We welcome your opinion Site preparation to commence for the Wellness and Respite Community Centre The prospect of having a Wellness and Respite Community Centre (the centre) in Manjimup in the not-too-distant future will soon become a visual reality, with stage one works to commence onsite at the beginning of May.

The centre is a multifunctional hub of services and facilities, which will support ageing in place and enable seniors, frail-aged persons, people with disabilities, people with dementia and their carers to live independent and fulfilling lives. It will be located in Manjimup on what is commonly known as 'Peace Park', bordered by Mount Street, Rose Street, Edwards Street and Bath Street.

Shire President Paul Omodei explained that though there has been so much support for the project from the community, as well as funding support received through both State and Federal programs which will see the project completed in its entirety, it only starts to become real once people see things happening onsite.

“The commencement of stage one is monumental and represents a very exciting time for our community,” said Cr Omodei. “It is a reminder that very soon, a building will start to materialise, which will house a facility that is set to change the dynamics of our region forever by providing additional services that will help people age in place.”

Work that will be conducted during stage one includes the clearing of trees to accommodate the development, site remediation, site preparation and drainage.

The project started to eventuate in late 2014 when the Shire dedicated $300,000 to the construction of the centre and then received $750,000 of federal HACC funding. This was followed by an announcement of a further $1,044,000 of Lotterywest grant money in August of 2015 for the same purpose. In addition, the Southern Inland Health Initiative and Royalties for Regions chipped in $92,021 and $249,365 respectively, which was capped off by a Federal contribution of $1,610,310 through the National Stronger Regions Fund.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 2 March 2017, the tender for the design and construction of the centre was awarded and a project team is now working on finalising the design while the initial site works take place.

Gardening Australia visits Tree Top Walk ‘Gardening Australia’ made a recent visit to the Tree Top Walk to learn more about the flora and fauna at one of the State’s most popular tourism attractions.

As a leading ABC program, ‘Gardening Australia’ provides practical and credible horticultural and gardening advice, inspiring and entertaining all Australian gardeners around the nation.

Parks and Wildlife regional parks and visitor services leader Tim Foley said that Josh Byrne, the presenter on the show, didn’t need too much of an excuse to visit the region he grew up in and seemed very much at home wandering around the tingle forest.

“Tree Top Walk staff member Julie Ewing gave the crew a guided tour of the site showcasing the majestic tingle trees and flora which inspired the design for the walk,” Tim said.

“The crew filmed the site from all angles from above and below the walk and along the Ancient Empire getting up close to the giants of the forest.

“Particular focus was made of the slipper orchid, Grandma Tingle and the impact of fire on the tingle trees.

“The crew loved the feeling of being totally immersed in nature at the site and the role the Tree Top Walk played in protecting the environment while allowing visitors to explore the Valley of the Giants.

“We welcome many media visitors and programs to the Tree Top Walk and the positive exposure we get after their visit is fantastic for the facility and the district.”

The Tree Top Walk feature is scheduled to appear on Gardening Australia in the near future.”

BTH STATUS……. Recent rulings with regard to the adaptation of new laws for incorporation have been carefully considered by the members of the BTH Ladies Club. Necessary changes and most importantly the increased cost over all of Insurance have resulted in the members' decision to relinquish incorporation to enter into a new chapter in the life of the Club and continue simply as a social group.

This decision has been followed through and finalised, which means that all monies and assets have been donated to appropriate areas.

The BTH Ladies Club began in May 1961 as a social outlet for women of the three districts…...Bow Bridge, Tingledale and Hazelvale. Over the years members became a strong catering service in the district. The most memorable of the catering commitments was the provision of meals on site for six weeks for a film crew in the making of the documentary River of Giants.

The group have raised thousands of dollars for charitable organisations (mainly local). A recipe book was compiled in 1982 and revised in 2008. The proceeds of the latter were donated to the Walpole and Districts Seniors Accommodation and the Silver Chain. To mark the 50th anniversary in 2011, the ladies produced a history of the club. Members have enjoyed the friendship and the many activities open to them and look forward to continuing this involvement.

Probably the most successful function of the group has been the annual Soup and Sandwich fundraiser for Cancer. This day has become an important part of the social calendar in the district and it is estimated that more than $10,000 has been handed over to the Cancer Council.

Members intend to continue organising this event (as money is deposited straight into the Cancer Council) which will be held on the first Friday in June...so watch this space!

ALIVE TO ANZAC

Over the fence last week our neighbour and I exchanged seasons greetings, and as we often do, had a yarn. He told me that he and others would be carrying out a controlled burn around the Walpole Cemetery. “I hope the sleeping will not be disturbed,” I quipped, and upon seeing his puzzled look, quickly explained the word cemetery means, ‘sleeping place’.

