Program Summary: This project is a new community library with main collection space, community meeting room, administrative area, branch manager’s office, outdoor reading area, playground and walking trail. Program Statement: The design concept for the library was to merge indoor and outdoor space under a large sloping roof with glass walls to provide shelter from the sun and weather. The wooded site offered the great opportunity to support the roof shelter with wood columns that branch out at the top to emulate tree tops. The views of the wooded setting are heightened by separating solid walls to create glass reading areas at the corners. The small stature of the building is enhanced by maximizing the open feel underneath the large floating roof structure. The building is environmentally sensitive with the use of native renewable materials and passive solar shading techniques. An outdoor covered reading area is created on the north side with full height glazing and west side protection from the harsh Louisiana sun. A playground is nested between the reading area and the forest. A nature walking trail begins and ends at the library encouraging exploration of the swampy forest.
