The camp included days filled with games, skits, team challenges, self-dis- covery, and community volunteering. Each Carlton senior spent the week with students from a variety of other schools, such as Duluth East, Duluth Denfeld, Moose Lake, Hermantown, Proctor, Superior, Wrenshall, Cloquet, and Esko. Zoe Klimek said that the experience was great because they all learned about themselves, especially being away from everyday friends, where they were put in a position to make new friends by truly being themselves with no expectations. Each group also did various volun- teer work. Jackson Mickle’s group went to The Boys and Girls Club, where he learned the invaluable lesson of char- ity. “Helping the young kids at the Club showed me how sometimes just a little effort on my part can make a big difference for somebody else. It was fun working with those kids, and also rewarding to know I made their day a little brighter.” Jess Anderson said that “SALF was a life-changing experience. I learned valuable skills I’ll be able to use for the rest of my life. I learned things about myself, and I made unforget- table memories and long-lasting friendships.” Maddie Bailey said, “SALF was valuable in more than one way. It happens during a time in our lives when we are confused about who we are and are uncertain about our future. This camp helped us learn things about ourselves that we didn’t know before. It also helped us realize that everyone has stories deeper than what we can see. Lastly, it taught us that it is possible to work as a team with anyone. It was an amazing opportunity.” Senior Jaryd Soukkala spent his summer taking the first steps in serving his country. He began Basic Training in Fort Benning, Georgia, on June 11 and graduates on August 24 as a member of the US Army 11 Bravo Infantry. He will continue with monthly drills and will go back to Fort Benning next summer for AIT Infantry training. After that, Jaryd plans on continuing for four more years with the option to reenlist. Jaryd chose the military because he was self-driven to make a difference and honor those who’ve served before him. Jaryd admits the hard- est thing this summer has been working in full gear in Georgia’s record heat, but he has enjoyed and excelled at target shooting. Overall he has liked the challenges he has faced. Jaryd’s mom, Lissa Soukkala said, “I am beyond proud. I’ve shed my fair share of tears through it all, but could not be more proud of the young man he has become.” The Carlton community shares this pride! Thank you, Jaryd. For a week in July, Deanna Wallin attended a business learning opportunity at the University of MN/Carlson School of Management in Minneapolis. “Gopher Business” takes place at Carlson School of Management each year. This year, it brought 57 high achieving, diverse students from around the country to campus. The participants got a closer look at business processes through classes on specific fields and visits to local Twin Cities businesses. Most of their time during the week was spent preparing a presentation for a case competition held on behalf of Volunteers of America. Working in teams, they pre- sented ideas for supporting marketing and fundraising efforts for the organization. 2017 Summer Learning Camp “Adventures for your Brain” July 31 - August 3, 2017

The 2017 Carlton Summer Learning Camp was a huge success once again! There were 29 students in attendance for the four day camp and the theme this year was “Wild about Animals”! The camp attendees enjoyed four action packed, knowledge filled and adventurous days! Thank you to the staff and volunteers that helped to make camp happen: Camp Coordinator Anne Richardson, Camp Instructor Rachel Skillings, Camp Instructor Sam Betcher, Camp Instructor Kari Ries, Camp Volunteer Ben Talarico and Camp Volunteer Yvonne Clampitt. The following is a note from this year’s Camp Coordinator, Anne Richardson: What a week! This year Carlton’s Summer Learning Camp enjoyed a fun-filled, animal-themed week. Students learned about animals and their natural habitats, from the local animals of the north woods to the blubbery animals of the arctic and the feline predators of the savanna. Highlights included meeting a park naturalist and learning about food webs, researching animals of the camper’s choice, and creating animals out of recycled materials. Thank you for another amazing week at Learning Camp!

Another Hot race for the Carlton Daze 5K run/WalkEvery year for the past 25 years the tem-

perature has been quite warm for the Carlton Daze 5K Run/Walk, and this year was no exception. One hundred ninety walkers/runners participated in the race, and were supported by many family and friends. The success of this event is a tribute to the over forty volunteers who take care of registration tables, fill participant bags, set up aid/water stations, direct traffic, volunteer at the finish line, post race results, and take pictures. This event would not happen without the support of family, friends and the volunteers from the community and the MN Ultra Marathon.

Thank you to the Sentence To Serve crew members who came in Thursday morning to help set up tables and chairs, clean the Sports Complex, and help create the displays for the 5K; and the City of Carlton Public Works Department for taking care of signage and making sure the City of Carlton looked great.

