GMC students run for Robinson

Contributed photoSaturday, Nov. 20, marked the 15th annual Will Robinson Memorial Run to honor a fallen hero, Deputy Will Robinson,a 1987 graduate of GMC High School, who was killed in the line of duty, Dec. 17, 1995. GMC Running and CrossCountry Coach Stacie Goggans said, ‘The race has become a tradition for GMC and this year; 180 GMC prep studentsparticipated.’ The race has been held since 1996 to support several local charities, and the funds raised this year willbenefit the Baldwin County CHAMPS Program, the GMC Will Robinson Scholarship Fund and the GMC AlumniAssociation Circle of Friends Scholarship Fund.

GMC students celebrate‘National Chemistry Week’

JMA supports Beta Club

Recently, GMC Prep School celebrated“National Chemistry Week.”

Chemistry students from Georgia CollegeState University came to the school to shareinteresting hands-on activities with MAJClay McElheny’s chemistry classes.

The theme of the week was “Behind the

Scenes with Chemistry” which explored thechemistry behind some of the special effectsthat are seen in movies and explored com-mon chemical concepts of everyday life. Allthe students enjoyed the activities andappreciated GCSU’s chemistry club takingtime to visit the classroom.

Thanks to the John Milledge Academy family who showedup to support the recent JMA Beta Night at Chick-fil-A. TheBeta Club, with the communities help, raised $450 to puttowards school improvements. JMA 11th graders worked to master elements of grammar by creating achildren’s book that focused on one part of speech. After presenting thebooks to the third grade, students donated their work to Mrs. Stefanoand Mrs. Deariso to use as resources throughout the year.

Students in Mrs. Linda White’s eighth grade Georgia History classes arestudying Early Native American cultures in Georgia. For this performancetask, the students are Woodland Indians decorating their food vessels(pottery). When the students finish they will become archaeologists andbreak the pots, bury them and dig them up as artifacts.

Native Americans eat Thanksgiving at Eagle Ridge

Mrs. Spivey and Mrs. Tweedy’s kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge Elementary dressed up as Native Americans to eat Thanksgiving dinner with familyat school. Afterward they returned to thank the lunchroom workers for the wonderful feast by gifting them with necklaces and small bags of candy.The students have learned about the Pilgrims, Native Americans and the first Thanksgiving feast.

Anna Dunn was honored with a visit from 13 WMAZ after she wasselected as My Teacher is Tops. A student, Allen Edwards, in her classwrote a letter to the news station telling why his third grade teacherdeserved to win My Teacher is Tops. Allen said that Mrs. Dunn’s teachingbrings all the students together. Mrs. Dunn was very surprised and hon-ored with 13 WMAZ reporters showed up to present her with the award.She stated in the interview: ‘It’s wonderful when they learn, especiallywhen it’s something I’ve taught them and they come back and they cantell me everything that I’ve taught them and we do that those thatknow everything that I say and everything that I’ve taught them andthat’s a wonderful feeling.’ Mrs. Dunn is a third grade teacher at BlandyHills Elementary School in Baldwin County. Many of her students saidthat she makes learning fun with songs and games. Congratulations toa wonderful teacher in Baldwin County. It is great to know that a stu-dent took the time to write a letter to recognize what a great job histeacher is doing to educate him and all her other students.

Dr. Drummond’s fifth grade science classes at Creekside Elementary arelearning that some objects are too small to be seen without magnifica-tion. In the experiment pictured, Kaleb Brown and Amiya Castillo com-pared and contrasted the physical properties of powdered sugar, gran-ulated sugar and sugar cubes. They discovered the magnifying glassesallowed them to see some very interesting things that they could notsee with just their eyes!