I found myself once again that week explaining my words, this time, while in Walpole loading my shopping trolley with vegetables. On hearing my name I spun around to take hold of the outstretched hand of a friend greeting me and I responded with “Happy Easter” but his reply revealed he considered Easter now well and truly over, that its used-by-date for this year had expired. I assured him Easter has a six week shelf life, even if the commercial trappings of the season were gone and the business world was rushing on.

Six weeks or forty days to be precise and I recon we need every one of those days to grasp the implications of “Christ is risen from the dead!”

For as Luke records “After his suffering Jesus presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.” (Acts, 1:3)

Our neighbourly conversation over the fence that morning moved on from burning bushland to discussing the current French elections and the growing phenomenon within that Nation, indeed, other nations as well, of polarised political positions threatening to shut down hard won freedoms. For me, one of the implications of Easter’s empty tomb is it shouts liberty — liberty over all forms of deprivation.

Dark forces are attempting to corral humanity back into the tomb of oppression, sealing the entrance with the stone of tyranny, and binding the human spirit in grave cloths of decay — did it not almost succeed early last century? ANZAC values will be remembered this week and the highest of these is sacrifice. As Australians who fought for traditions informing and forming our national identify, we are alive and fully awake to identify the creeping shadows of deprivation threatening our democracy; knowing, that the darkness cannot overcome the light of life!

- Geoffrey Newby

Visitors drawn to the Tree Top Walk Substantial crowds attended the Tree Top Walk during the Easter long weekend resulting in a significant boost for the local economy.

Department of Parks and Wildlife Regional Manager Luke Bentley said over the four-days, the Tree Top Walk staff welcomed 5,480 people, an increase of 8 percent on the historical average figures for Easter.

“It’s great to see a busy Easter at the Tree Top Walk as the healthy visitation provides valuable dollars to support maintenance and upgrades across our parks in the region,” Mr Bentley said.

“It appears that more people and tourists are venturing out of Perth to experience some of the national parks in the regions.

“Parks and Wildlife has again run a very successful and highly subscribed holiday activity program during the school holidays. Some of the more popular activities include a Forest by Night walk, bug hunt, bush art and a kid’s twilight tour.

“The recent launch of the new South West NatureGuide app has also seen many visitors ‘take a walk with a local expert’ on their phone - in their own time and at sites where there are no guides available.

“The app contains more than 120 entries on local flora, fauna, history and geology with the number of trails and entries set to grow in the future.

“Whether you are standing near a plant or a magnificent old tree, overlooking an expansive view, or looking out for wildlife, you can learn about the natural world around you with the NatureGuide helping you along the way.”

Other sites where the app can be used include William Bay, King Jarrah, the Giant Tingle Tree, Horseyard Hill and the three climbing trees in Pemberton and Manjimup.

Mr Bentley said the Easter success was the result of a great team effort from staff and the local tourism industry who have created memorable holiday experiences for visitors.

We do remember them…

For many Walpolians ANZAC Day began with the Dawn Service at the Peaceful Bay War Memorial overlooking the ocean and a spectacular, if a bit chilly, sunrise. The day continued with the mid morning service and fly-over at the Walpole War Memorial where the choir led by Liz Edmonds sang like angels.

Life in Pictures Earlier this year the Department of Local Government and Communities (DLGC) launched Life in Pictures, a competition inviting film makers from all sections of the WA community to challenge perceptions of ageing using the medium of short film.

The initiative is a creative collaboration between the DLGC, Revelation Perth International Film Festival and Screenwest, with endorsement from the World Health Organisation and International Federation on Ageing.

It encourages people – the film makers and the viewers – to stop and think about how society views growing older while aiming to stimulate discussion about ageing in a positive way. Entries close 31 May 2017. Entries are open to organisations and individuals.

There is quite a substantial prize pool, and winning films will also be screened as part of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival in July this year.

A long-proposed 40mW biomass plant would give security to the region’s forestry industry for at least 25 years, it is being claimed.

The Manjimup power plant would burn plantation residue and could secure the town’s energy needs.

It would also power up to 60,000 homes and be operational by the end of 2019 if successful in getting financing approved by the end of this year.

“We are pretty confident and doing everything we can to see it come to that conclusion,” WA Biomass director Richard Harris said.

“There is still a lot of work to do, we don’t want to underestimate that.”

There would be about 300 jobs provided at the peak of construction with an estimated 50 jobs, including maintenance workers, once it was operational.

Mr Harris said it had been estimated the power station would put an extra 100 forestry industry jobs into the South West.

“This gives certainty to the plantation forestry sector for at least 25 years,” he said.

