Appendix B: Frequently Asked Questions

about Federal Work-Study

What happens if I am unable to work the total amount of hours that I was awarded? Students cannot receive aid for hours they do not work. Therefore, students will receive payment only for the hours that they work. If the student is counting on this aid to pay the outstanding balance, the student is responsible for paying money to the school to make up the difference. Do I have to pay money back if I don't work all of my hours? No, because the aid is not awarded until the student performs the work. Therefore, students do not have to pay money back if they do not work all of their hours. However, they will not receive payment for hours they don't work. What does this have to do with my financial aid? If work‐study is awarded to a student, the funds are listed as aid on the student's financial aid award letter. Students have to be eligible to receive money through the Federal Work‐Study Program to receive the award. A student interested in receiving Federal Work‐Study must complete the FAFSA every year. Why isn't my work‐study award subtracted from my bill? Your work‐study award is not credited to your student account until you perform the work, receive the money, and ask the Student Accounts Office to credit the amount to your account. After students have earned money through the program, they have the option to sign their checks over to Chatham to be applied against their account. Alternatively, they can decide not to sign their monthly check over to Chatham and cash their check for their personal use. However, if they do so, they will not receive the funds as a credit on their student account. What if my contract indicates that I need to work 15 hours per week, but my schedule only permits me to work 10 hours per week? You should coordinate your needs with those of your supervisor. Your contract indicates the total number of hours per week that you would need to work to receive your entire work‐study award. Schedules should be arranged with department supervisors in advance to determine a schedule that is manageable between both parties. If you do not use your entire award, your award for the following year will be reduced by the amount that you did not use, assuming you still meet other eligibility requirements. How often am I paid? Students receive a pay check monthly for work performed the previous month. How can I apply the check to my balance? After you receive your monthly pay check, bring it to the Student Accounts Office and we'll accept it as payment against your student account. If you decide to use it for other purposes, take the check to your bank.
