Schools. Rotarians also volunteered to serve the breakfasts. The volunteers have served 8,135 breakfasts during the school year.

8. Ongoing: Rotary Garden at the Westcoast Railway

Park (Rose Fast)

Maintenance and enhancements continued at the Rotary Garden through the volunteer efforts of Squamish Rotarians.

9. May: Gaming Funds Application and Distribution

(Liz Scott)

The Gaming Commission awarded $15,000 to Squamish Rotary Club. These funds

were allocated to the following community or Rotary programs:-

• School Breakfast Program: $4000

• Evans Lake Forest Education Camp: $400 • Rotary Adventures Programs: $2000 • Rotary Youth Leadership Awards: $2600 • Helping Hands Society: $2000

• Junior Olympics Archery Program: $1000 • Big Brothers/Big Sisters Teen Mentoring: $2000 • Biathlon Bears Kids Program: $1000

10. Other Community Support

Our Squamish Club also provided financial support to the following:

• Squamish Hospice Society • Squamish Food Bank

• Squamish Triathlon – bike racks

Special Events/Projects 2011-12

1. September: Rivers’ Day – Britannia Beach

Squamish Rotary supported this event by serving home-made cookies and apple cider.

2. April : Raised garden beds at Squamish Elementary School

Our Club built seven raised garden at Squamish Elementary School for use by students.

Squamish Rotarians continue to make a significant contribution to the community through service; with many hours of volunteer time, and programs and project funding of approximately $45,000.

OBJECTIVES for 2012/13

Continue and develop the successful Community Service Programs and Projects. Determine and implement new local community projects for 2012/13. Focus on

hands-on projects wherever possible.