This event raised $1000.00 for the Robert C. Rodd Memorial Scholarship Fund. Last year, four - $500.00 scholarships were given to 2017 Carlton High School graduates, Alexander Nykanen, Timothy Jessen, Brittny Hillstrom and Makayla Schubitzke-Rubesh. It was an honor to present the scholarships to these deserving students to continue their

education in memory of Robert Rodd. He believed in the kids of the Carlton Community, and the importance of educa-tion.

Next year the 5K run/walk will cel-ebrate 26 years during the Carlton Daze Celebration. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please call Leola Rodd at 218-384-3697 (leave a message), 218-310-6065 (cell) or email at [email protected].

The 5K Run/Walk Committee also spon-sored Kid’s Races for kids ages 2 to 8. Everyone who participated received a medal, goodie bag and a free tee shirt. This year forty kids participated. Thank you to Ann Gustafson and Ruth Jorgenson for their enthusiasm and dedication to this event. Great job!

Thank you to the Carlton National Honor Society members and Tracy Bockbrader, Adviser, for helping with the Spaghetti Dinner. This fundraiser has become an annual event for the Carlton Daze Celebration.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event run smoothly, and making my last year as race director a memorable one. Thank you for all of the support and dedica-tion for the past 25 years.

The 2017 robert C. rodd memorial Scholarships were awarded to Carlton high School graduates – alexander nykanen, Timothy Jessen, brittny hillstrom and makala Schubitzke-rubesh. Each graduate received $500.00 towards their college and/or technical college education.

Welcome to the start of another school year at

Carlton High School. We are excited about the many opportunities this year prom-ises for helping students learn and grow. A successful school year depends on the collective effort of Carlton school com-munity members working together to serve our school’s primary mission, which is to educate, empower, and inspire all learners. Clear communication and shared purpose provides each member of our school com-munity the best opportunity for a successful experience. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight essential infor-mation to promote a strong start to the new school year.

Attendance proves a primary indicator of classroom success and student achievement. Please be aware of your child’s academic schedule as you plan necessary appoint-ments:

It is essential for students to demonstrate punctuality and be in class and prepared as teachers begin instruction at the scheduled start time. Adhering to consistent atten-dance guidelines promotes student success. After the fourth accumulated unexcused tardy in a grading quarter and each addi-tional 3 unexcused tardy thereafter, students will receive 1-hour of after school deten-tion. If a student accumulates 10 unexcused

tardies in a quarter, a parent meeting will be required to create an attendance plan.

We are also members of the Carlton County Truancy Program, which tracks the attendance of each student within our district. Truancy Officer Josh Hagen meets with school officials and necessary students weekly to ensure students are meeting state compulsory school attendance. If it is nec-essary for a student to miss school, for any length of time, they are to obtain a pass from the high school office and communicate with their instructors. We require students to complete these steps in advance of the absence when possible. All of our efforts

related to student attendance are a result of the strong correlation between attendance, positive school climate and student success.

Attendance, academic performance, and other important information is available through accessing Campus Parent Portal and Schoology, which can be found on our school website (www.carlton.k12.mn.us) under the Quicklinks sidebar. Parents are encouraged to stay current on their child’s progress. Please contact the school office for Parent Portal and Schoology login informa-tion. Additionally, teachers and building administrators invite questions by email or phone and look forward to meeting with parents during parent-teacher conferences or by appointment. The school website is also a great place to find important school information. We understand not all families

have adequate access to the internet, and we are happy to accommodate those families with periodic mailings. Again, please visit or call the high school office if you require mailed academic progress reports.

The high school will continue provid-ing 1:1 blended learning through Samsung tablets. Students will have access to much of their course information through the Learning Management System, Schoology. We are excited about being able to put the most current information and resources at our students’ fingertips and provide addi-tional opportunities to personalize learning and extend learning beyond the classroom. Please review the information provided by Mr. Engen related to the blended learning initiative.

The increased access to digital learning tools and 1:1 tablet technology eliminates the need for other mobile device use during class. Students are encouraged to keep all other mobile devices out of the classroom and are prohibited from using them during class time. Students are still allowed to use their cellphones before and after school and during passing time and lunch. We appreci-ate your support with limiting distractions during instructional time.