GMC takes Civil War trip

The GMC Prep School eighth grade class recently took a field trip to theSouthern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Highlights ofthe trip were watching a film on the “Great Locomotive Chase” thatoccurred during Civil War, seeing “The General” which is the actual loco-motive from the chase housed in the museum, and simulating the load-ing and firing of Civil War muskets. EcoClub is caretaker of Greenway

Members of the Oak Hill EcoClub met at the Oconee River Greenway recently to assist in the Georgia Power Rivers Alive Cleanup. The OHMS EcoClubare the official ‘caretakers’ of our community’s beautiful river walk and meet there regularly to maintain its cleanliness and natural beauty.

I am from Hyderabad, the cap-ital of A.P. in the south of India.I received my bachelor’s inmath, physics and chemistry ineducation and master’s degreein mathematics from LoyolaCollege. I have been teachingfor 16 years, between India andthe United States. In India, the11th and 12th grades are consid-ered Intermediate College. Igave up a lot of time in Indiaworking with tutorial programsand helping market academics.Before Milledgeville, I was inBluffton, SC for three years.

What three words do you thinkstudents use to describe you?

Makes Math Fun.

What interests do you haveoutside of school?

I play music, like the flute,guitar and the keyboard. I likeIndian music, but slowly I amgetting into American music

and classical music. I was a soc-cer captain for the university,so I love to play. It is easy for meto get those students who likesports because I like all thattoo. It is easy for me to under-stand what they are goingthrough, because I was a sports-man in school. Sometimes it istough, but you can perform withboth studies and sports. I have awife and two kids: daughter, 11and son, 4. My daughter loves todance and is very excited aboutstarting school at JohnMilledge. They have been inIndia for the last 15 months; Iam so happy to give my fullattention to their studies andtalents now that they are inMilledgeville with me.

If you were a superhero, whatwould be your superpower?

I would want to predict thefuture, so I could control mypresent. Really, I would justwant to help out as many peopleas possible.

Midway students complete author study

Midway's second graders recently completed an author study of TomieDePaola. Katherin Smith, elementary Spanish teacher at JMA, came toread the Spanish Christmas story The Night of Los Posadas, a retold taleby Tomie DePaola as part of this unit study. The children enjoyed com-pleting many activities to accompany each story.


For the sixth year in a row, GMC Prep School students were invited to participate in the pre-game ceremony and presentation of colors during the 10Southeastern Conference Championship (SEC) Game on Dec. 4 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Maj. Tom Hall, USA (Ret.), GMC Officer in Charge, said,‘Our cadets are the only high school students invited to participate in this event alongside more than 100 college students. As our cadets always do,they conducted themselves very well.’ Ms. Pam Antista, director of the pre-game ceremony, remarked, ‘I put the GMC cadets on cruise control. I knowI won’t have to tell them what to do or how to act.’ GMC and the SEC look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.

Don’t miss Black Excellence Program

The Oak Hill Middle School Black Excellence Program theme this year is‘This is American History.’ This production is designed to educate, enlight-en and entertain the community about the importance of Black History. Italso keeps our youth abreast of the past, present and future. The pro-gram will highlight local and world known black leaders and musicalicons from opera to the funk era that have paved the way for musical suc-cess for African-Americans. Also, the most demanded segments from pre-vious years will be highlighted. We will honor our military soldiers witha special tribute as well perform African, hip-hop, inspirational and litur-gical dances. This is a show you don’t want to miss! Show times are: Feb25 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Oak Hill Middle School Theatre.

The agriculture classes of Bradley K.Hall at Baldwin High School are benefit-ting from a grant received by the school.

The grant, from Briggs & Stratton, pro-vides students with an engine of Briggs &Stratton’s choice, a 4-cycle Theory DVD,and a case of repair manuals for thedonated engine.

The Briggs & Stratton Basic TrainingStarter Kit will allow students practicewith practical disassembly and learningmaintenance routines. This will providethem with experience diagnosing prob-lems and learning repair techniques.

This kit is Briggs & Stratton’s tradition-al Engine Donation Program. Once everythree years, a school may apply for andreceive one of Briggs & Stratton’s enginesat no charge.
