Jesus loves me! This I know,As He loved so long ago,Taking children on His knee,Saying, "Let them come to Me."

Jesus loves me still today,Walking with me on my way,Wanting as a friend to giveLight and love to all who live.

Jesus loves me! He who diedHeaven's gate to open wide;He will wash away my sin,Let His little child come in.

Jesus loves me! He will stayClose beside me all the way;Thou hast bled and died for me,I will henceforth live for Thee

In Him, Chrissie

Did you ever wonder what all those things are called on the altar that weuse during communion? I ran a series on this over a year ago, I think it's agood time for review!

Ablution:Ablution:

Liturgical and ceremonial cleaning of the paten and chalice with water, orwith water and wine, following the communion of the people at the HolyEucharist. If the consecrated bread and wine are not reserved for later use, they are consumed by the ordained and lay ministers of the eucharist eitherafter the communion of the people or after the dismissal. The ablutions mayalso include the cleaning of the celebrant's fingers before and aftercommunion, depending on the liturgical custom of the congregation.

Fraction:Fraction:

The breaking of the consecrated bread for distribution by the celebrant atthe eucharist. The fraction also recalls Christ's body as broken for us andour salvation. The breaking of the bread follows the eucharistic prayer andthe Lord's Prayer and is accompanied by a period of silence. A fractionanthem, or confractorium, may also be sung or said after the breaking ofthe bread. The fraction is followed by the celebrant's invitation tocommunion and the administration of communion. The 1662 English PrayerBook directed the celebrant to break the bread at the words "he brake it" inthe institution narrative of the eucharistic prayer. The direction of this rubricwas continued by American Prayer Books through the 1928 BCP. Thebreaking of the bread was restored to its traditional place in the 1979 BCP,after the eucharistic prayer and immediately before the communion of thepeople.

ReflectionsReflectionsWHO, ME?WHO, ME?

Here is a great story by Billy D. Strayhorn, shared through Sermons.com. that makes a point with which I think wecould all identify. He writes, "Unfortunately, most of us act like the out-of

Page 13: community of disciples, a house of with the city in its ...gracebythesea.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Newsletter-11-June-2017.pdfJun 11, 2017  · June 15 Steve & Cecilia Roberts

shape, overweight man who decided to take up tennis. He took lessons froma pro. He read several self-help books which advised him to 'thinkpositively' and 'develop a winning attitude.'"

"A friend asked him how his tennis was going. With a positive, winningattitude in his voice, the man replied, 'When my opponent hits the ball tome, my brain immediately barks out a command to my body: 'Race up tothe net.' Then, it says, 'Slam a blistering shot to a far corner of the court. Then immediately jump back into position and return the next volley to theother far corner of the court.' And then my body says, 'Who, me?'"

The Eleven went to Galilee just as Jesus had commanded them (MT 28.16-20), and it was easy for them to do so because it really meant returninghome (for most of them). It was also easy to obey someone who has justbeen resurrected from the dead (with such a one, you might conclude, it isnot a good idea to find yourself at odds). But they were not yet a unitedgroup (cf vs.17), at least in terms of their apprehension of Jesus, and this, remarkably so in spite of His resurrection appearances (with difficult thingswe all need some time to process our thoughts and emotions). In any case,it is to this group of disciples that Jesus came (as promised) and giveswhat we have all come to call "the Great Commission". Easy has passed, hard has arrived.

Picking up again Strayhorn's story, he writes, "I'd be willing to bet, if wecould go back in time, that the first words out of the mouths of all theDisciples after Jesus spoke these words were the same: 'Who, me?' Youhave to remember that the events of this passage actually took place beforePentecost and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. But the question is stillpertinent. 'Who, me?'"

Who in their right mind might ask such a question? The Urban Dictionaryactually helps us understand this question by defining it as "A phrase usedby ignorant people either to deflect a question (or commandment) that theywere not prepared to answer (or fulfill), or because they are in anuncomfortable situation that is beyond their grasp."

I am not sure I can accept that the disciples were ignorant people at all, simply because they may well have asked this question. After all, I haveheard this question asked by some very intelligent people, and I have askedthis question (perhaps not out loud) myself! So have you!

To be sure, whenever I am reminded that I stand under the command to"go therefore and make disciples" I sense the question, "who, me", risingup within me along with all my ready-made arguments based on my owninsufficiencies, inadequacies (and as many other "cies" as I can muster) inan attempt to deflect attention away from my own responsibility to stand atthe ready. Yes, I sometimes allow myself to feel uncomfortable and I havecertainly considered I am being asked to do something that is beyond mycapability. In reality, however, none of this is true. My basic problem is

Page 14: community of disciples, a house of with the city in its ...gracebythesea.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Newsletter-11-June-2017.pdfJun 11, 2017  · June 15 Steve & Cecilia Roberts

understanding the Great Commandment in the wrong way, as if the onlyway of fulfilling my responsibilities is to grab a soap box and find a cornerupon which to stand and pontificate.

In point of fact, what I am being asked to do is be a true disciple myself(there is the hard part) and then allow His life to flow out of me as agenuine expression of my love, joy and commitment. It is my life in Himthat is to become my primary message, and it is in sharing my life withothers that others come to be discipled. What I say and what I do becomepowerful reflections of what He has done for me and in me and they areshared with others, not because I am commanded to do so (I am), butbecause I simply cannot contain or hide His life within me. And this is nothard to understand, because we have all experienced it in sharing about thebirth of a son or daughter or grand-child. We were not coerced, neither werewe obligated. Sharing flowed from our obvious delight. The really hardquestion for us to answer then, is quite simple. Is Jesus our delight?

How We've Misunderstood "Do Thisin Remembrance of Me" Right before Jesus' death, he instituted aspecial meal for his church to observe.Historically, this meal was called the Eucharist, which means "thanksgiving." Often today wecall it communion or the Lord's Supper. Although churches differ on howfrequently we should take communion, the universal consensus amongChristians is that this meal is an important part of our faith.