We are very excited about starting the 2017-2018 school year. Thank you for your involvement and support in creat-ing an excellent high school experience for Carlton students. Please contact me at high school office (218) 384-4226 with any questions regarding this letter or the upcoming school year.

The 2017-18 school year is here! It is great to have staff and students back in our classrooms and focused on our important work of academics, building rela-tionships and building character.

As you know, I spent much of the summer informing our community about the August 8th Special Election. I am happy to have had the chance to go throughout our district and meet so many community residents. It was important to work with the School Board to be as open as possible about the issues, the ballot questions and the potential impact on property taxes. I was proud to hear so many speak so enthusiastically about Carlton Public Schools, our history, our excellence and their passion to see us grow even stronger.

The 2017 referendum is over, but our urgent facility needs have not gone away. In the next several weeks, the School Board will be addressing imme-diate facility needs in each build-ing, while also making plans to address our longer term need for safe, healthy and inspiring facilities for students and staff.

I will use the school webpage (www.carlton.k12.mn.us) under the Superintendent Updates link to keep community members informed as we move through a systematic but intentional process. We know it is critical that very thoughtful decisions be made as soon as possible. Your input con-tinues to be valued and impor-tant. You can always contact any of our Board members or myself, or you can address all of us during Public Comments which happens at each monthly regu-lar School Board meeting. The next meeting will be Monday, September 18th at 7:00pm in the High School Media Center.

As your superintendent, I am committed to the success of every student. It is my responsi-bility to support Principal Midge and Principal Kotsmith as they provide their important leader-ship with our teachers and stu-dents. I strongly believe in having clear goals for improvement, and teamwork as we problem solve and communicate together.

Thank you for your support of Carlton Public Schools!

SUperINteNDeNtWelcome back to school once again from South Terrace Elementary! I am super excited to be back for a full year of learning and activities with the won-derful students and staff from Carlton School District.

While much stays the same, some do change. I would like to take this time to personally welcome our new staff to South Terrace Elementary and to the community of Carlton. We have 8 new teachers joining our district and adding some new spark to the South Terrace building.

We will have a new Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Beyer who is replacing Mrs. Unzen. Mrs. Beyer has two years of Kindergarten experience teaching at Hinckley prior to joining South Terrace. Originally from the Twin Cities area, we are excited to add Mrs. Beyer to our staff.

Mr. Mattinen will be moving to 3rd grade this year which means, Mr.Frischmann will be our new 4th grade teacher. Mr. Frischmann has numerous years of experience at multiple schools ranging from Red Lake, to South St. Paul. We are pleased to have him on staff this year at South Terrace.

In 5th grade we are adding a section, which necessitated a need for more staff. We have hired Mrs. Lorenz to take on this position this year. Mrs. Lorenz has a wealth of experience in various educational settings throughout the local area, which makes her a great hire for South Terrace.

Our new Special Education teacher will be Ms. Hessian, who has gained experience teaching in Duluth last year as a Special Education teacher. Her experience there will line up well with what we are looking for this year as we go forward at South Terrace Elementary.

Physical Education is also seeing a new face for the first time in a while with the hiring of Ms. Gustafson. She will bring a ton of knowledge and personal experience to this job, as an accomplished

athlete and coach prior to joining South Terrace. She is also the head coach of the Cross Country team for Carlton.

A familiar face, yet new to the staff, will be taking over the Art position with the hire of Mrs. Fellerer, who will be our Resident Expert in the Art Room this year. She will also be taking on other roles within the school for the upcoming year.

Finally, we will have 3 new faces in the Title Room this year. Two are school employees, and the third will be our new Reading Corps. teacher. Please welcome Teresa Swanson as the full-time Title Teacher. She has a number of years in education, but has been pursu-ing other avenues prior to her return this Fall to the classroom. Her partner will be Kara Dahl who has a fresh outlook on education, with some experience having served in various roles in schools prior to South Terrace. Our Reading Corps. member is also a familiar face from our building a year ago, but worked in Early Childhood, Yvonne Clampitt. The focus of our Title staff will be to provide additional Reading and Math Instruction to our K-3 students.

We hope this school year will be great for every-one! There will certainly be issues that arise on occasion, but know that the school is here to work with parents as those issues happen. We will be incor-porating to a greater level our PBIS materials when handling student behaviors, so realize that there is a process and an evaluation going on daily to make South Terrace better all the time. We have a lot to offer students at the K-5 level such as small class sizes, every day Physical Education time that are becoming unique to Carlton and South Terrace Elementary. There are many great experiences to be had at South Terrace, please stop by the office and set up a time to visit our school. We are always looking for volunteers from the community to help our younger generation become the best they can be.

