Principal’s Corner

As It is amazing how quickly this year is flying by. As the days get warmer and the summer approaches please remember to dress your child accordingly. Also please revisit arrival and dismissal expectations with your child. We have had several students due to the warm weather get distracted and do not reach their destination in the time permitted. Instead they end up the park or a neighbor's house with very frantic parents. Make sure that your child checks in before playing outside.

A huge thank you to the parents and families for joining us at the Math Night. You are all amazing, and we could not be as successful as we are without all of your support! Your time and effort are greatly appreciated. Thank you to our incredible students. Your enthusiasm, healthy risk-taking, and hard work make it a complete joy to come to work each day. Last, but never least, thank you to the teachers and staff of Alexander School for supporting our students. I am fortunate to be a part of this amazing school family!

Muchísimas gracias a los padres y familias por acompañarnos en la Noche de Matemáticas. ¡Todos ustedes son increíbles, y no podríamos ser tan exitosos como lo somos sin todo su apoyo! Su tiempo y esfuerzo son muy apreciados. Gracias, también, a nuestros estudiantes. Su entusiasmo, su buena voluntad de tomar riesgos y su trabajo arduo hacen que sea una alegría venir al trabajo todos los días. Second and Third Grade Level Spotlight

Grades 2-3 have been working hard to hone their research skills in order to write argumentative essay. They have spent a great deal of time finding out many wonderful and exciting facts about the Community and Marine Life. Through the use of technology, they have become experts at identifying “fake news” vs. credible sources. They are also working on the layout of the essay in order to properly display their information. Please ask your students how their essay is going and share your expertise to make their essays extra special.

Students Visit a Pop Up Museum

On March 12, Alexander Kindergarten and First grade students in the NCCP After School Enrichment Program attended the Kohl Children’s Museum Pop Up experience at Urban Edge Art Gallery in Waukegan. The pop-up museum features parts of the Animal Secrets exhibit, an art studio, various STEM-based play (including Air-Mazing and Imagination Playground), a book nook and puppet theatre. The students enjoyed painting, acting in puppet shows, building with giant foam blocks, and exploring specimens as naturalists. The highlight of the trip was the Air Mazing station – a series of tubes connected to air compressors that transport puff balls throughout a maze! Students enjoyed making guesses about which tube their puff ball would fall from, and then testing their theory! All students enjoyed an afternoon of fun-filled, hands-on discovery!

Los Alumnos Visitan un Museo

El 12 de marzo, los estudiantes de kínder y primer grado del After School Enrichment Program de NCCP asistieron al museo temporal de Kohl Children’s Museum en la galería de arte “Urban Edge” en Waukegan. El museo emergente presenta partes de la exhibición Animal Secrets, un estudio de arte, varios juegos basados en STEM (incluyendo Air-Mazing and Imagination Playground), un rincón de libros y un teatro de títeres. Alexander Students go on an Egg Hunt!

On April 16th, 120 students from the After School Enrichment Program at Evelyn Alexander and Forrestal Elementary Schools visited Christ Church Lake Forest for a Spring Adventure. The students were welcomed by volunteers and escorted to the performance stage where they viewed a short video about the story of Easter. After watching the movie, the students lined up with their classrooms and each one received a colorful bag the egg hunt activity. Each student was to collect 12 eggs during their hunt. Each egg was filled with treasures like smarties candies, rings, and other treasures. Small Easter bunnies and stickers were spread around the grounds and students were to grab the sticker of their choice and one Easter bunny. The weather was perfect to be outdoors and enjoy a freeze pop at the end of their egg hunt. The highlight of the day for many students was petting two real bunnies! The bunnies were “so fluffy” according to one excited first grader! Evelyn Alexander and Forrestal Elementary students enjoyed their time at Christ Church Lake Forest and look forward to visiting their friends there again soon!

Los Estudiantes de Alexander van a Una Caza de Huevos!

