A Message from

Mayor Kathy Sajowitz

In the April edition of the Community Newsletter I stated that the NSW Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Oberon would be attending a meeting in town to talk candidates through the actual formal election process, procedures and requirements. I have been advised by the NSWEC that this will not occur this election. Prospective Candidates are invited to join a webinar hosted by the NSWEC and running from April to September which will inform them of the election process. To join the webinar please go to the NSWEC Website.

In 2017 council resolved five votes to three to apply to the NSW Department of Health seeking fluoridation of the Oberon reticulated water supply. Approval was given in September 2018 in accordance with Section 6 of the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 1957, and fluoridation commenced from 30 March 2021.

Over the past two years council has undertaken an enormous amount of infrastructure projects. We are thankful to both the Federal and NSW Governments for the grant support enabling many of these projects. To highlight but a few - the upgrade of the Campbells River Road will be completed by the end of this year and work will commence around October, weather permitting, on the upgrade of the entire length of Lowes Mount Road. This is part of the $13million Tablelands Way Project to be undertaken jointly by Oberon, Lithgow and Upper Lachlan councils. Nunans Hill Road is scheduled for upgrade within the next month or so. Later this year/early next year work will commence on the Burraga and Arkstone

Roads upgrade. The Community Hub project to upgrade the Library and Community Centre is at the design and construct stage and the build should be completed by June 2022. The new Sporting Precinct replacing the Football Ground and Netball Courts on Lowes

Mount Road is currently going through the planning and consultation phase, the DA has been lodged and due to the fact that council is the applicant, it will be assessed independently by the Joint Regional Planning Panel.

Just a reminder that I am always available to speak with residents about their concerns. You can ring Sharon Swannell 6329 8151 to set up a mutually convenient time. If I am unable to assist you, I will endeavour to find someone who can.

The Oberon Health Council meets once per month at the MPS (hospital) and acts as a liaison between the Oberon Community and Local/Regional Health Authorities, works with our health professionals, and promotes health initiatives and programs for the benefit of all. The Council is made up of community representatives and medical professionals. If this volunteer role interests you please contact Elaine Boxer on 6336 0441 for further information. A medical background is not a pre requisite. This is a rewarding role and so beneficial to our community. I would particularly encourage Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islanders to consider applying for representation on the Health Council – this is an under represented demographic without a current voice on the Health Council but with so much to offer. Please think about becoming involved.

The changeover from our current street lights to LED technology will commence in the near future. Oberon resolved many years ago to participate in the Southern Lights Program through the Central NSW Joint Organisation. The use of this technology will result in substantial energy cost savings for the Council, while delivering a high quality white light, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of our public lighting. Essential Energy will be delivering the project for Oberon.

Great news for the Oberon community with the Fixing Local Roads announcement of funding of more than $3.95 million for restoration work on Arkstone Road and Burraga Road.

Ensuring better connectivity for residents in regional areas is a priority for the NSW Government and I know this funding won’t just help ease the burden of maintenance on Oberon Council, it will also deliver safer, more reliable journeys for all road users.

Better maintained roads means safer trips to school, to work and to the shops – and support from the NSWGovernment really does help councilsto create and support jobs and driveproductivity.

This funding follows on from the Fixing Country Bridges Program which provided a $797,590 windfall for Oberon Council to replace two, old wooden bridges.

As a result, the Swallows Next Bridge ($422,800) and Bald Ridge Road Bridge ($374,790) can be replaced with safer, modern structures that are sure to stand the test of time.

European Wasps are active in the Oberon area. At this time of the year, the queen European wasps are mating and getting ready to hibernate for the winter. An effective trap to capture the queen wasps is the traps that were used in spring but containing apple juice not honey and water. They are looking for the carbs to fatten up and sleep through the cold weather. Traps can be made using a plastic milk or juice bottle. Simply cut some “windows” toward the top of the container and partly fill with apple juice or cut the top off the plastic bottle and invert it into the bottom section. The queens will be attracted to

the juice and once inside are unable to climb out again. They particularly love fermented juice so the older it is the more they like it. Remember European wasps look like bees but are distinctive due to their black antennae, bees have yellow or brown (see image above for reference). To report your sightings and trapping of the wasps and for more information on how to make home made traps, visit www.wasppatrol.info or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/WaspPatrol