*** Please Note***Wednesday Early Dismissal: Students will be released at 2:48 every Wednesday.

The Carlton football Team attended a 9-man passing tournament in nevis, mn on July 17th. The boys finished the tournament 4th out of 8 teams. The teams that participated in this event included: Nevis, park Christian, Cromwell, Clearbrook-gonvick, verndale, bertha-hewitt, brandon-Evansville, and Carlton. ime, and two controlled scrimmages. it was a great way to wrap up the summer.

The Carlton Football Team attended the first annual 9-man team camp hosted by St. Scholastica on July 29th. The camp included breakdown drills coached by St. Scholastica position coaches, individual team time, and two controlled scrimmages. it was a great way to wrap up the summer.

When a school has been around since 1871, to do anything for the first time is a pretty huge accomplishment. Last spring the Carlton Bulldogs Softball Team made its first appearance ever in the state high school softball tournament. Even more remarkable then making the tournament, was the makeup of the team that did it. A roster that includes no seniors and seven freshman starters is usually considered a rebuilding year, not a state tournament participant, but that’s exactly what the Dogs did. In order to make this happen the girls had to come through the loser’s bracket, winning three games in a day, including a grueling 10-inning win against number one seeded Nashwauk-Keewatin. This set up the section champion-ship, against seven time defending section champion Cherry, who had beaten the Dogs earlier in the tournament, forcing them into

the loser’s bracket. This meant that the Dogs would have to beat Cherry twice in the final in order to move on to the state tourna-ment. No problem. The Bulldogs took the first game 5-4 and then won the nightcap 9-7. At the state tournament in North Mankato, the Dogs faced eventual champion New York Mills in the first round. The Dogs led most of the game, giving up the lead in the fifth inning. It was the only time New York Mills trailed in the tournament. In their second game the Dogs shook off a tough first inning, giving up five runs, to come back and make a game of it, losing 5-4 with the tying run on third base. We as a school and community are very proud of the girl’s accomplishments and look forward to another great season in 2018.

Counselor NewsStudents in grade 9 – 12 at Carlton High

School develop their Personal Learning Plans each year to identify interests, apti-tudes, aspirations and personal learning styles and to set appropriate career and col-lege goals.

Working with the school counselor, students utilize the Minnesota Career Information System (https://portal.mncis.intocareers.org) to research oppor-tunities and plans for their future. Each student creates a portfolio to keep track of postsecondary institutions of interest, occu-pations of interest, assessments results, and scholarships.

The following Assessments are important to students as part of their graduation plan.

Sophomore Year Accuplacer – the college entrance

exam for the Minnesota State Colleges and University System (MNSCU) The results of this assessment qualify students for our

College in the Schools Program. This test is taken at Carlton High school in the Spring of Sophomore year and then again as a Junior.

Junior Year Armed Services Vocational Aptitude

Battery (ASVAB) - a multiple-aptitude assessment that measures developed abili-ties and helps predict future academic and occupational success. The results of this assessment are utilized in the Junior English College and Career Research Project. Students and parents may also share results with the military if they choose. This test is taken at Carlton High School in September.

the preliminary SAt, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a prepara-tory version of the SAT exam. You can only take the PSAT once per year, and most students take the test in 11th grade. If you earn a high score on the PSAT your junior year, you could qualify to receive a National Merit Scholarship. Carlton facilitates this test on the National test date Wednesday,

October 11, 2017. Students pay a fee to sit for this test.

the AC t or SAt test - Both ACt and SAt scores are used for college admissions and merit-based scholarships. Students take this assessment during their Junior Year. Some students take it at the end of Sophomore year for practice!! Websites for more information are www. act.org and https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org

College FairsMN National College Fair - Students

in grade 10-12 and their parents are invited on the Minnesota National College Fair Field trip in September. We take a coach bus to the Minneapolis Convention Center where students can gather information from colleges in the United States as well as International schools. There is a small fee for the transportation cost.

Local College Fairs – The Junior class visits the local college fair, typically at the College of St Scholastica to gather information on colleges for their Junior

Research project and Personal Learning Plan. The eighth grade class visits the col-lege and career fair at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in the spring to learn more about future careers and gather information for the start of their Personal Learning Plan in High School.