El 16 de abril, 120 estudiantes del After School Enrichment Program de las Escuelas Evelyn Alexander y Forrestal visitaron la iglesia Christ Church Lake Forest para una aventura de primavera. Los estudiantes fueron recibidos por voluntarios y vieron un breve video sobre la historia de la Pascua. El clima estaba perfecto para estar al aire libre y los estudiantes disfrutaron de una paleta al final de su búsqueda de huevos. ¡Muchos estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de acariciar a dos conejitos reales! ¡Un estudiante de primer grado emocionado dijo que los conejitos se sintieron "muy suavecitos "! Los estudiantes de disfrutaron de su tiempo en Christ Church Lake Forest y esperan visitar a sus amigos allí de nuevo pronto.

Month of the Military Child

April marks the Month of the Military Child nationwide. This is an important time to pause, recognize, and honor our military children for the challenges they face and the sacrifices they make. D187 is home to over 200 military connected students. NCCP created a curriculum to help educate and engage students on the importance of this month in our school district. Among the crafts and activities created, students had the option to create a dandelion painting. The dandelion is symbolic of military children because both travel where the wind takes them and put down roots in any soil. Both are hearty, resilient, and bright. District staff showed support for military children by wearing NCCP-created purple ribbons which were distributed at staff meetings. NCCP is honored to support our military families in our school community.

Mes del Niño Militar

Abril marca el Mes del Niño Militar a nivel nacional. Este es un momento importante para hacer una pausa, reconocer y honrar a nuestros niños militares por los desafíos que enfrentan y los sacrificios que hacen. D187 es hogar de más de 200 estudiantes conectados con el ejercito militar. NCCP creó un plan de estudios para ayudar a educar e involucrar a nuestros estudiantes sobre la importancia de este mes en nuestro distrito escolar. Entre las artesanías y actividades creadas, los estudiantes tuvieron la opción de hacer una pintura de la flor diente de león. El diente de león es un símbolo de los niños militares porque ambos viajan a donde el viento los lleva y hacen raíces en cualquier suelo. Ambos son abundantes, resistentes y brillantes. El personal del distrito mostró apoyo a los niños militares al usar cintas de color púrpura creadas por NCCP que fueron distribuidas en las reuniones del personal. Spring Break Reading Challenge

To encourage students and families to read during out-of-school time, North Chicago Community Partners distributed a bag of books to every child in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade on March 19. In addition to books from our friends at Bernie’s Book Bank, each bag contained a tracking form for a Spring Break Reading Challenge. Any student who spent time reading during break, tracked the books they read and returned the completed form was eligible to participate in a “congratulations” raffle. We are excited to report that more than 100 students embraced the challenge and read almost 44,000 pages during Spring Break!

Desafío de Lectura Durante las Vacaciones de Primavera

Para animar a los estudiantes y las familias a leer durante el tiempo fuera de la escuela, North Chicago Community Partners distribuyó una bolsa de libros a todos los niños desde el grado preescolar hasta quinto grado el 19 de marzo. Tobias Comes Back to Alexander

iTobias has two more visits planned at Evelyn Alexander School this year. Tobias will visit the students in Ms. Gaylor’s, Ms. Guzman’s and Ms. Strauss’ classes on April 29th, and Ms. Morgan’s, Ms. Beach and Mr. Tamayo’s class on May 20th. Tobias encourages all Alexander students to read, especially books about dogs!

Military Connected Coffee

On Tuesday, April 16th, NCCP hosted our last Military Connected Coffee event of the 2018-2019 school year. These events are a way for military spouses and families to connect and fellowship over a cup of coffee in a supportive environment. A Continental breakfast, a small gift, and an activity to make and take are provided for each guest. This month, guests were invited to create an Epsom salt bath soak to take home and soak away their stresses. Because April is the Month of the Military Child, guests were encouraged to create a jar of bubbles, scented like bubble gum and dyed purple, for their children. Purple is the official color of the Month of the Military Child. April attendees were joined by Mr. John Price, Superintendent, who had rich conversations with parents about learning and plans for the district. NCCP looks forward to connecting with more Military Families in the 2019-2020 school year!

