Glasgow Community Planning Partnership is committed to the promotion of Community Budgeting (also known as Participa-tory Budgeting). This is a process by which the public are en-couraged to participate in decision making.

Earlier this year organisations were invited to consider submit-ting a project proposal which would be of benefit to local com-munities.

Following a number of successful pilots, Glasgow City Council are pleased that the Scottish Government has made funds available to match fund a budget identified by each Area Part-nership. This will provide a total of £10,000 for each of Glas-gow's 21 Area Partnerships for local communities to bid into.

Each Area Partnership were invited to submit proposals from

community and voluntary organisations which:

Operate and provide services within local Ward boundary.

Agree to participate in the local Community Budgeting Event and present their proposal.

Meet the basic criteria for an Area Budget.

Could be completed by the end June 2016.

Speaking ahead of rollout Councillor Soryia Siddique, Executive Member for Citizens and Communities, said: “This is the first time the council has held such a large number of events across the city to enable local people to have a greater input into how services are developed and delivered in their area.”

“More than 100 local projects and groups from across Glasgow

will benefit from this money and this, in turn, will help thousands

of people, of all ages, improve their quality of life.”

Our editor was able to attend the ‘Calton Decides’ community

budgeting event which was held in the Bridgeton Community

Learning Campus on the evening of 28th April 2016.

proposals on secret ballots that were collected in by Community Planning Support Staff

who carried out the necessary calculations.

Councillor George Redmond & Mary McPherson; Calton Area Partnership then

announced that the following organisations were awarded grant support for their projects:

Similar public events were held in each of the 21 member

wards throughout Glasgow and an array of projects to the

benefit of Glasgow’s citizens were awarded grant support.

Our editor David Stewart has this to say about the initiative:

“I believe this is an approach that should be developed further - given the amount of time

invested into the whole process - I feel that the availability of funds should be increased

to take into account the time invested by organisations into developing applications and

pitches.”

“I call on Glasgow City Council to explore the expansion of further participatory platforms

for Glasgow’s citizens to prioritise the issue and needs most important to them; the City

Council could start by developing this further within the Community Planning Partnership;

I look forward to reading the evaluation report on this innovative initiative.”

TESCO PARKHEAD - ALWAYS HELPING OTHERS

Tesco Parkhead and Tesco

Shettleston teamed up to

provide lunch for St Mungo’s

Learning Community at their

recent celebration and sports

event at the Emirates Arena.

An attendance of almost 100

people required approxi-

mately 200 bottles of water,

200 pieces of fruit and a

mountain of sandwiches.

The collective might of Tesco

Parkhead and Tesco

Shettleston were up to the

task and managed to meet

the demand.

Susan said of the event; “It

was great to see the children

and young people’s achieve-

ment’s being celebrated at

this fantastic event.”

“It was a pleasure to support

this event; Thanks should

also be given to PEEK Pro-

ject & Active East for their

delivery of activities on the

day.”

In May Susan was able to at-

tend a visit to Tilliallan Police

Cadet College organised by

the Violence Reduction Unit

through Community in

Motion.

Susan had this to say about

the event; “The police cadets

were fabulous and looked

like they had as good a time

as ourselves with the

children.”

“The dogs were fantastic and

the mounted Police horses

showed off their wonderful

moves which was a fantastic

display of skill.”

PARTNERSHIP WORKS

The hard work and determination of Susan Wilson the

Community Colleague at Tesco Parkhead - in helping a

vast array of community projects - was recognised at the

Glasgow East section of the Community Champion

Awards where she won the Individual award.

Susan said of the award; “I am chuffed, this award will

motivate me to continue to do all I can to support the

vibrant and diverse communities of Glasgow East.”

“It was great to have the support of my boys and the

Wellhouse Allotments group at the awards ceremony and I

am looking forward to the city-wide event later in the year.”

The eight local authorities participating in Glasgow City Region City Deal are:

East Dunbartonshire Council East Renfrewshire Council Glasgow City Council Inverclyde Council North Lanarkshire Council Renfrewshire Council South Lanarkshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Council The Glasgow City Deal has meant the establishment of a new Centre for Busi-ness Incubation and Development in the Tontine Building, which is located in the Merchant City quarter of Glasgow. This space will be open to ambitious and growing small and medium enterprises from all economic sectors. Services provided at this centre will also be aligned to programmes being taken forward by Scottish Enterprise, therefore maximising the range of business support available to companies. This new facility will accommodate up to 50 businesses at any given time and will provide high quality flexible work spaces for companies that have between two and twenty staff. Glasgow City Council and the University of Strathclyde will provide additional business support services including: business mentoring; access to finance services; and back-office services such as ICT, Human Resources and legal/accounting services. Glasgow and Clyde Valley believes that this scheme, over a five year period, will support 125 firms and create 600 new jobs. 36. To take this scheme forward the UK Government will provide £1.67 million of capital funding in 2014/15 to Glasgow City Council, subject to final agreement of the scheme’s business case. This business case will also seek to en-sure that the business support provided is both coordinated and targeted and does not duplicate the work of Scottish Enterprise. UK Government funding will be matched by up to £2.42 million of local funding. The Tontine was opened in May 2016 by Glasgow City Council leader Frank McAveety and Renfrewshire Council leader Mark Macmillan. Mr McAveety has said: “The opening of the Tontine is a landmark for our economy. “What has been created is a business environment that will bring the type of jobs to de-liver a long-term and ongoing economic boost to the Glasgow city region.

“This City Deal supported project will provide a perfect space for entrepreneurs working in high-tech industries to grow their business. “We will see some of the brightest and most innovative young companies in Scotland based in The Tontine.”

SSF operates 3 2014 Legacy programmes; Active East, MEND and Education Through Cashback (ETC). The ambition is to ensure that the impact of the Games is sustained and, importantly, these programmes include improved outcomes for young people and communities. It's fitting therefore, that these are the first of our programmes and charity staff to move into the Legacy Hub in Dalmarnock with the rest of the teams moving in by July. Since the inception of Active East in 2012 there have been 106 Active Champions engaged who have given over 20,000 volunteer hours, 64 partner organisations involved which include local youth and sport as well as national and strategic to ensure opportuni-ties are maximised. To celebrate the move and to let the local community know who they are and what they do a fun community event is being planned for August 2016, details will be shared as this is confirmed.