“The industry is not doing badly at the moment due to exports but the biomass plant will underpin that.

“There’s nothing to say the plant couldn’t last 30 to 40 years based on fuel supply, we’ve done resource estimates and there is enough plantation waste for that 40-year time-frame.”

Mr Harris said fuel for the power station would be sourced from within 100km of the site, including the waste – branches, stumps and tips – from plantation harvest.

He stressed the proponent’s appreciation to the Manjimup Shire Council, Manjimup Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the community for their support during the project.

“It’s taken longer than we would have liked, these projects are never as simple as we’d like,” he said.

Forward works have already started at the plant’s Diamond Mill location, with an area of about 5ha set

Manjimup’s BIOMASS plan powers up

aside for the power station and timber fuel stockyard, with the possibility of other industries co-locating at the site.

The power station is expected to have a two-year build period and if all goes to plan, should be ready for commissioning in mid-2019.

Budget to deliver telehealth boost for rural psychological services People living in rural and remote regions of Australia will get the same access to psychologists as those living in our major cities, under a new telehealth initiative set to roll out later this year.

A major barrier to rural residents accessing vital mental health treatment will be removed with the introduction of a new Medicare rebate for online video conferencing consultations with psychologists.

Under the new arrangements, up to seven of the ten sessions currently available under Medicare rebatable mental health plans will be available via telehealth.

The initiative is the first to be rolled out following the announcement of the Regional Australia Ministerial Taskforce, chaired by the Prime Minister.

Many rural people who were likely going untreated will now receive appropriate care as a result.

From November 1, people in rural and regional Australia will be able to claim a Medicare rebate for timely and convenient online videoconferencing consultations with psychologists and other health professionals who might be thousands of kilometres away.

No longer will they have the inconvenience, time and expense of having to travel to larger regional centres or major cities for sessions with their psychologist.

Health professionals will be able to connect sooner and more regularly with patients in need of psychological services.

This initiative will cost $9 million over four years from 2017–18 to 2020–21.

President of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, Dr Ewen McPhee, said early intervention in acute mental health crisis can assist a patient in getting better more quickly.

“There is no doubt that enhanced access to psychological services will help narrow the gap in health equity for rural people,” Dr McPhee said.

“Rural people are stoic. They often do the hard yards in face of the vagaries of the weather, remoteness and the rural economy. When the going is tough it's good to know they can access the same care as city folk.

“Rural suicide rates have never been higher, and this is an important investment by the Coalition in the health of all rural Australians.”

The demand for psychological services in rural and regional Australia is growing – but a key barrier to accessing services is the scarcity of professional mental health professionals in some areas.

Bargain and produce stall. Entry by gold coin donation.

The Medicare rebatable psychological services via telehealth will be available for patients living in Modified Monash Model regions four to seven, which cover smaller country towns and remote and very remote locations.

This will ensure that the services go to areas with the biggest access challenges, not to larger regional centres that are more likely to have resident psychologists and other health professionals.

We know that people living in rural and regional areas often have reduced access to health care.

They have to travel greater distances to receive medical services, experience higher rates of ill health, and demonstrate higher death, illness and health and disease risk factors than people living in major cities.

The Coalition Government is committed to bridging the city–country divide in providing access to health services around this nation.

Sailing

Maree Pickett was awarded the Lloyd Burnside ‘Club Person of the Year’ honor this year, and was presented with her trophy on Sunday March 26th by Lloyd himself.

Lloyd praised Maree’s efforts as the clubs Commodore over the last two years. This trophy was presented at the last formal sailing day of the year for the club. A well deserved round of applause was dedicated to Maree post presentation, from club members. Maree thanked all club members, including the junior sailors for all their fantastic efforts over the year and wished the incoming Committee well for the coming year.

His most recent project is an album for the HUSH Foundation. The project is centred on songs written by Lior in collaboration with Sydney based vocal group ‘The Idea of North’ and composer Elena Katz Churnin. The lyrics are based on answers to questions delivered to sick young kids at the Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital Cancer Ward. The HUSH project has a dual purpose of both creating music to provide a better environment in the wards as well as raise funds for these wards.

Also on the bill is Charles Maimarosia, a contemporary musician born and raised in the remote Pipisu village of the Solomon Islands. Charles developed a profound interest in ancient Are'Are music at a young age after inheriting his first coconut shell ukulele from his father. He later began performing amongst his community, communicating traditional songs of his ancestors with hand-crafted pan pipes. Now living in Victoria, he has found a unique bridge between ancestral pan pipe music and contemporary sounds, which he performs solo at festivals and venues around Australia. He holds a strong sense of simplicity and grace in his solo performances as he communicates the ancient stories of his ancestors, in language.