Cafecito para Padres con Conexión Militar

El martes 16 de abril, NCCP celebro el último evento titulado “Military Coffee Connected Coffee” del año escolar 2018-2019. Estos eventos son una manera para que los cónyuges y familias militares se conecten y creen amistades a través de una taza de café en un ambiente relajado. Se ofrece un desayuno continental, un pequeño regalo y una actividad para que cada invitado haga. Este mes, los invitados fueron animados a crear una jarrita de sal de Epsom para llevarse a casa y aliviar su estrés. Debido a que abril es el Mes del Niño Militar, se alentó a los invitados a crear una jarrita de burbujas, perfumadas como goma de mascar y teñidas de púrpura, para sus hijos. El púrpura es el color oficial del Mes del Niño Militar. Además, Mr. John Price, Superintendente del Distrito, visito el evento y tuvo conversaciones enriquecedoras con los padres sobre el aprendizaje y los planes para el distrito. ¡NCCP espera conectarse con más familias de militares en el año escolar 2019-2020!

Alexander Students Visit a Brain Lab!

The third-grade students in the After School Enrichment Program had the unique opportunity to visit Dr. Shubhik and his students in the brain lab at Lake Forest College. The third-grade students were captivated by the hands-on approach and learned what a fascinating organ the brain is. They enjoyed being immersed in the college experience and instantly transformed into scientists as soon as they put on a white lab coat, goggles and rubber gloves. The third-grade students were able to examine human organs through a microscope and even had the opportunity to touch brains. This field trip was fascinating and ignited a desire for many future scientists at Evelyn Alexander School.

Los Estudiantes de Alexander Visitan un Laboratorio Cerebral!

Los estudiantes de tercer grado en el After School Enrichment Program tuvieron la oportunidad única de visitar al Dr. Shubhik y sus estudiantes en el laboratorio cerebral de Lake Forest College. Los estudiantes de tercer grado se sintieron cautivados por el enfoque práctico y aprendieron qué órgano tan fascinante es el cerebro. Disfrutaron de la inmersión en la experiencia universitaria y se transformaron instantáneamente en científicos tan pronto como se pusieron una bata blanca de laboratorio, lentes y guantes. Forester Day of Service 2019

On April 13, 2019, nearly 400 kindergarten – fifth grade students of North Chicago attended a specially designed enrichment day done through collaboration between North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) and Lake Forest College (LFC). 2019 marked the eighth annual Forester Day of Service, where over 200 LFC students paired up with North Chicago students to deliver this year’s enrichment theme centered on “North Chicago University”. Students experienced a series of activities that were designed to inspire them in their pursuit of being college and career ready. North Chicago students learned new vocabulary words through a game of bingo and explored college and career skills through collaboration, communication and problem-solving STEM builds and games. Many students said they were excited to plan for college and good careers!

Día de Servicio Annual “Forester” del 2019

El 13 de abril de 2019, casi 400 estudiantes de kindergarten a quinto grado de North Chicago asistieron a un día de enriquecimiento realizado mediante la colaboración entre North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) y Lake Forest College (LFC). En particular, este año marcó el octavo Día Anual de Servicio de Forester, donde más de 200 estudiantes de LFC se unieron a los estudiantes de North Chicago para ofrecer el tema de enriquecimiento centrado en la “Universidad de North Chicago”. Los estudiantes experimentaron una serie de actividades que fueron diseñadas para inspirarlos a estar listos para la universidad y una carrera en el futuro. Wedding Bells and Babies…

It is an exciting time at Evelyn Alexander School! The Evelyn Alexander Staff surprised the two mothers-to-be and three brides-to-be with a baby shower/ bridal shower. Congratulations to Ms. Guthrie, Ms. Lara and Ms. Maxwell on their upcoming weddings, and to Ms. Nedza and Ms. Beach as they welcome their babies. Ms. Westphal welcomed a healthy and precious baby boy into the world on April 12.

ST Math at Alexander

As you may know, we have just implemented a new Math Extension of Learning program called ST Math. This program puts students in a situation that expects them to think deeply about math. Students are given the opportunity to make mistakes and reflect in order to grow. Additionally, all students are highly engaged by the differentiated approach and video-game like platform. Please encourage your student to use it at. This will help to bridge the gap and improve learning.
